I'm one of the several UNHAPPY owners of N97 and its plethora of bugs. Some are incredibly stupid and I wonder how Nokia's Quality Team let them reach the clients.
1. Some times when you copy MP3 files to the mass memory, the music player won't recognize the new files. The files are there and I can open them using the file manager but the player simply refuses to update the music list. The same thing happen with videos or image files.
2. We also have a problem that is exactly the opposite of the one descrived above. Some times you delete a music file, video or image but the player thinks that the file is still there. We usually see a broken green picture that represents the ghost file. It's there forever.
Now, tell me: how hard is to create a code to manually refresh the music, video or image database with the new files listed in the mass memory (problem 1) or how hard is to create a code to automatically remove the image, video or music entry from the database when the files cannot be found anymore.
I know there are some solutions for these issues in the forum but they are unexceptable and sometimes they don't work! To ask an user to open a hidden folder (E:\Private) and delete certain files with unutterable names is not what a good user experience, especially when the problems happens quite often.
N97 was supposed to be your flagship phone and I'm amazed to still see stupid bugs so much time after its release. Simply FAIL Nokia!

I'm not sure about the pictures and videos, but for the music player, there is an option called refresh music player. Just go to Music>options>refresh/update library.
Oh yeah, I remember, for videos and pics, simply going in, out, and in again fixes the thumbnails.

its not a bug... or rather, its just the way you're copying it.
if you drag and drop or use ovi suite/pc suite then you will need to go into music player, options, refresh library.
however, if you dont want to do this, connect your n97 up to your computer via 'media transfer'. then open windows media player (works best with wmp10 and 11) and it should detect the n97. if it pops up a window saying sync options and stuff, click cancel or it will sync your entire library. instead, just drag playlists or mp3s to the sync tab of windows media player and click sync (make sure youve chosen n97 mass storage, although some computers will read it as 5800, just choose 5800 mass storage).
after its copied all your music, unplug your n97 from your pc, go to music player (might freeze up for a little while depending on how much music you just copied, but just wait it out). when it stops freezing, all your newly sync'd music will be in your library, and any playlists you sync'd will appear in the playlist menu.
personally, i found this to be the simplest option with every symbian phone, and every mp3 player that has playlist support for that matter. dont bother with ovi suite, its too much of a hassle.

And, as many have proved by now, Nokia really don't return calls even though they say they will, when it comes to problems with the N97.
And no, I don't expect the N97 to ever work properly. Simple math. Nokia made a bunch of money on selling this phone. It have a terrible reputation by now. Putting a big effort into fixing it will not be profitable. People have already spent about all the money they ever will, which comes to Nokia. Putting more money into it now is not good business. And there isn't much point from a brand saving perspective either. The N97 is a lemon, and the effort to turn that reputation will be huge, and possibly not doable because of hardware shortcomings (mainly too little ram, and a slightly too slow processor).
So they will continue with some face-saving updates so that you atleast have the semblance of "things will get better" to keep critical people hushed for a while longer. Soon the N97 will be enough forgotten that they can altogether drop it.
Sad, but I can't see another outcome. ![]()

I didn't say ONLY mp3 files. The biggest issue is in the pictures and video files and there's no such option to refresh them.
And btw, "the way I copy the files is a lame excuse". If Nokia created a way to copy the files using Windows Explorer (the method that I prefer to use) and I want to use it then it must work.
For example: Microsoft Word has a keyboard shortcut to save the documents (CTRL+S) but I prefer to click on the "Save" icon intead. Lets pretend that for some reason the "Save" icon doesn't work all the time and the document is not saved. If I call Microsft tech support reporting this bug do you think they will say: "Oh, it's a not a bug, it's the way you're saving the document. Use the keyboard shortcut instead" -_-
Simply pathetic!

I was about to say the same thing.
Nokia tech support and Help Care (I prefer to say "Helpless Care") simply don't answer us. I didn't create this post because I'm really expecting a fix. I just want to spread the word about how bad Nokia's engineers developed this phone, the huge amount of problems found by the users (the issues that I described here are just the tip of the iceberg) and the way tech support pretends to have everything over control.
No wonder Nokia's VP openly admitted that N97 had a horrible feedback from the users around the world.
I have Nokia phones since 1998 and this is my last one!

to all the posters who said use the refresh library option, the OP, although not as clearly as possible, was obviously talking about the bug where the music database corrupts and the refresh library option fails to find newly added music.
it's completely unacceptable that you have to delete hidden files to fix this problem, it's another example of the poor Nokia user experience and the disgrace that is the N97.
