I think it depends of what you need exactly !
Symbian OS is an excellent OS for phones.
MAEMO is an OS which applies more to devices which are more computers than telephones...

Symbian^2 is being finalised this year. Symbian^1 uses S60 5th as its base platform. Nokia upgrading the entire platform of the N97 doesn't really make economical sense for them. They'd prefer to release a new phone running ^2 and have everyone upgrade.. Put it this way, if they released a whole new OS for the N97, that would be a first!!
Strangely, this was not uncommon for their tablet range. The N800 ran both OS2007 and OS2008.. but unfortunately none of their older tablets will run Maemo5.. booo!!! EOL hardware!! booo!!
I wouldn't hold my breath for an N97 with Symbian^2, but maybe a full jump to Symbian^1?? That'd be interesting!!

Have you installed apps in your phone? If yes, uninstall all the apps, and try a factory settings, or a soft reset.
Factory settings reset. In standby, dial *#7780# and the phone's security code (the nokia's default security code is 12345). This reset restores phone's original settings.
Soft reset. In standby dial *#7370# and the phone's security code (the Nokia's default security code is 12345). Soft reset deletes ALL your phone's data.![]()

Unfortunately mate, you can't compare a computer running windows to that of a mobile phone running on Symbian!
The N96 has known issues! Why did you go for it? Install Jbak Taskman, may be that should help to prevent crashes.

Don't install any app. Uninstall all the apps you have installed in your phone, and don't install again any app!
Some phones, are sensitive to apps. May the phone (like mine) is problematic,or maybe the software version
If uninstalling doesn't work (after a week), then take your phone to a Nokia care point (if your phone continue to crashes).

lol its simple really
once a os is on the phone its not changing so demanding MAEMO on the N96 that runs s603rd fp2
is a waste of a thread and lacks logic big time. now the only excuse i can see for such statements is pure user ignorance of how things work in the mobile telephony or computer or any other company's world for that matter.

That being said, and I agree with you.. The N900 might break that mold as it were. The N800 shipped with OS2007 but could be upgraded to OS2008!!! Perhaps in the future, maybe a year from now, the N900 will be able to install the latest maemo os.. That has previously made the tablets attractive, and from a phone point of view would be awesome!! Winmo phones have done it for a while..I remember upgrading an ipaq many many years ago!
You are right.. the chances of a Symbian handset having a Maemo alternative or upgrade are slim.. The screen is much lower res, the ram is far smaller and the storage is miniscule in comparison.. Symbian is designed for tiny devices, maemo really isn't.. it needs much much more breathing space..
It ain't going to happen but frankly I don't think I'd want it.. I am a Symbian fan at the end of the day.. (Maemo 5 doesn't yet support MMS or bluetooth modem support so be thankful that Symbian has sorted)

yes you are absolutely right MAEMO i believe will actually update thier os like tablets did in the past, but this is normal behavior for this OS. it is NOT normal behavior for symbian OS's and it has never been. that was my point. sorry if i did not make it clear enough![]()

sad to say but all phones released now will not be able to upgrade to symbian^2. its like trying to put a lamborghini engine in a toyota corolla. it will just not work.
main reason being the capability of the curent devices. will the hardware ie. circuit board, graphics processor, ram, be able to run it. think of running crysis on a pc you bout in 2000.
for us to enjoy symbian^2 we will have to buy the phones nokia make that's running the software. who knows maybe s60v3 will replace s40.
and for us to enjoy meamo we too have to use the devices that comes with the software. 2010 will be make or break year for nokia, they have to come good or risk the chance of falling off the top of the ladder.
