Dear Nokia,
I am an N97 user. Today you text me twice and emailed me about keeping my phone up to date. I quote "Make sure you download important updates for your N97 to keep it working to it's full potential." The email bangs on about automatically updating it too.
As a UK user, I've been checking for firmware updates daily to no avail, BECAUSE ITS NOT SHIPPED HERE YET! Please desist in kicking a man when he is down! I don't want to really add to the numbers of people already ranting about the delay in the UK release yet again, but maybe rethink your marketing strategy on when you talk to people about making sure their device is up to date when they are actually waiting for you to get an already in the wild release to their country.....
I understand that networks may hold back on releasing immediately, but I am unbranded as far as I can tell....
Regards,
Paul.
P.S. You might want to add the words "Nokia" and "N97" to your spellchecker.....lol.

SUMSONG or SE (or Samsung and Sony Erricson to people that can spell) are certainly NOT the market leaders.
Here is a link from All About Symbian quoting the leader board of mobile phone sales for Q2 of this year!
45% of ALL smartphones are Nokia smartphones!! Samsung is so small a player it's comes under "Other"!
Please, do some research before you go post shoddy statistics on forum!
True enough, Nokia do seem to send smartphones to market with some truly epic bugs, but, in time, they fix it.
Look at the N95... it was hyped so much but it was a horrid phone. But now, it's a little gem. After a few firmware
updates it was changed to something above and beyond the initial marketing chatter!
Same thing is happening with the N97!

JUST WANT TO TELL YOU ...
I LOVE YOUR COMMENTS
:d
GREAT COMMENTS...
I LOVE IT WHEN PEOPLE CREATE AND GIVE STATISTICS; EVEN WORSE THEY START BELIEVING IT ![]()
NOKIA WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST, NOT BECAUSE WE ARE SAYING SO BUT BECAUSE HISTORY AND STATISTICS SAY SO...
NO ONE CAN DENY THAT THE N97 DIDN'T START THE WAY IT SHOULD, BUT GUYS I CAN GUARANTEE THE NEW SOFTWARE WILL FIX OUR ISSUES...
AT LEAST NOKIA ADMITS IT DIDN'T DO TOO WELL WITH THIS PHONE AND THEY ARE WORKING ON IT...
CHEERS!!!

True enough about the N95 8GB: I've had no real probs with mine from day 1. Had a nightmare in the early days with my N80, but after the second firmware upgrade it worked fine, too.
The good news for all you N97 early adopters is that Nokia have announced (actually announced, with fanfare, something they've never down before) the October release of a major firmware upgrade for the N97 which not only fixes lots of bugs but also adds new features, including extending the things you can do with the touch interface ..
Your troubles could soon be over ![]()

I reckon the next couple of years will see a shift where smartphones will out sale ordinary mobile phones, the trends are changing so Nokia needs to up the ante in this range as sales figures are showing that Nokia smartphone sales was down in the second quarter of 2009 while our main competitors showed some growth.
Am amazed you r guaranteeing the new software will fix issues, don't you think the choice of hardware i.e. processor and RAM has a role to play in the phones poor performance?

What do you mean that mildly the N95-1 was not a fantastic handset?
I´ve had mine for 2.5 years, use it everyday as phone/gps/camera/mp3 player/radio/newsreader/email checker/sip phone etc. etc. etc. The only thing I could complain about is the battery life, but you sort of get used to carrying a charger around after a while so you stop noticing it.
Is it the lack of a lens cover, and thereby increased scratches on lens, that made the N95-8GB so great? Or the inbuilt 8GB memory (which I solved by buying a 8GB SDHC card....)
Nokia has done a great job in providing updates for the device. My only greavance is in the maps application, where I still prefer Maps 1.0 to Maps 2.0 or 3.0 (the latter ones are much more prone to call home to mom to ask for assistance in calculating routes).
Please enlight a N95-1 owner, who still to this day has not seen another device that better fits his needs.

I'm a N97 owner now !! I bought an invest my time and money on this flagship phone that FAIL to deliver most of the promise features!!
Where is my VOIP ? Where is is my Internet Radio? Where is my optional player?
If I wanted a phone with limited featurers I woudn't have gone with Nokia.
I'm in Germany and I got my phone like most of us tru NOKIA, unbranded and I'm still waiting for V12 or better yet for any version that WORKS and that has ALL, ALL promised features before it came out.
I love to read ALL the material of a product that I'm interested on buying and till today, NOKIA has let me DOWN !!
So, Please get your act together and give US what you promise and a better and reliable flagship phone that we can then recomment it to our friends.
I'll be happy and NOKIA will be happy.
I'm on the waiting line for any update in germany ![]()

I've seen a few people mention about these Messages. And if you check, the text/email isn't referring to Firmware updates for the phone. It's referring to Application Updates.
The one I had said about keeping your phone up to date by going to Menu -> Applications -> SW Update.
If you check that then yes. Normally there is an update available. Mine has OVI Contacts. Nokia Messaging and N-Gage. This is also where you will find any patches Nokia release before a Firmware update.
The last 2 patches were for the FOTA Settings and one to push installs towards the mass memory rather that the C: drive (maybe nokia could make it clearer by changing the name back to App Update rather that SW Update)
Firmware updates can be checked by going to Menu -> Settings -> Phone -> Phone Mgmt -> Device updates.
or the easier way *#0000# -> options -> Check for Updates

likewise I among the many UK customers with an unbranded handset waiting for version 12 to come out to fix bugs with the email client among other things. its a joke that nokia can release an update for a phone in some countries before others. what is also disappointing is that despite all the fanfare, hype and promise of a great range of applications and widgets for the handset these are still lacking, and those which are currently available are riddled with bugs and errors. if nokia wish to stay in the smartphone market they need to address the issues with the handsets much quicker than they do currently, or delay the release to ensure the phone is working as best it can, with the features promised. if it wasn't for being tied into a contract for the next 16 months i would have given up on the handset. this promised october update best be live up to its hype or i fear that many nokia users will go elsewhere for a smartphone
Hey there,
if you are using nokia messaging, make sure you have the latest version that now supports html. its actually very stable and works really really well, which i have never said about this bloody application ever before and i have been using it on and off......more off due to incredible bugs and just a mess, since it was released as a beta app. today i have kept it on my phone for the last two days and am using it all the time. this is very new for me as i have no tolerance for app that do not work. i simply dump them and move on to the next thing. so if you have not done so already i suggest you go to nokia messaging site and send yourself a text message. it is worth it for ONCE

Going back to the earlier comment about Nokia.
It is true that Nokia has the largest chunk of the smartphone market, but it is not because they have marketed and sold the most smartphones. This figure came about because Nokia ships most of its phones with Symbian OS; whether it is intended to be a smartphone or not, the people who gather those statistics count all of these phones as smartphones because of their inherent smartphone capabilities. Also Nokia has a reputation for releasing pretty solid devices. These figures do not reflect the US market however. Nokia is not a big player in the US, especially when it comes to smartphones. They are not marketed here and most carriers have no Nokia's in their subsidized lineup (few do). I am the owner of a Nokia 5800 (which was a sales success worldwide) and I have yet to see another 5800 anywhere in the states.
Nokia really need to watch how they release their products. Releasing flawed products then releasing update to fix them is not the way of a good future for Nokia or anyone making cell phones. It not economical or good customer service to do this. That is why Apple is more profitable, they release a phone with few problem and release periodic updates with new features and actual improvements; some of these improvement could have been the cause of problems if released in small update but they where well ironed out by the time the "major" update was released and customers were happy. I am definitely not an Apple fan, but the way they treat their customers is way better.
I have owned several Nokia's and have been happy with them but the 5800 I received with mixed emotions. Some of the issues I have gotten used to and some I chose to ignore. But when a new update comes out and a new bag of problems arise, I am back to square 1...not good Nokia.
We buy Nokias because they make great phones and they are great values. But they need to re-evaluate the way they handle software releases. It's better to show up the the party late with the right clothes on than to show up early in the wrong attire.
I have faith in Nokia...they will get it right. They have in the past.
