How the heck do I sort these annoying 'no WLAN' pop ups that kill my active desktop etc the second I leave the house.  WLAN works great in the house but I expect it to use second preference 3G when it dissapears - not to constantly cry about it!!!

A Twitter friend suggested its something to do with roaming - not International, just roaming away from the house!

For the life of me I cant find this menu though - after 2 days!

WHY is information on this complex phone SO difficult to find? Whatever happened to proper user manuals?

Turn WLAN scanning off.

You neglected to say what phone you're using so I can't offer more detailed help.

But that disables WLAN and is a buried menu...  On my N95 I walked in the house and it connected by WLAN I walked out it used 3G.  No hassles.

The phone is a N97 - apologies.

This could be related to 'roaming' but I cant find the menu after 3 days...

Gosh I wish there was a proper book like my £100 Sony camera came with - showing the menu trees with a description of functions/options.

Turning WLAN scanning off does not disable WLAN. It just stops the phone permanently searching for WLAN hotspots.

If you have applications set to use the default access point and if your WLAN hotspot is at a higher priority than 3G then you'll get the behaviour you're after.

Ahh!  OK - seems logical to me that not scanning for a WLAN is not looking for one - ever!

Not at all. If the phone knows about your WLAN because you've saved the access point in your "Destinations", why would you want it to scan for it again? That function's purpose is merely to seek out new access points that you've not already saved.
