I am with o2 and am due an upgrade, one of which I can choose from is the iphone. I would like to upgrade to this and then sell to then buy, or go towards, a N97. My package from o2 includes internet access (pretty well unlimited.)
My question is, should the N97 work OK with o2 as far as appliances such as GPS, internet etc. I am assuming as long as i have a data package it does not matter what the phone is. Any advice would be useful.
I am sure an expert or non expert on this forum will say this has been asked many times before but I have searched and not found the relevant answer. Thanks

ooooooorrrr... *ahem*
I don't believe O2 carries the N97 because they recognised the problems with the device..
Firmware v2.0 is due soon apparently so they may start carrying the phone then.. If you can, I'd wait until v2.0 rears its head and then have a fresh look. Hopefully there will be many more people singing praise at that point.. or at least fewer whingers (myself included)
If you can hold out until then, you won't have wasted time on the problematic pre-v2.0 firmware..
Maybe the N97mini might be worth a look when it pop out of espoo.. too..

Don't get the N97 just yet. Check out FW Ver 2.0 next month and by then N900 will be out have a go at both and then make up your mind.
On top of that you are watching out for the camera cover as it scratches the lense so I'd be looking out to see wheather it starts shipping with a different mechanisim and there's more check the forums.

I don't have an N97 (I have an N96) or an iPhone, so I may not be qualified to give advice, but I will give my opinion ![]()
I have been a long term fan of Nokia phones, but have to admit recently they appear to have released their best phones about 3 months before they are ready to go to the public. I still love my N96 (even though Vodafone are way way behind on Firmware updates).
I had a play with my cousins iPhone 3Gs a few weeks ago and I was impressed. It was so quick and responsive compared to Nokia's I have had. It was the first phone I had considered getting after I had seen the N96...... that was until I heard about the N900 ![]()
I really think that the N900 looks like an "iPhone killer" to quote a phrase. If it performs like the videos I have seen, it will, at the very least, equal the performance of the iPhone. Software backing will be an issue, but I really think there will be a massive influx of software for the Maemo OS, once the phone is out.
So, although I am not answering your direct question, I would wait for the N900 to be released before making up your mind. Although I was impressed with the iPhone, I have very high hopes for the Nokia N900 and think it will top all other Nokia's out there at the moment......

The MMS thing is a problem.. I've enjoyed ripping into iphone users "I'll send you an mmssaaaawww never mind"
but at the same time "How bout a video calllaaaawww never mind".. DAMNIT Nokia have produced a handset that has both those problems!
Implementing MMS should be trivial and really shouldnt' require more hardware. MMS relies on a whole bunch of WAP tech that everyone would like to ignore.. Infact, I wrote a WAP stack for my final year project at Uni so I know how mindblowingly tedious it is.. Anyhow.. they'll probably get around to it.. 3g video and voice calling might require a hardware change.. and certainly a license change
the codecs used in video calls cost money.. once you've bought the phone, its is, as always, very rare to see a new feature that costs Nokia anything more than time.. in this case they'd have to license the codec to make a video call.. I'm more sceptical about video calls.. but much less worried
what really worries me is "line-2" support!

I have to admit I do like the look of how the N900 is shaping up. However, just remember it's an 'Internet Tablet' first and 'Phone' second. Currently, it's lacking things like MMS. Not sure what else if anything, but that can easily be fixed by a firmware update. It took Apple nearly 2 years to get the iPhone capable of MMS.Message Edited by matt_t on 05-Sep-2009 09:33 PM

It won't support MMS, not SMS..
SMS short message service.. (plain old text)
MMS multimedia message service.. (photos, videos, images sound clips etc)

The N900 will be able to send Text Message, but not MMS (Multi Media Messages). So you can't attach pictures, animations and videos to a standard message. I don't use this functionality, so it is not an issue for me, but it is pretty much standard for a phone to send MMS at the moment...
