email retrieval from IMAP trouble

Hi. For some reason my 5800 phone has recently stopped retrieving emails from my IMAP inbox. No changes on the servet but I have recently installed the latest firmware 50.2.005 and all applications are up to date.

The problem is I go to inbox click on Connect and it says updating mailbox, sometimes it will download the new messages and sometimes I have to do it several times. Also the connection to the mailbox is immediately droppped. There is no "exiting will disconnect from mailbox" prompt when I exit so that shows that it is not connected. Then when I try to open a new or even an old message it connects and says updating mailbox and then sometimes the email application closes, sometimes it does not do anything and goes back to message list, sometimes it will show the message with no body and sometimes it shows an error saying could not display message. After trying several times sometimes I get to see the message content. Each time I try to open the email it attempts to connect to internet as it asks me which connection to use so it is evident the phone cannot maintain the connection open.

I have noted that after some firmware upgrade now I only have the option to download headers. Before I believe there was an option to download part of the body aswell.

when trying to delete a message from phone & server it tries to do it but finally just shows a red slash on the message icon. The message is not deleted from server either.

I tried selecting messages from memory card and phone memory and tried deleting the email account and setup  from scratch but it is the same everytime.

I am using the default email client. The new Nokia email program is useless because it does not support secure connections which i need to use.

I don't understand what do you mean? "its same everywhere". Better reconfigure it one more time by deleting the mailbox.

No, it wasn't there,  you can only retrieve Headers.

Probably the connection to the IMAP server would have dropped, the next time you connect it will be updated.

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble

I have already configured it multiple times by deleting the entire mailbox and creating a new one and the problem persists.

I have configured it with a gmail account and it has the exact same problem it has with my work email server.

About the downloading of the headers I guess I did not notice that only the header was downloaded because the connection was kept open after downloading them so that when I clicked to see the body it did not try to connect again and just showed the message. Now it disconnects immediately after headers and for each message that I want to see it tries to make a new connection and mailbox update. Plus most of the time the body is not downloaded and I see an empty email with no subject or text. Trying multiple times with the same email sometimes works.

About deleting, I connect to update mailbox many times and the message is still there with a red slash.

I agree that the phone cannot sustain a connection to the IMAP server and this could be the root of all these troubles.

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble

I wanted to add that many times while updating the mailbox the email program crashes and is completely closed and it is necessary to open it again. This had been ocurring for a long time, before the real trouble started as described above.

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble

Is the Messaging app using memory card for storing messages and e-mail? change it the preferred location to phone memory and try.

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble

I managed to fix the problem by removing a couple of programs. I removed the new Nokia Email and the Flash Lite. I am not sure which one did the trick but I am betting on the Email causing some conflict with the original Nokia Messaging program. It is working nicely again now.

So it appears the new Nokia Email program not only is inferior to the old Messaging program because it does not support secure connections but it also causes conflicts.

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble NOT SOLVED

The phone is working badlyy again as before with no changes from my part. It worked fine all morning for some reason after a week of not working, but now back to broken.

I have already tried using the phone memory and the external memory and deleting and setting up the mailbox from scratch.

this has been working for a few days then not working for a few days on and off. I haven't been able to figure out what makes it tick.

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble NOT SOLVED

Hi penachus,

I have exactly the same problem. I have N97 mini, latest firmware. Using Gmail IMAP, it worked for years but in the last weeks it just doesn't update my Inbox. Same symptoms, I get "Connecting to mailboc 'gmail.com'" then "updating inbox" for a fraction of a second, then the connection is lost, no error messages, no emails updated.

As you did, I removed the mailbox completely, and configured it again. Result: all emails updated, but: subsequent retrievals failed, so again: emails are not updated.

Did you find a solution? Can you post it here?

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble NOT SOLVED

Hi everybody,

after 3 hours spent to fix the same problem, I found a solution. The sync stop to work if in your inbox there are a lot of email that contains big attach (> 1mb). Try to delere these emails and sync again; in my case it works perfectly.

Regards

Re: email retrieval from IMAP trouble NOT SOLVED

I have a nokia Xpressmusic 5800 and I have the same problem on an IMAP

server which support the IDLE command.

Particularly  I have traced the network traffic I have discovered that the nokia

client receive the IDLE notification from server (when arrive a new mail) but

nokia reply with an "UID FETCH  start:end" command in which the "end"

arrive only at the value of the last received msg (not the new one).

So the nokia client could never retrieve the new arrived mail ...  :smileysad:(

Clearly a software bug
