It actually fell off? Ouch. I know they do feel a little wobbly and loose but I've not heard of one falling off before.
A repair will not be too expensive I'd have thought. I have read on here though of people asking if all the unlock buttons feel loose and I think judging by the response and the 2x N97's I've held they do. If this is the case I can understand why you begrudge paying for a repair like this.

i'm so glad to see that this is more common than i thought my slide key broke after having the phone for 6 weeks and i was so carefull with it, i took it back to the 3 store where i'd purchased it from where they basically laughed and said this was my own fault and that i would be charged for the repair. i then took the phone to carphone warehouse who couldnt have been more helpfull they are repairing it free of charge, has been in shop couple of weeks tho hoping its back soon good phone just badly designed.

The best solution to this i found was to download Nunlock, giving you the choice to unlock the handset with a finger swipe across the screen like the iphone does. This leaves the slider untouched so will have to fear of damage. After i read that a few people were having problems with the slider i didnt want it to happen to me either.

My N97 has the same situation. I even can not find where is the unlock button.
Feel not good about the experience. This is the first time with most expensive price cellphone I used.
But the quality like this, I believe it is kind of design or common problem.
Wish Nokia can face it or recall for fast repair.
My strong faith to N97 is melting.
Still canna accept it.
Anyone knows how to repair it ASAP on repair shop or anyplace.
Best regards,

bought a N97 through 3 and eagerly awaited its arrival on waiting for my baby to arrive i purchased a leather hard case a plastic case for the front and as soon as it arrived placed them on , i look after my phone and love it, i have the latest firmware and lots of OVi stuff on also,I adore this phone but am now devastated the slider lock/unlock key fell off whilst i was attending a christening today and now the phone is all but useless ok i can fiddle to play with it with the screen slid out but that isnt practical to me nor should i have to do thisand i phoned 3 and they said tough it is your fault so u need to pay for its repair hell the phone is a month old and was looked after like a new baby i have not abused this phone and refuse to be held to ransome by three why should i pay, it was clearly a problem waiting to happen and would like your advice on this matter
looked at the bottom of the button, and it looks like it was held in place with glue or something. This was a brand new phone straight from the vodafone shop. I was so poised off...YOU ARE NOT ALONE COMRADE! ![]()

The same thing happened to me - I unlocked my phone one day (under normal use), and the lock key fell off in my hand. I went to a registered Nokia Care Point (Carphone Warehouse in Coventry) and they told me £83 - it annoys me that some of you have been to Carphone Warehouses and got the fix for free. I'm gonna try another Care Point that isn't a Carphone Warehouse and see if they do it for free. The guys at the CW gave me the number for the N97 Support line (which shows you how **** the phone is) where you can release all your troubles about the gawd darn phone.

Oh dear.
I gather this runs on normal garantee. Consult your local Nokia pusher
