Which provider are you using?
I know with google mail you have to set your g-mail account to forward emails to and from your device (imap forwarding)
Check your settings on your computer and make sure the imap forwarding is active.
Also, check the connection settings on your phone. as i know the N97 deines the outgoing ports incorrectly for Googlemail. It defines the port as 25 and should be 587, and also sets the security as SSL/TLS when it should be StartTLS.
Make sure all your phones connection settings are that recommended by your email provider.
Hope this helps.

i'm using hotmail.com
the settings on the phone are all done well, and everything is installed. I'm receiving all my mails just fine, but the sent ones just fail to reach their destination.

Like i said, My default port set by the phone was 25, should have been 587.
Check with your provider see what they advise.

windows live/msn/hotmail settings
* POP: pop3.live.com (port 995)
* SMTP: smtp.live.com (port 25)
o Note: make sure you check the box that indicates that your outgoing server requires authentication (in most mail clients this is not checked by default).
* Username: your full email address
* Password: your Windows Live ID password

'thank you but I don't know about ports'
This leave you with an interesting choice:
1. Get mail on your phone an learn a bit about ports
2. Learn nothing and never be able to send a single mail.
And yes - your provider should be able to give you the ports.
Say you were using Hotmail you would see:
- POP3 Server: pop3.live.com (port 995)
- SMTP Server: smtp.live.com (port 25) {Note: If port 25 has been blocked in your network or by your ISP, you can set SMTP port to 587 with TLS or SSL Encryption depending on the client in use}
Hope that helps

right si I checked again with my provider and I got the port (25) just right with all the other parameters. the problem actually origins from them, so I just have to wait.
thank you all for your help!
