this has been happening to me too... very random, the phone is just off sometimes when i retrieve it from my pocket. sometimes, after this has happened i can't switch it back on either - and i have to remove the battery and replace to 'restart' it. it seems kinda like a system crash to me, or a screen hang.
i'm currently experiementing with disabling the auto-keylock function, as it occured to me that the fault seemed to correspond with the autolock activation. so far so good, just gotta remember to manually lock it before i put it away but it seems to be holding out so far. i'll report back in a few days.

Heard of this problem before.
To fix it try wedging a small piece of paper along the edge of the battery to underneath. (Obviously not infront of the gold connectors.) Should make the battery fit tighter.
Basically the battery might be slightly loose so the odd slight movement causes it.

well i stlll think it's caused by the screenlock function - i've had no more trouble since i disabled that feature. a loose-fitting battery wouldn't really explain the symptoms either...
well, if it happens again i'll try your battery trick and let ya know

i can deal with this minor issue, and i think it's sorted now. as for firmware, there is a factor i have a problem with!
i originally bought the 5800xm in red, but there was a hardware fault with it which meant the date and time needed to be re-input everytime the phone was switched off. nokia sent me a blue model as a replacement.
i had updated the firmware on the red to v11.0xxx but the blue has firmware v10.0xxx. i am unable to update the firmware for the blue as Nokia Update and OTA both say i have the newest firmware available. now, we all know there is a v20.0xxx
it seems that the country you're in, the version handset you have, and your network operator are all factors when it comes to available firmware updates. so meanwhile, everyone else gets lots of new features and bug fixes and my uk nokia 5800xm blue on vodafone has to make do with the oldest frickin versioin 10.0xxx!!!
sort it out nokia/vodafone - we need firmware updates too, you MOFOs

O.K... Same problem, it turns off... However I used the paper... works sometimes...
Version 11.0.009
If there is a newer version where do i get it
There was something about the screenlock function causing it... If so, how do you turn it off!
Help appreciated

Hi, sorry for the delay...
Menu>Settings>Phone>(all the way at the bottime) Phone Management> Auto Keyguard
Hope that helps you...
I used the thick paper from a cigarette pack, just the top hinge side, you're only trying to prop the actual terminals

i posted a blog about it...

Thanks!!! I was experiencing the same problem. Sometimes the phone just turned off in my pocket and sometimes, while I was playing around with lightsabre, when I try to "hit" something it turned off, too. So, I tried with the piece of paper and It worked just fine!!! In my case I attached two pieces, one near the golden connectors an the other on the base of the battery.
Now I can play as long as I want and hit everything with my lightsabre!!! Thank you!!!

same thing. It randomly turns off. The real problem is I have no idea if it is off or on since the screen is always completley black when its keylocked.
Going to try paper trick. Hope it works

i had tried ur solution..and it totally works!!! it had inserted a small piece of paper(a bank receipt from ATM machine..) and bend it,then inserted it under my battery, near the pin connectors.then i tried to put in my jeans pocket, and take it out back for 10 minutes after take a walk and moving.its still working!!30 mins later, its still working!!..normally my 5800 turns off when it's inserted in my pocket for 5 mins!!! but now,,my phone is totally not a big matter for me now,,as the solution is totally a success!!

having the same problem....for the past few days. my frmware is v51- but it has been so for past 2 months. so its not a software problem. hard reset also didnt work....
will try out the battery trick n see...else will have to take it to nokia care.
but why shud there be such a loose contact in such a model!! really baffles me!! my phone is just 5 months old- still in very good condition.
such things are expected from very cheap models of little known brands.
