The Black N79 (to which Nokia UK are oblivious)

This morning, my attention was drawn to this Nokia page:

http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=products,n79,landing,news,color-overlay,news

It features a black Nokia N79!

The question is, where do I get one in the UK?

I called Nokia UK but they've never heard of the black version. *sigh*

It is not available to buy anywhere yet. It's exact release date is unknown.

Unfortunately all you can do is wait.

The same happened with the black N82. Images appeared of it several months before it was actually available.

The N79 actually look good in black.

Oh this is so annoying because I was just about to buy a white one.

I actually didn't think much of the white one until I saw it in a store with my own eyes. My only gripe is that the Euro version doesn't come with a white Xpress-On cover (unless you buy a seal-grey N79, which I don't think looks as nice).

The black version however... wow, it not only looks fantastic, but even comes with the perfect selection of Xpress-On covers for a black handset. Argh. Want! Urgently!

I wish Nokia were more forthcoming with information.

Would it really be so difficult for them to give an indication about when the black model will hit the market?

How much of a gap was there between the release of the N82 Titanium, and the black version?

I think BLACK color is more likely between everyone.
and NOKIA should notice and at least realise black versions FIRSTLY.

Around 4-6 months depending on the country.

The UK didn't get the black version until orange decided to sell it.

I've yet to see the white/grey N79 offered by any of the UK networks or major stores yet.

Thanks for the info.

I was just looking around the regional Nokia sites and noticed they haven't made the N82 available in black from their own Finland store (www.nokia.fi). But it's available at their UK store (www.nokia.co.uk).

Weird marketing.

I realise of course that I have the power to make the black N79 available. All I have to do is order the white version, and you can guarantee that within a week, the black one will suddenly appear in stores up and down the country. :smileyvery-happy:

True, things like that often happen to me :smileyvery-happy:

Have you considered the 5800xm instead?

It has a cracking feature set to price ratio, looks stunning and will be available on nearly all UK networks at the end of the month at quite a low price (or free depending on tariff).

It's only £249 to buy sim free. The wait for mine is killing me. I nearly gave in and paid extra to import it but i'm glad I waited for the low UK price.

I hope this Black version gets a release over here, my next handset if it does.

I have seen it, but didn't realise it was that cheap.

What would I miss after one year of an N95-1?

I was looking forward to the FM transmitter in particular in the N79, but notice there isn't one in the 5800XM.

I'm also worried about buying such a newly released phone after my N85 experience. (Mine fell apart within an hour of delivery.)

What is the camera quality like? Are there any examples on the web? I can't find any.

I also like to install Mobbler (Last.fm app) on any Nokia device I own, but I'm not sure it will work with the 5800XM.

I must admit... I'm very tempted by this phone now that you mentioned the price.

Re: The Black N79 (to which Nokia UK are oblivious)

I was hoping that my next phone would have an FM transmitter too but it's not a deal breaker for me. If I want one they are only around £10 now.

From what i've read it does appear to be well built.

This is a good review with some camera samples:
www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-5800-2-en.shtml

It does have it's bugs and some applications aren't fully compatible. I don't know about mobbler, sorry.

It's compatible!

http://code.google.com/p/mobbler/wiki/Compatibility

I really wasn't expecting that.

The camera quality isn't bad (it beats the iPhone by a wide margin, but that's not difficult).

I'm so on the verge of pre-ordering.

I wonder which Nokia FM transmitter is best for this model.

(Uh, why is it that whenever I start a thread about one Nokia phone, I always end up discussing another. :smileyvery-happy:)

Re: The Black N79 (to which Nokia UK are oblivious)

Glad to hear that it's compatible.

The camera quality isn't an issue for me as my second phone is an N82. My N96's camera has had very little use because of the N82. :smileyhappy:

Blame me for sending the thread onto another phone :smileyvery-happy:

I was thinking of buying this FM transmitter:
www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4-/3516493/Nokia-CA-300-FM-Transmitter/Product.html

I'm buying the 5800xm sim free and staying on a simplicity contract with O2. I'll probably have to go back to a full contract to get the N97 later this year.

Re: The Black N79 (to which Nokia UK are oblivious)

Well I tried to pre-order hours ago, and thought I'd succeeded despite the confirmation page not loading.

Then I realised it hadn't worked, so I tried again and got this error upon clicking the 'confirm order' button:

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/670/nokiaerrorie1.png

I called Nokia UK (just before they closed) but they were no help). Hours later I tried again. Got the error again. So I tried with IE7. Same error. It's definitely a server side error. I just hope the administrator *is* being notified because this has been going on for six hours so far at least.

How many pre-orders are Nokia UK losing due to this online store problem?

Re: The Black N79 (to which Nokia UK are oblivious)

I've had trouble ordering from there in the past and gave up.

I pre-ordered mine from mobile fun a while ago. They've agreed to price match nokia and even deliver it to an alternative address (which nokia won't do).

I'd rather order it from Nokia UK due to their generous refund policy. I only got an N85 from them in November because they said I could return it (free) in seven days even if there was nothing wrong with it... because I was worried after reading reports about the d-panel falling off. (It was falling off on arrival, so I had total peace of mind about getting the refund.) So, if I don't like the 5800 XM (seems unlikely TBH), I can just send it back.

I wouldn't mind ordering via the website (instead of phone) too just for the £15 quid cashback by clicking through from Quidco.com.

Unfortunately Nokia could care less that it's been impossible to pre-order the 5800 XM via their website for the past 24 hours. I spoke to numerous people at Nokia UK this morning and was amazed by their attitude.

Maybe the salesperson who answers the phone gets commission for each handset they sell, so that's why they don't care about the website getting fixed.

I wonder how many orders Nokia are losing due to this problem?

The online store isn't actually run by nokia any more, it's run by a 3rd party company. Although the nokia name is still used.

I believe it's dial-a-phone that handles it for them now. I think they took over the store when they started offering contracts direct through the nokia store.

Don't know where it's failing for you but just tried it on firefox 3 and it let me go all the way to entering my card details. I didn't go any further than that.

I see they have updated the delivery date to the 23rd of February today. Wonder if thats because of the high demand?

Other sites like mobilefun and expansys are still claiming the date is 28th/29th January. Both of those sites will allow you to return it within 14 days for a full refund.
