Re: n70 farce!

Although when ringing Club Nokia Care Line you the customer is given information regarding to future or new Software Versions before CNSP's do. The reason for this is that the software bugs that the Care Line are reporting back to the Nokia software developers directly affect the new softwares.

When the softwares are tested they are made for the Generic handset and not for derivatives, these non-generic software versions have to go to the respective networks before they are released to the CNSP's. In most cases this is a lengthy process so that the current version is in front of the non-generic ones.

So in fact it is not the fault of Nokia but the network to which your unit was originally supplied on that are dragging their heels on authorising Nokia to let CNSP's to use the latest software on their badged handsets.

When you flash a phone to a different version whether it be generic or not you run the risk of there being a "Flash Failure". This basically kills the phone and only a Competance Centre can revive the unit as low level CNSP's are not given the capability to do this.

Hi everyone, this is the 1st email i received off nokia when my phone failed the upgrade and was sent to them to be fixed, promising me id get my phone back with GENERIC software......

thank you for contacting Nokia Helpline.

With regards to your email concerning upgrades
Nokia will upgrade your N70with the generic 3 software

If you should have further questions or suggestions please feel free to contact
us anytime.

I had a phone call from vanguard today, good news is phone's back. bad news, STILL got OLD software on it. iv asked vanguard to flash it with generic AGAIN and been warned it could kill the phone again but theyre willing to try. If it dies again im takin it straight back to the vodafone shop (as advised by Trading standards) to get a NEW phone under the 'sale of goods act 1979' and ill keep gettin the phones flashed and getting a new one when it breaks until im successful!

nokia were worse than useless when i emailed them. basically they dont want to know. read their reply below.

Thank you for contacting the Club Nokia Careline.

With regard to your email concerning the Nokia N70 handset, when a handset is
not repairable it will be replaced with a refurbished handset. This is part of
the 2 year warranty issued by Nokia. The warranty in full can be found on the
following web page:
http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,77086,00.html

For the cases when the handset is so new we usually refer the customer back to
the phone supplier who will have a return period for the purchase e.g. 28 days.
If the supplier is unwilling to do this it would have to be repaired or replaced
at a Nokia service point.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but that specifically says 3 in that message, correct?
I read that as 'We'll send you the generic firmware for the 3 brand', not we'll send you the generic firmware.

Re: n70 farce!

I know that may LOOK like that but thats just the reply they sent. Using the term GENERIC shows they actually meant NOKIA v3.5
I told them what had happened and that the phone was a vodafone handset and could they confirm that i would actually GET the generic v3.5 software flashed on my phone while it was being fixed by them as it would be pointless sending my phone back to me with the same faulty software.
As iv said, theyve just sent it back with SAME software on it. Useless to me! Im back where i started nearly four weeks ago. I just hope it accepts the flash tommorrow coz iv had enough.

I rang vodafone yesterday to be told theyd cured the mms problem. all you do is put the phone on GSM mode and it'll send them no problem. unfortunately, as i informed the advisor, the phone has to re-boot to go into 3G mode, so that means my 3g phone is useless and cant be USED for 3g video calling or vodafone live 3g unless i continually change the settings on my phone and switch it on and off. he said while in gsm mode, it would automatically switch over to 3g if i made a video call. id like to know HOW, when it has to turn off to do this?! iv been told another pile of manure. At least vodafone have written off my bill for this month because of all the trouble iv had! good job too, as a lot of the calls iv made, were chasing after answers about my phone!

i dont see that as particularly pointless, nokia have stated what you should expect under the warranty. here they tell you that if your phone cannot be repaired under warranty they will replace it with a refurbished one. they even go as far as give you the advice "take it back to the reatiler if its 4 weeks old or less" to get it exchanged. I am not sure i see the problem with that.

I also think gadgets post on the firmwares was rather good, if it wasnt for the tinkering that vodafone have done to your phone then you wouldnt be in this situation. for instance, have a look at the threads concerning the n70 on orange.

right now its more like you have an issue with vodafone than you do with your n70, or 'vangaurd' who repaired it, serioulsy there is no need to bust a gut over this - its just a phone. doubtless the situation will get resolved, its just in your case its fallen down a bit. there is another thread praising nokia's repair center for the quick turn around in getting their phones fixed asap.

Re: n70 farce!

i agree with seraphim, you seem to be falling foul of operator software on your phone. do you know who vangaurd are sending the phone off to? they could be sending it to completely anyone.

it seems very odd that users who have sent their phone to Nokias uk repair center have had the phone back with the correct software in a few days, but you seem to be the only one who is having problems.

Hi everyone, vanguard successfully flashed my phone with generic software. it now sends 100kb mms', video calling works fine, 3g works as well as ever and vodafone have knocked off last months bill (£70) for all the hassle iv had!

Id just like to give a BIG thank you to vanguard for all their help thru this, its not their fault the phone wouldnt accept the software flash, its a combination of vodafone and nokia.

Vanguard did exactly what i asked for and kept me upto date with any developments. So thanks to Phil and Andy!

Vodafone say they have a software developer IN nokia who develops and puts the sofware on, Nokia say its vodafone. Which it is i dont know (or care any more!)

If i ever get another nokia phone and software causes these problems, ill get generic software flashed on, and if it fails, it'll go straight back to vodafone and forget nokia fixing it! Club nokia informed me all phones that are returned to them go to a CRC (Central Repair Centre). Its the CRC i spoke to who informed me they arent authorised to put generic software on a phone UNLESS it already had it on. Id like to know why SOME phones are coming back from the CRC (on vodafone) with generic, and others NOT?!

Service providers should stop messing around with the software and leave the generic software alone. Nokia should take a look into this because its dragging down their name!

Im only happy now because of a third party.... Vanguard communications, Rhyl, North Wales. Theyve helped me before and theyve done it again, Thank you!

ps, in reply to seraphim, the information nokia gave me was useless because if id have returned my n70 to vodafone, theyd have replaced it with exactly the same software version i was trying to get rid of. i was trying to find out HOW i could get the RIGHT software on and WHY the told me THEY put it on, then DIDNT. Seems someone doesnt know what theyre doing. I think itd annoy anyone, if it was your phone and youd had this ammount of hassle

its strange that other people did not have this trouble with CRC, maybe they just singled you out for this treatment?
