Worldwide Warranty

Hi everyone!
I was very dissappointed to know that a nokia phone bought in a country can be serviced (repaired) only in the country. Isn't it strange? Many people like Nokia because they believe that they can enjoy nokia's worldwide warranty. I bought nokia n80 in Hong Kong and currently live in Japan. I asked Nokia Japan if they can repair my phone. The reply was surprisingly negative. They suggeet that I send my phone to Hong Kong. I also asked Nokia Hong Kong. The reply was surprisingly cold; they suggest that I ask someone in Hong Kong to bring my phone directly to their office, and that the someone needs to bring the phone back to Tokyo if I can't personally visit the office in Hong Kong. Finally, I asked Nokia USA and got dissappointed again.

I believed that Nokia was a truly global company who produces and sells phones for people who work both in their countries and overseas. I strongly suggest that Nokia become truly a global company. Even most of the top-brand laptop computers are sold with international warranty. Phones are much more smaller and therefore easier to take overseas with.

Re: Worldwide Warranty

I think you'll find it's the same with all the mobile phone manufacturuers. It can only be fixed in the country you bought it from.
The reason why is to stop retailers from selling grey imports which are cheaper to obtain than 'home made' handsets. Grey imports are much harder / more expensive to get serviced should anything go wrong.

Re: Worldwide Warranty

Dear phonemonkey,

Thank you for your note. Glad to know the reason why Nokia and other mobile phone companies are not willing to provide international warranty.

Then my concern goes not only for Nokia but also for other companies. It is important to protect retailers in every country. I understand that. They are important customers for the producers. But it is equally an important fact that end users are also customers. Part of the money we spend for the pnones goes to the producers. Then the producers should be more considerate about the end users' needs.

I wonder what the top of the phone companies are thinking of. For instance, Nokia is the #1 cell phone company that sells unlocked smart phones so that we can use it everywhere on the globe. It is natural that the end users believe that the repair should be carried out anywhere. I believe this is one of the end users' important needs who have smart phones to use both inside and outside their countries. I hope my voice will reach the top of Nokia and wish that Nokia will be the first company in the world that provides international warranty to meet the end users' needs.

From a fan of Nokia in Japan

Re: Worldwide Warranty

Best of luck with that mate although I wouldn't say it's totally Nokia's fault. The other problem is the much bigger picture of taxation.
If Nokia were to supply worldwide warranty then all phone retailers could purchase phones from overseas. Needless to say this would not go down well with their local governments who would be missing out on all that lovely tax money.

Re: Worldwide Warranty

Oh well! Can't find any reason to believe that you are wrong.

Positively interpreting the situation, I think there exists boundary conditions that do not allow the communication industry to be more responsive to endusers'needs.

At the same time, I wonder how IBM, Toshiba, HP, etc has successfully crossed the barrier so that they can provide international warranty for endusers of their notebook computers. Perhaps they had or have had organizational leaders who have stronger drive for meeting their customer needs, firmer commitment to the drive, and more powerful influence to align the whole industry across nations. This is what the organizational leaders are who drive companies that will continue to proper for a long long time to come. I wish the cell phone industry will follow the same path in the near future. I wonder what company will take a lead on that.

Just a though!

Re: Worldwide Warranty

For all products there is an International Warranty.

Motorola, Sony Ericsson and other mobile companies do offer worldwide warranty.

Its only Nokia which does not give worldwide warranty.

They have attitude problem of being number one.

Soon there number one slot is going to be taken over by some other good professional phone company who knows how to care about there customers.

Its just an EYE WASH that its NOKIA CARE.

They should say we are NOKIA CARE but care only for our sales and after that we dont know who are you??????

Re: Worldwide Warranty

Since when has Motorola offered a global warranty? At least not in November 2006:

Nor does SE it seems:

Re: Worldwide Warranty

In Europe at least there is a Europewide warranty on Nokia mobile phones i.e. if you buy the phone in an EU member state then you can get it repaired under warranty in any other EU member state.

You can see why they do this to present a level playing field for distributors and retailers - all in the region will have to buy and sell at similar prices. And as mentioned there are tax implications for governments. Not sure how other manufacturers get round this...

Those warranties might not really be from the manufacturers - it could be that the store you bought them from is just saying there's an international warranty. I hope to be wrong here, so can you show any Moto or SE webpage or other reference that would prove this? To my knowledge Nokia products bought in Singapore are not covered in Europe as there is no intl Nokia warranty.

these NOKIA forum has also become discrimatory by deleting the topics or replies which goes against them.

I doubt the the fairness of this forum also.

Re: Worldwide Warranty

hi all,
i am a little bit cofused... :smileysad:

does nokia provides international warrenty from any country...?

if it is not there, wil they provide any international warrenty in near future...?

can users rise arequest for it....?

the old nokia phone owners may get a chance to use this facility...?

if nokia provides international warrenty, it is very very useful for customers, as there is a tax difference in different countries.

I very much doubt that card would be of any use in an European service center. Nokia does not provide intl warranty - I'd say you were just duped.

Just read what it says on the Europe site at
www.europe.nokia.com/repair

It does not mention anything about countries outside Europe.

Yeah.Thanks wicker_man .:smileyhappy:
Now I agree wid it.It is somethin other dan a warrenty card.:smileysad:
And to 6280, I dont the "thing" y got from clubnokia is not a warrenty card either.:smileysad:
May be somethin other else.
International warrenty card is actually felt whenever one needs to go outside one's country and it is important if he or she finds the phone got busted in the other country he or she may get it cured by NSC usin the wareenty card.

I hadn't noticed that - at least not for a while.

There used to be a mod (who shall remain nameless) who was a bit of an eejit and would remove perfectly valid posts, but lately I think they've been pretty fair and only really removed off-topic or abusive posts.

I've had some posts removed recently but in each case I had an e-mail from the mod that explained why it had been done and they all seemed pretty reasonable.

Re: Worldwide Warranty

I agree. And also I think Nokia is allowing a lot of people to vent out much more than some other companies on their boards. For example Apple used to censor any negative comments about their products on their forums a few years ago, I don't know if they are any more tolerant these days.

Re: Worldwide Warranty

I want to add my own report here.

I had the same problem here in US with a Nokia N80ie made in HK, which I inadvertently bought from the grey market. In fact I almost returned it for that reason, except I let myself be convinced by the vendor that I would be able to return to Nokia HK for service, but my experience was the same as others have reported here.

I would suggest bill me a service fee for an "out of territory" phone, but don't cold shoulder me. In my case I had no idea I was buying a non-US phone until it arrived. I had no intention to. So I was had. I did not like the N80 too much anyway, but I would not mind having it as a backup, so I'd like Nokia to fix it. What if I have a problem with my new N95 when I'm on a business trip in Europe shortly (I will be!) - do I have to fly back to the US???

This is not a reasonable situation, since by nature unlocked phones appeal to international travellers.
