Re: How to Download OVI apps on computer?

I don't think there's a way currently.

Isn't the purpose of the apps to be installed in the phone?, why do you want them on the computer?

Isn't that a good option and a secure backup ? and what are people without dataplan and Wifi like me and the "topic starter" to do. ?? what's the use of the app installer then.? I have constantly posted here and Nokia for that feature, that's absolutely a must have feature !

I agree. The ability to download to any device is a MUST HAVE feature.

I hope Nokia fixes this SOON!

It makes sense that if it´s possible to ACCESS/BROWSE OVI store on a PC/laptop/whatever it seems OBVIOUS there shud be an option to :

1) download to PC/Laptop (missing ??!)

2) send to my phone - and incur operator charges (ok, fair enuff)

3) send to a friend (ok, might be useful for Nokia marketing)

where 1) is HIGH priority and 3) is LOW priority

  • Can I download content from Ovi Store to my PC then transfer it to my device?

You can only download content over the air on your Nokia device.

Most likely, Ovi Store only supports downloading directly to the phone, because Ovi Store has no real pirarcy prevention mechanisms (no license/activation keys, no copy protection/encryption, etc.).

P.S. The OMA DRM v1.0 forward-locking that Ovi Store supports for some content types (not all supported content types and not on all devices), is not a real piracy prevention mechanism.

However, if you're a real techie, you can extract the files once they're installed in your phone. Oh yeah, the freeware apps on Ovi are available on forum.dailymobile.se in downloadable to PC form.

Re: obile)Re: How to Download OVI apps on computer?

My first experience with the OVI store: a few days ago.

Result? Shocked that the only option was to download to phone.

It's as if Nokia think we all have cheap data plans and internet on phones is as common as water.

On top of that they ignore decades worth of PC networks. The personal computer is the centre of the digital universe, Nokia. Not some esoteric device nobody has or finds useful. There should absolutely be an option to download to PC. It's so obvious!

The only reasons I can think for Nokia to insist on phone-only downloads is:

    1) tracking you more effectively by identifying your phone and other personal data

    2) reducing support costs on their staff  (no more "how do I put this on my phone?" questions from those downloading to computer first)

It is truly bizarre the computer was ignored and not placed at the centre of their digital universe, but somehow this doesn't surprise me coming from Nokia.

If there is an easy way of extracting the setup file from already-installed applications, giving more details to those users stuck with this extremely restrictive problem would be very helpful.

    Hello ovkovi,

Downloading straight to phone also helps reduce piracy, which has been a big idea in the past.

Skype and Live Messenger are both free downloads. I can't (officially) download the .sis files to my PC, wich are connected to decades-old reliable (and relatively cheap and high-speed) networks.

Uhm, most phones now have wifi, and connecting to wifi is free. ^_^.

Thing is, no one is forcing you to use Ovi Store. There are lots of places you can get the same apps on the store. For example, the people at dailymobile have a lot of the apps from ovi store in file format downloadable to PC.

So, in other words, what you are saying is that the Manufacturer of the phone is giving us the least choice, and if we don't like it we should visit third parties?  :smileyhappy:

I thought the whole idea of the Ovi thing was to get all you are looking for under one roof.

Wi-fi is not free where I am from. Even if it were, how do I make a back-up of my download, so I don't have to download 1,000 times again in the future (and face the usual internet problems of having one version of your favourite app never to be seen again after something happens to your phone and things disappear...)

I prefer to download to PC. It's a shame that the phone's manufacturer is giving us less choice.

Re: How to Download OVI apps on computer?

No, I am not saying third parties, because in the first place, the apps in the Ovi Store are not made by Nokia. Offscreen for instance, who has a lot of apps on Ovi Store has their own website. In fact, in this case, Nokia is the third party in terms of you getting the apps. 98% of all apps I've seen on Ovi Store are not made by Nokia, and are made by companies who also have their own websites from which you can download the said apps.

Also, the download only to phone is likely do to licensing issues. Some of these applications are paid, or are meant to be free for Nokia phones only. But if they allow the download installer to PC, then someone owning a Samsung Omnia HD or SE Satio/Vivaz (both have same OS as 5800 and n97) can just download apps which are supposedly only for Nokia users. They lose their advantage in the app stores. Not to mention that these paid apps (which on some official sites you can only download once you pay), would be available for free to others since you have the installer.

When I said third parties, of course I meant third-party websites.

I am aware that Nokia don't make Skype or Live Messenger or most of the applications on offer on their Ovi site. The point being that the manufacturer of the phone should be making things easier for their users, not harder. ie. there should be more choice and one of those should be to download to computer.

Licensing? I don't know. When Skype is available for Symbian, it is available for Symbian, not "Skype for Nokia". So why should licensing mean anything here? What does Skype have to gain from restricting the download choices? They want people using the app.

Same with Live Messenger. These companies don't make their apps for one brand, they make it for Symbian. Live Messenger, same thing.

There are heaps of free Symbian applications that should be downloadable to PC from Nokia's Ovi site. It's a shame there aren't.

If Nokia have made some sort of exclusive agreement with some of these companies (because they don't seem to support it on their own sites), then that is simply limiting our choices.

Re: How to Download OVI apps on computer?

Did you even read closely what I said? Some apps on ovi store are paid, and therefore if downloading to PC is allowed, then these paid apps could be distributed without having the developer paid. Some of these apps dont have a license feature. For example, Sky Force Reloaded has two versions available on Ovi Store, the paid and demo. If you download the paid full version and get the installer, you could give it to anyone who asks for free, which is what is being avoided as the item does not ask for licenses, the demo just considers the paid version as an upgrade.

Furthermore, before Ovi Store, all the apps for the phones were available from these third party sites and there was no Ovi Store equivalent. Why should it make a difference now? Personally, Ovi store kind of sucks. A lot of very good apps for the phone aint available there. It just suddenly appeared last year because of the Apple App Store.

Seems to me that you never installed or acquired apps for your phones before Ovi Store was launched based on your complaints.

^   It may be possible to do so.

Installers of applications downloaded from ovi store are temporarily stored at "mass memory->installed files" with .dm extension. During installation they may be copied to another location, as after installation they are deleted. These files have license to be used any no of times but are non transferable.

So i think for personal backup purposes those files may be stored at some place to be used later for restoration purposes.

The .dm installer files may be acquired through PC via methods I dont think we are not allowed to discuss here actually. ^_^. As I already mentioned it on the 8th post of this thread.

Re: How to Download OVI apps on computer?

    ^ you are right.

But i have mentioned in my above post that those files show license status as usage: unlimited, copy:unlimited, but transfer to others is not allowed. So we are not authorised to send those files to others but we can store them for ourselves.  Even some of those files have .sis extension and are  without any limitations.

    chanchan05,

I think it's ridiculous that free apps you cannot download to PC and install from your PC to your phone. Free apps with no paid-for equivalent (so any licensing issues with the app is not an issue). Who cares if you can hand off a free copy of Live Messenger or Skype to your friend.

Luckily some smart companies still offer download of SIS files to the PC because they know that lots of people might want to download from PC to phone at work or wherever - without using their phone's expensive data charges. Lots do not, though. For Skype, I had to go to their developer site to be able to download the setup file to PC, for example.

If you think I am new to smartphones - YES I am - and I am hopefully expressing some of my frustrations here. The ability to not save FREE files to PC is incredibly frustrating and I can't see myself changing my opinion on this, regardless of any licensing talk (I would never buy an application tied to one phone).

    ansgp,

    thanks for your info!
