random rant

I’m a proud owner of a Nokia 5230, it’s not an iPhone, most of the time it a good thing, sometimes you can feel a certain lack finesse.  I know the 5230 is not a very powerful device and I know what I bought before I went to the store, it’s just the OS that keeps getting to me. I recently went review hunting to find the word I use to describe the series 60v5 OS; clunky.

Nothing seems built for the device or the touch devices. You can feel the duct tape holding together  the different parts that make up the device, to be honest, I sometime wish I bought an iPhone 3g, it costs about the same and I would have felt better. This feeling is not exclusive to the 5230, go review hunting and you will see what people think about the newest touch phone, the X6. A user explained how it had all the features that made a smartphone but none of them flowed in tandem. I recently used my uncle’s X6 and another reason why Nokia touch based phone are not tearing up the charts became obvious; it was a 5800 in a prettier dress i.e. capacitive touch. The email setup assistant kept re-opening the menu screen, tilt the phone and you don’t get slick menu transitions, you get the age of darkness, then light. It was a 5800/5230.

If you bought your 5230 thinking you could get iPhone-esc games, I laugh at you, HA! Developers actively push out touch games for Apple’s device, a simply port to Nokia touch devices would seem the logical thing to do as this would help persuade people to pick Nokia’s touch based phone; Damn you and you logical thinking. ‘Stumble’ over to Nokia’s game store and you only get support for devices with buttons. Nokia needs to get behind developers and make a case for Ovi store.

I don’t hate my phone, I love the contacts bar, music integration with the home screen works great and multi-tasking right off the bat without an OS update is beyond awesome.  That crazy thing we all call Bluetooth file exchange, sometimes it the little things we take for granted. Sometimes it feels like my computer, which is great.

Peace is not the natural state of things; if I had to make another complaint, it would have to be the signal, battery, and time/date bar! I have a really awesome picture of Dom from Gears of War; guess what’s where his face should be?  I had thought it would be similar to a Series 40 phone, man was I wrong. I can see just fine when I get simple, small icons on a Blackberry or iPhone or a Supernova phone but WA-BAAM! It has to be in your face doesn’t it?

I think Nokia should stop and take stock, work on the devices out now, support them, streamline the OS. They are just not there yet and that doesn’t come from bombarding the market with new phones, it comes from making your phones good enough so people can start recommending them to friends.

Re: random rant

There's something called Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 coming next year. They have been announced like two years ago, and they are the streamlined OS you seek. LOL.
