"Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

I have an N95 8Gb on the v20 (3uk) firmware.

Until recently the phone has been fairly reliable, however since mid-August I've suffered from relativelyfrequent (several times per day) "Insert SIM card" errors.

Now in August 2 things happened

a) My signal effectively become weaker - 3UK stopped roaming onto the O2 GSm network, which happened to be the strongest network at home/work, indeed now I frequently have no signal

b) I started using truphone (VoIP) on wifi at home/work to act as "fill-in" coverage

If I have decent signal (say in town) and not using wifi all is great...

Anyone else seeing this? I'm reckoning a firmware defect. Hopefully a) v30 will resolve b) 3uk will release v30 [soon]

Re: "Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

I've done some more checks, and
- The crashes occur regardless of whether truphone is being used
- Just inbuilt voip causes the same problems
- If voip is disabled, no problems with other data apps including on WLAN

So it looks to me as these are bugs in the N95 8Gb SIP stack.

I gather there's lots of fixes in the new firmware - just unfortunate 3Uk haven't shipped yet. I hope they do, but with the N96 just about released I wouldn't be surprised to see no/few further updates :-(

Re: "Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

There seem to be lots of bugs in the SIP software on the N95
I set up one SIP account at home first, no problems and easy to set up. Next I added a second account, for when I'm at work, but got an error message to say that I couldn't have two SIP account on the same Realm. Not sure why? My ISP at work is the same ISP as I use at home so the Realm needs to be the same for both. Eventually found that my ISP had a SIP2 realm aswell which mirrored the SIP realm. So I managed to get it working.

A few days later I needed to make a call at home from my work number so I switched the access point setting in the SIP configuration, now I can't get either account to work. Something got screwed up inside the phone. Tried a restore to factory settings and spent ages playing around with deleting and creating accounts. Occasionally I can get one or the other SIP accounts to work but never both.

I've also had "insert SIM card" errors since using SIP. I hadn't really associated the two, but it would appear that this is a likely cause.

I'm also on Three UK, so lets hope they get the problems fixed soon!

Re: "Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

Had an "insert sim card" today - voip auto-reg wasn't enabled nor was truphone.

Seems less common, but there's definately issues somewhere..

Any ideas if there is a file containing the SIP settings? Or are the settings hidden away somewhere in system only memory?

I don't know. However yesterday I found the forum nokia page

http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/d61bd0ec-1304-45dd-9283-63d631cb86b1/SIP_VoIP_Settin...

where's there's a utility to edit additional settings, along with some detailed docs.

You need to be signed up to forum nokia to get access I think.

And in the doc it says

With the SIP VoIP Settings application, it is also possible to save all the VoIP profile settings to an Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Client Provisioning (CP) document and import OMA CP VoIP settings to an S60 device from an XML file.

So I guess that's a yess then?

Re: "Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

Just to update this thread:

I put the latest firmware onto my N95-8GB, so it now has 30.0.0.18 on it.

I have received a couple of insert SIM card messages since the upgrade of the firmware, so the firmware doesn't fix that problem.

After the firmware upgrade I managed to get the SIP working ok with both SIP accounts (at work and at home) for a couple of days, then without making any changes one of the accounts failed to register again and after another hour or so of playing with the settings I still only have one working SIP account. Not sure why but my home account doesn't even attempt register (no padlock on the WLAN icon), the WLAN settings are ok though because I can open up the web browser and brows through the WLAN

INteresting, thanks for trying that. So does the "insert SIM" error only occur when you're using SIP or at other times.

I've spoken to 3 (CS) who
a) have no info about the v30 firmware, apart from warning I mustn't update to it (warranty)
b) have asked me to swap handsets/SIM (i have another 3 account) to see if that helps isolate the issue
c) Are likely to try replacing the SIM anyway, but warn that may leave me without service for a few days. They said something about SIMs > 2 years old. Maybe that's just their free replacement policy. Mine is quite old. Normal one is a Gemplus, old one is different.

Right now I still reckon it's a sw bug in the handset.

SO your problems - are they a regression since upgrading from v20 -> v30. If so that's not good...

For SIP config, there's some additional parms you can change using the "SIP VoIP settings" application from "forum nokia" (google search finds it)

I don't believe that SIP is effecting the "Insert SIM" error, but I cant be sure.

So far V30 has worked with 2 SIP profiles when I first set it up, then one profile stopped working and I've not been able to get it working again. This is just like what happened with V20, I managed to get 2 SIP profiles working then lost one of the profiles, then I lost the other, and no mater what I did I couldn't get SIP to work again.

I'm guessing the problem still exist in V30 and by upgrading from V20 to V30 I wiped the slate clean and started again.

I installed the 'SIP VoIP settings' tool, but even though I already have two SIP profiles set up on my phone the 'SIP VoIP settings' tool does not appear to list them anywhere???

On the SIM issue I noticed that the clip holding the SIM card in the phone causes it to bow the SIM slightly by applying more pressure along the edges on the SIM than in the middle of the SIM. Wondering if this is causing problems I have stuck a small piece of thin card to the battery to apply even pressure to the back of the SIM card retaining clip.

Re: "Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

Just been having another play with the 'SIP VoIP settings' tool.

It appears that the tool only configures the VoIP profiles which it has created, not the the ones created with the 'Internet tel.' under settings/connecton. It does allow you to create a new VoIP profile by copying an existing profile though.

The 'SIP VoIP settings' tool does not allow you to change the SIP profiles either.

My problem appears to be with the SIP profile though (not with the VoIP settings), as normally (when first installed) the SIP profile will register without a VoIP configuration being present. At the moment though I can't get my SIP profiles to register. And as predicted after 5 days both my Work SIP profile and my Home SIP profile have stopped working, and I've not made any changes.

I just thought I would post back to this thread to say that I have not had any "Insert SIM card" messages since implementing this. I was getting the message once or twice a day, so I am hopeful that I have fixed the problem.

ETA: I would post pictures of the fix, but I don't think I can post pictures in this forum?

Re: "Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

Hi,
I tried this, but in my case it didn't help.

However my operator sent a replacement card just about a week ago, and no re-occurances since.

Re: "Insert SIM card" (or reboot) - N95 8Gb

I contacted 3UK with this problem. They said it was a known problem with the N95 8BG, adding that if my SIM card number began 'AX' then I needed a replacement SIM (which in my case they are sending me). Whereas if the number began 'GU' then a software update was needed and suggested I arrange to take it to a 3 shop.
