Isn't it wonderful? Another bug, another weird handling by Nokia.
Had stumbled on the same problem. After I did a reset, I guess I was back at Maps 2.0, which refused to run, and said I should install a new version from nokia.com/maps
However, there is no new version there to find and install on the N97. And program update have magically dropped any knowledge of Nokia Maps, even though I *know* I upgraded to 3.01 there a few weeks ago. It's not even in the history log in the program updates application on the phone.
Luckily I had a friend who had the map install application running on his PC, which managed to install maps 3.0 on my N97 again, so I was happy.
But this sounds exactly like another problem I had about two weeks ago. At that time it was the Software Update for PC which Nokia screwed up. When I started it, it said that a new version was available, and I should install the upgrade. I did so, and the upgrade was installed. Software Update then restarted, and said that there was a new version, and I should upgrade, only now it was saying I should upgrade to the version I had just already installed. I choose upgrade anyway, and it did a "repair", after which it restarted, and once more said that there was an upgrade available, and I should update (once more, the same version that I was alreday running). This time I declined to do the upgrade. Software Update then just terminated.
So basically, I couldn't run Software Update on my PC at all. I contacted Nokia about it, and they said that there had been some foul up, and they were aware of the problem, and working on it, but had no real solution at that time.
Let me guess... Nokia have terminated all consultants, and the people left at Nokia are employees who are rather junior, and really aren't capable of doing software development the way it should be done. A typical move so save money that will end up costing Nokia a lot more than they saved, in the long run...
You really don't release software without doing some proper testing, which they obviously haven't done, neither on the phone, nor on the PC software.
(The Software Update problem was solved a few days later, but I still have my answers from Nokia about the problem. Keeping them just to remember how much they are bothing things up.)

Just recently got my E72 a couple of weeks back with preinstall (updated) ovi maps. I downloaded my region maps from the website and installed them in my phone; but the problem is.....I keep getting charged for every single minute.
A few other friends with the same phone aren't facing any problems what so ever. I've turned all internet connections to offline and have selected 'WAP services' for network destinations.
Any ways around this trap????

In the maps menu, select the 'Spanner' icon. Internet - 'Offline' must be selected. Also in the phone's main menu if you have 'Location'-- select Positioning-->Positioning method-->Integrated GPS (all other options disabled)
