n96 is driving me crazy!

I have a 3 month old nokia n96. Besides the usual complaints of freezing up constantly and the worst battery range I have ever seen, my biggest problem with this lemon is that every time I am in standby mode and sometimes while on other screens, the "last device used' and the "select connection" screens constantly pop up. It does this all the time and it is very annoying. I've been through the menu shutting off this and that trying to stop this and nothing works. It gets to the point where I'm already on line and it keeps asking me what connection I want to use go on line.  Anybody have any ideas, i'm all ears.     Rick

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

This is my advise,

Hard format the phone, format memory card..

Re load new firmware. Now v20.050.

But remember to backup your data using PC suite.

If still cannot, then time for service center.

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

Hi, I sympathise, in a similar position myself with Vodafone.

I believe the default code is 12345.

I'm on my 3rd N96 now - in addition to the poor Firmware, I  think that the build quality is a bit iffy. The current one is the best of my three.

Cheers,

Mike

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

Not to be too negative but why, why in the world would you buy 3 of these pieces of **bleep**? After the 2nd one at least, I would think you would have learned your lesson. lol   As I write this my phone is next to me and is turning the search for blue tooth devices on all by itself. My battery lasts about an hour because it constantly does this all day long. Its never on the standby screen when I light the screen up. I kick myself in the **bleep** for not buying an i phone.   Rick

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

You were right! Not only did a hard reset get rid of that annoying habit of constant blue tooth and internet pop ups, but my battery is way better, and I don't mean a little better,  3x longer at least, maybe more. Thank you! I was ready to toss this brick for an I-phone but now I love it again.    One question though.. Why is it that the hard reset didn't wipe the phone to factory specs? I wanted to start completely from scratch but the only thing that was missing were my contacts. All my apps and music ect, were still there. Rick

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

because the N96 (and all Series60 3rd edition Feature Pack 2) devices, plus also N82 (running FP1), have User Data Preservation. besides, you may have installed all your applications on the memory card as well as with the music.

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

Since upgrading to V20.050 I have started to have battery problems - I wonder if its related to the new battery management software.

Over the last 2 weeks the handset has steadily got worse at charging.  To start with it stopped charging in my car - saying "Not charging" when I connected it.  Then a week ago it stopped charging from my mains charger.  I've been charging the battery with an old N95 and switching the battery.  I've tried 2 different batteries and also done a general reset of the phone but still will not charge.  The sympton with the mains charger is that its animates the battery levels when charging but its not charging... it just runs down.  The only way I can charge the battery is to put it in an N95.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

general reset is not enough, you're going to have to perform a three-finger hard reset. remember to backup all important data first tro your memory card and as a .nbu file using Nokia PC Suite.

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

I'd would have loved that to have solved all my problems, but I've done the 4 fingers hard reset and its still not charging.  The bars animate but the battery is just running down.  Is there any way of going back to the earlier software version?

Re: n96 is driving me crazy!

sorry to hear that it is still not working. if you have tried the hard reset and it is still not working, then all you can do is take your phone to your local Nokia Care Centre for them to take a look at it, and possibly give you a replacement if your phone is still under warranty (i'm sure this is where the place you bought your phone from will do this on behalf of Nokia). there is no way to roll back to an earlier version of firmware on your phone. doing so even at Nokia Care, well most likely result in bricking your phone.

remember to throw some kudos our way please, it would mean a lot to us :smileyhappy:
