As I have learned the hard way...
Next time dont buy a Nokia Symbian device. Maybe MAEMO is better, but im done throwing my money into a burning pit. Horrible software, horrible customer service, and certainly not worth it in the end.

Fortunately there is a combo key Hard Reset for the Nokia N97. I just did it and it worked for me.
The traditional method won’t work as the N97 doesn’t have the old keypad. After you’ve backed up your data onto memory card/pc/ovi, turn your phone off and simultaneously press these four buttons.
You’ll know it’s worked when you see the initial set up screen, asking country of origin.
Keep doing untill you see the initial setup screen - make sure you press all buttons as described.

Shift + Space bar + Backspace + Power your phone
make sure you hold the keys carefully together for a few seconds,
I did not do any hard resets arfter firmware updates it seams to be running better, see how long before it bricks again.
Nokia should add a boot loading symbol to start so we know to wait

I want to make question regard step 2 ( Take out SIM card ) in bbianchi procedure.
I saw some hard-reset instructions ( I missed this good one ) and they all pointed to have the SIM card IN, so I did it.
Everything went ok, except I was not able to connect with the 3G provider anymore.
I double-checked the SIM card on the 3G laptop modem and the same thing: Connection was blocked by the 3G provider.
So I went sleep prepared to call 3G provider next day to ask what is going on, but to my surprise, everything was working ok on the next day ( in both the PC and in the phone ).
So, I was considering the correct instructions should be to take the SIM card OUT ... and than I saw this post that mention the reason to do that is only if you dont have to deal with the network err when resetting.
Is that possible that these "network err" somehow react with some 3G-provider to block the connection for a while ?
Thank you
Marcio

By pressing the Shift key + Space bar + Backspace key will do the trick! Before doing this, create back-up using PC Suite. This is formatting is applicable also to the N97 mini.![]()

-#7xxx# does only a reset to the factory settings. It isn't a complete hard reset off the phone.

Turn off the Phone completely. Press and hold down "arrow up", "space bar", "arrow back" and then power botton all at at once. Then you will see Nokia and after that the country of your chose should come up. When all is well you just master reset your N97.

I just browsed through my n97 files and folders. And man, is there A LOT of excess files. I mean i'm about to sell my phone and wanted to make sure there isn't anything extra left behind.
Hard reset, Restore original settings and so forth DO NOT erase all of your personal data!
After the above mentioned procedures, i still had to manually delete afair my music and playlists, active notes, some photos that had been synced to ovi, my Skype details (even though skype was uninstalled before), my Opera Link data etc. etc.
So to be sure, be sure to delete the files you want to get rid of...
and some of the left over files were unable to delete with regular file browser...

I want to hard format my N97 but my 'backspace key' is not working!! Is thr any other way to hard format???
I also tried using *#7370# and *#7780# codes for formatting but it doesn’t work instead it gives following msg "End All Active Calls And connections First" even though no connections/calls are running
