small concern

hi guys - firstly let me apologize if this topic is in the wrong section.. but i felt that this is

the most appropriate.. sorry if its a mistake.

what i ned to know is this - currently im living in sri lanka and is hoping to travel to canada in a few weeks

time for a short holiday. I was thinking of buying either a 5730 of a X6 from canada for my use in sri lanka.

obviously, i would be looking to buy an unlocked phone from over there.. but my concern is whether

there are any other thnigs I should look into - not just unlocked or not.

What i mean is - are there any other technical factors i should look into when buying from over there in order

for me to use it in Sri lanka?

many thanks

Re: small concern

3G connectivity. The networks in North America use a different frequency from the rest of the world, so likely as not, the phone will not work on your local 3G networks. Updates as well, NAM can have updates earlier or later than your actual region.

Re: small concern

many thanks for your reply.. so like you say.. 3G may not work (most likely case). so is there any particular detail that i must look for, for it towork in SL? what i mean is - is there any way that i can differentiale between then ones that are compatible and the ones that are not compatible?

Re: small concern

No there isnt. The hardware for the antenna in NAM versions are different. For example, Sri Lanka version uses X antenna, the NAM version uses Y antenna, because the frequencies are different. Bottom line is, dont buy a phone there.

Re: small concern

Yes, although they do get firmware updates late in your region. Actually the best place to buy would be Europe, just make sure that it is not branded, as they get their firmware first.

Re: small concern

hmm.. ok so european countries would be best? but the problem is that i would be going to canada like i told you in my previous posts..and buying from canada is not a good idea which you advised...

so since india would be ok then i may consider getting from india as an alternative..

btw.. just curious.. you said there were connectivity issues (3G) of incompatibility from phones over in areas like  america right? so wont that appliy to european countries like UK? i mean wont it be the same story in phones bought from UK?

Re: small concern

No, because the rest of the world, apart from North America, uses the same 3G frequencies. The Americans just wanted to be different.

Re: small concern

LOL thanks for all your info mate.. appreciate it very much..

so i might go with the idea of getting it from india then instead of canada.. since there would

be no compatible issues with using it in SL..

thanks again for your valuable info!
