Is there a loose connection between the slider and the part of the phone with the buttons? This could also be a bug (mine sometimes leaves the lights ON), but just to be sure...

Try this:

1. put the phone on a table on its back

2. open the slider

3. hold the phone on the table with you other hand

4. gently press down the slider part from the upper corners

5. also try lifting the slider gently from different places

If the lights blink, go off, or otherwise act erratically, you have a loose connection. I had this once with a N86 i had just gotten from service - I had to take it back.

Bear in mind that the keypad will not illuminate if the phone detects that the surroundings are bright enough for you to see the writing. It should always illuminate in the dark though.
