Hi!
I´m now pretty **bleep** off on Nokia because they haven´t fixed so you can recieve AND send smileys in a phone that costs around 6000:- (SEK) This sucks BIGTIME I think!!!
I´ve used the N95 and the N96 and I´ve paid for the "**bleep**" A-sms program that was horrible just to get and send smileys (but my friends couldn´t read them), and now I can´t use that because its S60V3...!
How can we tell NOKIA to shape up and make the AvatarSMS (for example) available in every country not just only in Hongkong.....
Yeah, you read it right, the Avatar SMS program exists and it works on N97 but you can´t send it in Sweden or other countries other than Hongkong!!!!
PLEASE! EVERYONE THAT WANT A FREE SMSPROGRAM FOR N97!!!
WRITE SOMETHING IN THIS TREAD SO MAYBE NOKIA READS THIS AND WE CAN BE FULLY SATISFIED WITH THE N97 WITH SMILEYS SOMETIME SOON!!!!! Sorry, capslock.... ![]()

1. it's an sms not a chat program.
2. settle down.
3. They can't even make the phone work let alone add useless features.
4. smileys are gay

I don't know anyone who actually uses them. The standard : ) is adequate.

Great topic, nearly every reply has made me laugh. Everyone enjoys a smiley, its so much better to put your point across in a smiley other than :-) etc, as doing this on the N97 on the flip out keyboard takes an amazing 6 key presses and all you get is :-) A smiley is so much easier to read, thus why id say it was invented.
As for smiley's being aimed at 12-15 year old's, yes the younger kids may use them more, but ive been using them since they first came out. Msn wouldnt be the same without them either.
The N97 may have features other phones are lacking, but in my personal view i will never own a Nokia ever again after this disaster of what is supposed to be a "smart phone" No wonder the N97 mini and N900 have been released within 6 months of the N97's release. Also being a UK user i have been shafted shall i say in the firmware update stakes. Perhaps i will be able to update to the new V2.0 next year by the time my network operator approves it.

I understand smileys may seem to be directed towards teenagers but all my adult friends use them. Sometimes the smiley is even all that needs to be said in the SMS and it makes the point quickly and clearly. They help convey the one thing that is hard to get into written text - emotion. It's ironic that this very text editor has them. ![]()
Personally I really miss them on my new Nokia N97 and can't understand why they can't at least be an optional extra.
NOKIA Please Bring Back Smileys

When writing the message with the number pad (keyboard not out) pressing the '1' key repeatadly brings up the smiles like on the N95/N96 etc
tbh why do you need to have a icon like
when a simple
does exactly the same job as a icon, is compatible with every phone going and does not make you look like a child.
I love smilies, don't get me wrong, but to waste time on them implementing them when ther eis other options available and that he N97 is marketed more at the older buisness user it would be a waste of time. I would rather have bugs fixed and have a more stable N97

I think it's silly to presume that only kids use smileys. My mum loves them!
Anyway, they do convey a message without words, and th fact is when you buy a phone, especially one thats so bloody expensive, you expect to have basic smileys.
Im really annoyed at this because I was going to get the iphone but opted for this instead. Iphone has emoji smileys and everything now, abit **bleep** off!
They should atleast create an update giving us the choice to use them.

If you really want smileys, go get funsms or a-sms. I cant give you links since ovi store seems to block certain apps per country, but you could google for them. I dont have any direct links.

I agree! I don't care too much for smiley's, but I do care about Nokia's SMS app. It is lagging behind all other phones. How about threated SMS + emoticons? That would bring Nokia's app to the 21st century for once!!!
PS: I should not need to buy any application to achieve this. LG, HTC, Android, WinMo, and about every other phone out there are capable of doing this out of the box.

If you want annoying smilies, buy a S40 phone. That catered for the market who just wants a simple phone that can send sms and call, and smilies. You mum, you old grandpa, or a 14-year old.
If you want a more advanced phone, that dont have them buy a S60 phone.
personally the first thing i turn of in MSN is the damn smilies.
If i want to write a smiley I do, the real old way...not with emoticons.

Hi, folks !
I won Nokia N97mini on contest for network Eng. Real small Laptop !!! Imagine my surprise when in sending SMS I discovered that there is NO similes !? WTFO ???
This little shortcuts for whole sentence of written emotions are MUST HAWE - specially in SMS !!!
Without them I spend more money on explaining, for it takes more massages, and thus more money !!!
But as of couple days, my N97mini was upgraded (~15Mb) over UMTS, and NOW there IS smiley in SMS that I received from my friend ! So in reply, I pressed "Sym" (symbols) on keyboard and THERE THEY ARE !!!!
Happy SMS-ing folks !!! ![]()
