Tips on the N97

Hi Everyone,

I've been playing with my new N97 - and have discovered some solutions to things that I have been reading on these forums as usability questions.  I'm not going to go back over the whole thread to find the indiviudal posts, so this is just a collection from what I have been reading.

  1. Deleting multiple messages and files is possible easily.  I read a post where someone complained there had been no improvement, it was still one by one.  Highlight the first message, hold the Shift key and click on the last message - this will mark all the ones with a tick, hit the Trashcan, confirm delete x messages/files.
  2. I saw some people wanted more than 4 contacts or 4 shortcuts on the home screen.  This can be done.  Simply add the "Contacts 2" or "Shortcuts 2"  widget to the homescreen.  Naturally you have to sacrifice something else, such as the Facebook widget, the choice is yours.
  3. Yes, you can change the font size for text messages, and for icons and icon titles.  Nice for use more mature users!  Look in hte options, the settings are there.
  4. Slow transition from portrait to landscape may be due to how you hold your phone - odd, but try.  I actually thought mine had stopped working (at 2AM when I was dog tired, but I was playing).  If you hold the phone too "flat" in your hand, it has difficulty sensing the change in orientation, which makes sense if you think about it.  For a comparison, hold the [hone in the palm of your hand on it's edge and then change the orientation - see the difference.
  5. I downloaded from the OVI store with no problems, HOWEVER I did find the user interface for this a little confusing, so I understand how some people may have download problems.  This is not an issue with the phone, but with the usability of the web site.

I think that is all I can remember for now.

Suffice to say I am very happy with my phone, so far I have NO problems with it at all.  NAM version, purchased in Australia.

Re: Tips on the N97

au_n97_user,

Thank you for the deleting tip..

By the way, based on your tip, I noticed that on music player I can select (mark) several tracks by clicking on them while pressing the shift key. Also, if I keep on pressing the shift key & I select a track, all the tracks between the last selected & the latest one are marked..

That's really helpful especially when you have huge number of tracks & you want to make playlists...

Thanks..

I will try the other tips as well....

If you like my post & find it helpful click on the Kudos button... Thanks.. ;-)

I still can't figure tip 4 I have tried holding differently but it's still slow. It goes fast when effects are turned off though but where's the fun in that??

Re: Tips on the N97

I didn't know about deleting multiple messages using the shift key so thanks for that. However, I still find it easier to just go to options then "mark all" and then delete, namely because it's quite awkard to hold the shift key whilst pressing down on the d-pad because both buttons are on the far left of the keyboard.

Also, this method only works with the keyboard out.

Secondly, could you please please tell me how to change icons/icon titles?

I go into settings and then display and there is only "fonts" but nothing on icons. Where is this under??
