All, I'm wondering if the N97 will get another firmware update now that v22 is more than 6 months old.
Does Nokia provide any sort of roadmap for their devices (especially smartphones) or have an official update release cycle?
Even better, does someone have any solid information regarding a firmware update coming this year? I've seen rumours of this since before Christmas, but with nothing showing up yet I wonder if it really is only a rumour?
Cheers,
Jeremy

The n97 is dead.

I struggle to accept that. I don't disagree with you, but I sure as hell do not believe this is *right*.
The current firmware is reasonably stable (not perfect, but ok) and this smart phone is less than 2 years old.
Also, the replacement (N8) is only just out, so there are people who have purchased an N97 or N97 Mini within the last 12 months, who are still under manufacturers' warranty, and have every right to expect some life and ongoing support out of their purchase.
This phone cost me as much as an iPhone, and I bought it when the 3GS was just released. The Apple user base still gets firmware updates. **bleep** is Nokia doing? Burning its users on purpose?

I wish I had done a bit of research before getting my N97 mini only yesterday and I'm having issues already! ![]()

Despite the remaining bugs, and the fact that the N97 still does not incorporate the features that it was marketed to have (including deeply integrated skype), Nokia seem to have turned their back on their loyal customers that bought, at great expense, their so-called 'flagship' model.
Today's news of the tie-up with Microsoft and the side-lining of Symbian seems to confirm that for Nokia the N97 is dead - a debacle that Nokia would rather forget.

Nokia generally abandon support for their devices 12-18 months after release, or sooner if they release a particularly fancy new platform in that time.

Unfortunately the issue is not Nokia abandoning support for the N97 - if that were just case it would be one thing - N97 buyers not getting anything better than they were promised in the first place...
The issue with the N97 is quite the opposite - the OS still has bugs and worse Nokia has still not lived-up to its marketing claims it made for the N97. The N97 still does not today live up to the promises that Nokia made for it; it does not have all the features that were promised and hence cannot do those things for which consumers bought the device.

@SportsBiker, here in NZ that is in contradiction to one of our laws, the Consumers Guarantees Act. That makes it unlawful to sell items not fit for purpose.
Now, that may be a hard case to prove for the N97, as it's primarily a phone, and has features that do work, but there's definitely a gap between the sales and technical with this model!

Same in UK @jeremysherriff...
Unfortunately it is not so much the legal aspect but the ethical issues related to Nokia's marketing claims for the N97 and its continuing apparent unwillingness to make sure that it fulfills the legitimate expectations that they engendered.

I think you should google for "The pygmy shrew", watch it, then substitute N97 for Shrew at the end.
Actually, substitute Nokia for Shrew at the end.
