Re: VIDEO CALLS on the N8

From my personal experience video calling directly from your can be a little hit and miss because it requires both parties to have compatible phones, both parties connected to 3G and on networks which support the service.

Once you satisfy all the above conditions, it is just a case of calling the contact and pressing the icon for video call.

Re: VIDEO CALLS on the N8

Ive video called with a work colleague.

We both us n8's but his contract date plan gives him so many minutes for video calls.

Im on payg so mine does not so the cost would be higher.

In my opinion its a bit of a gimmick and will not at this time be actively using this type of call often.

Nokia n8.
iphone 4 16gb - black

Be happy !!

Any phone that supports the 3G video calling standard can call another compatible phone (even if it is a different brand of phone) but only if the network fully supports it and both customers are in good 3G coverage areas. In some countries both parties may need to enable video calling on their accounts to be able to use it. Also not all networks support cross network video calling so you may only be able to video call people on the same network as you.

By any chance have you been trying to video call someone with an iPhone 4? If so that won't work because the iPhone does not support standard video calling.

I regularly video call from my N8 to an N97 mini and another N8. All are on 3g and on the same network as I previously suggested.

Re: VIDEO CALLS on the N8

So when nokia was brainstorming about what to add to the N8 they decided video calling was a good idea but when one employee ask "video calling to who?" everyone else was like "well everyone is going to buy this phone so we don't have to worry about that"........................I'm not trying to b a **bleep** I mean I goggled this to the point of seeing the end of the interwebs and mostly found fring and skype solutions but if nokia put video calling in the OS then why not use it but the only people that i hear have succses storys with it is people in Europe that pay for video call minutes last time I checked AT&T in the US doen't offer such plans and if they did no thanks.

The issue's you are having with video calling aren't a problem with the N8 or with Nokia. You'd experience the same problems with any brand (that uses the 3G video calling standard) on your network.

All the hassle and stipulations that surround video calling is one of the main reasons that it never became popular. Video calling does work if you have good networks that take the feature seriously and it even works across different brands. This is also why many people have turned to the internet for video calling with things like facetime and fring.

I agree with Psycho and it is also more a gimmick than anything else. The only reason I use it from occasionally is Vodafone Irl charge video calls the same normal voice calls and it even comes off your free call minutes just like any voice call.

Looks like Voda Irl take the service seriously if they allow it to come out of your minutes bundle! It's a shame networks weren't doing that years ago, the feature may have taken off.

I'm on Orange UK and they charge 30.6p to video call another orange customer or 51p to video call someone on another network!

It's a shame that people often feel the need to blame the device manufacturer when video calling doesn't work when it's nearly always the network that's to blame!

Perhaps you could try complaining about AT&T's poor video calling service here:

Re: VIDEO CALLS on the N8

I've used Video calls a few times, just to see if it works on several Nokia handsets, it does, but really can't see the attraction and would not lose any sleep if the facility was removed, if I really want to 'see' someone via a wireless connection, a PC is a far better experience, IMHO, and I really think Applea 'invention' of Video calling will be one of there few inventions to fall flat on it's face !!
