Sticky tape, Sharpies, Copper Wire and Plectrums - **bleep**

I'm reposting this post of mine from another forum because I feel it's relevant.

Now, as you all know, I'm generally a big fan of Nokia and their fantabulous heroic customer support but I'm going to take a moment to play devils advocate here...

Is it me, or have us consumers gone completely mental! We pay 100's of pounds/dollars/euros/small shiny pebbles for our "flagship" device and yet when faced with a seeming epidemic of issues with the N97 we're happy to: -

  • Use bits of sticky tape to stop our lenses from scratching themselves
  • Draw on our phones with marker pens to stop the flash from ruining the pictures
  • Stick bits of copper wire inside our phones to make the GPS work properly
  • Utilise bits of random plastic to lever parts off our phones to stop them hurting themselves

It's like the Blue Peter guide to phone repair in here some days!!! Just take 2 toilet rolls and some sticky backed plastic...

But seriously, isn't it about time we took a stand?

This forum is primarily for users to help each other troubleshoot issues, if you want to make a stand against Nokia there is a link above marked "Contact us".

Your N97 is no longer covered by its manufacturer's warranty if you have levered parts off it or stuck bits of wire into it, a sensible consumer would have taken the phone to be fixed under warranty. There are people out there having problems, but as always there are also plenty who are not having problems. Very few people go to any forum to say "It's great, I love it!" - only the ones with issues sign up and type, hence the apparent bad press. I'm not saying the N97 is perfect, it's clear that there are issues with it as a model, but jerry-rigging your phone yourself is no solution.

Your particular N97 may well be a useless brick, but that's your fault for interfering with it instead of exercising your consumer rights and getting it sorted by an authorized repairer.

I'm making a comment, addressed to the community at large. Is that not helpful to the community?

I've not done any of the things I mentioned above. I held out and got a new replacement frrom Nokia.

I'm just suggesting that if you have one of the N97s with issues, don't accept a replacement. Don't accept a refurb. This is an expensive consumer device and if you've paid the money you should get one that works first time, out of the box.

Oh. And I just noticed I got part of my subject "bleeped" - lol.

Shouldn't it be WTB instead?

Well said, agree totally and sick of the serial moaners, ranters and trolls that are infesting this forum at the moment.

Re: Sticky tape, Sharpies, Copper Wire and Plectrums - **bleep**

Ah. Right. OK. I get it. I'm not being positive enough...

The N97 has issues. I think it's reasonable to talk about the issues in a forum about the N97. I think potential purchasers are going to come here and have a right to a clear and open view of some of the issues that they might face rather than the smiley happy rose tinted world of everything is great...

Regarding a forum (thanks dictionary.com) : -

n., pl. fo·rums also fo·ra (fôr'ə, fōr'ə).

    1. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business.
    2. A public meeting place for open discussion.
    3. A medium for open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper, a radio or television program, or a website.
  1. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation.
  2. A court of law; a tribunal.

I'm just voicing ideas. Openly. And suggesting that perhaps if consumers were less likely to accept hardware issues such as these the manufacturer would go to greater lengths to ensure that they didn't occur in the first place. Does that make me a serial moaner, a ranter or a troll ?

Hands up anybody who finds this post useful or interesting...

Perhaps we should have a "who thinks I'm a troll" poll :smileywink:

Re: Sticky tape, Sharpies, Copper Wire and Plectrums - **bleep**

We're all capable of picking up a dictionary, thank you. We refer to this as a forum, but the correct name is "Nokia Support Discussions", the most important of those words being Support...

Indeed, in cases where there are known issues with some models, like the N97, you should not accept a replacement because the replacement may have the same issue (in the case of the camera lens and GPS, anyway); the warranty will have that fixed and your phone will be OK - much safer than getting a replacement in this case.

Discuss on a forum to your heart's content, but most consumers would prefer to take an action that helps solve their issue. If all you do is talk to people who can't influence the situation, you'll just get yourself even more wound up and angry for no reason.

Ah. But I'm not angry. Or wound up

My replacement N97 arrived this morning. And I'm advising anybody else who's had their N97 repaired already to hold out for a new one if it happens again.

And I'm advising anybody to not ever ever physically modify their devices with pens/wires/bits of string.

Appreciate that nobody here can influence my situation, but perhaps I can influence other people to get their own issues resolved.

Dave - you're absolutely right. It's crazy. However, you remember the Hans Christian Andersen tale of "The Emperor's New Clothes"? You remind me of the little boy in the tale.

You're p***ing in the wind offering these thoughts here. the N97 is "A wondefrul suit of clothes". The baying masses, as you've just seen, will always shout you down. These people are only interested in acquiring gold stars, to get to the top of the class. The sooner they drop this "Kudos" rubbish the better.

It's true to say that there must be many happy N97 users out there, who never visit forums to express their joy. However, it's also true to say that there are many users of all kind of products who never discover the existence of forums like this at all. These people, therefore, never find an opportunity to express their dissatisfaction to anybody.

You've seen that, despite all the adverse comments in many forums, Nokia have to be dragged kicking and screaming to acknowledge any imperfection at all in their product. So what chance do the unsung masses of unhappy users have, to have their disappointment compensated? None, is my opinion.

I'm afraid your crusade is doomed, thanks to people such as those who have resonded to your comments here.

However, full marks my friend for daring to stand up for what is (obviouly) right, against the facile opposition of the camp followers you see here.

Re: Sticky tape, Sharpies, Copper Wire and Plectrums - **bleep**

According to the reporter in this review,  Nokia VP Anssi Vanjoki confirmed that Nokia are very much aware that the N97 is "badly in need of a patch-up" and he apparently "stressed how quickly Nokia was working to address criticism".

So there you go, something for the trolls and the anti-trolls: there are problems with the N97 but Nokia's aware of them and is doing it's best to address them.

Now can we please get back to dissing the iPhone .. :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Sticky tape, Sharpies, Copper Wire and Plectrums - **bleep**

I am standing next to you Dave ..

I am a N97 user 3 months now .. and lots of the time goes pocking the internet .. hoping to find a solution

to the 2 biggest problems  I have .. self scratching lens and the faulty GPS .. at Wednesday .. I decided to take it back for repair .. and they told me that self scratching lens goes as accesoaries and can not be fixed for free .. they only can try to fix the GPS .. SO WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO  ...

I paid 500 Euro .. so as far as Nokia is conserned .. al is OK .. tey got my money ... But At the moment .. I do not have a phone .. (ok I am using an old one) Do not have contacts .. If I want to call somebody .. I need to check my notebook :smileyhappy: feels like 60s ...

What if they say the GPS cannot be fixed .. so I need to go to make the antena ajustments ..

and so on .. and so on

Instead of using the phone ... I fight with it .. I can not enjoy it .. the way it was suposed to be .. a gadjet that cost me 500 euro ..

OK .. lets put that aside .. I could feel better if Nokia make a statement saying that they are aware of those two problems .. and they will fix it if you bring the phone to them ..

but 3 months .. there is no such statement ...

botomline .. I paid the money I want the service .. but hey .. no service

SO stop being wise to Dave  .. He did the N97 comunity very good by starting the petition and moaning all over the interenet ..

SO Best of luck Dave .. and Keep up the good work

I want to give you all my kudos blah

In response to the people who put things on here like "this is a help forum you should use the contact us button" GET LOST, if it wasn't for people on here typing there problems with the n97 then I would have bought one of these bricks, instead im am now going to wait for either the n97 mini or the x6. People are allowed to express there opinions on here its a self help group not a dictatorship as some of the higher ranked would like,  Stop getting on peoples case that they shouldn't be posting on here and lets start supporting each other. Unless we as users start standing up for our rights then nokia will continue to release products that they are aware are sub standard, We should have to be on here looking for ways to solve problems such as regular crashing of software etc, these problems should be sorted before the phone is placed on general sale, We should not be the trial users fixing nokias problems. And before the certain ones with may gold stars start to rip me apart this is my opinion and I am entitled to it THANK YOU!

I dont pretend to know everything like some people on these boards i am just trying to help. Its not all about the kudos.

Re: Sticky tape, Sharpies, Copper Wire and Plectrums - **bleep**

i sent back my n97 for faulty gps after it was bouncing me all over hell. they sent back a fixed phone (in north america) with the gps working.. but the part they replaced also replaced the camera lens.. it scratched itself withing 1 day.. . i sent it back and they said it couldnt be fixed (only thnk i can figure is that all the replacement parts have faulty lens covers) and they sent me a new phone.. so far gps has been great (indoors 60-100 feet accuracy) whereas old one would jump up as high as 800 feet. and even the repaired one was only around 300..

the lens seems to be working find and not scratching.. hopefully maybe the redesigned stuff this has a much higher imei number.. or still made in china though.. or maybe they are just checking the known issues better in quality control before shipping out the phones.. i will keep you informed on how it progresses.. just removed most apps such as facebook, ap news, accuweather from phone and reinstalled from ovi store to get more memory.. also remcommend you get xplore or something and search the phone memory if i recall there was unbeliveably a video on the phone memory called somegthing like home screen that demoed the home screen .. totaly useless and it was about 2 meg.. in phone memory.. crazy..
