N97 is buggy .. too buggy

When trying to capture a video of me writing some stuff on a paper, the camera could not focus and all is blurred ... I tried it many many times, the camera never focuses correctly during a video.

The normal image mode is fine, but the video is not .

The phone is amazing IF and ONLY IF it was polished better ... The N97 was not ready when it had been released.

Choice is yours

The posts where people say they are ditching nokia for the iphone like it's some kind of threat always make me laugh.  Feel like saying other brands do exist!

Personally i'll never touch an iphone until apple drop it's control over apps.  I want to be able to choose where I get mine from and not have some higher power with the ability to disable apps at will hanging over me.  Also really need to be able to run more than one third party app at a time.  Nicely built phone with a lovely interface but to me that's all it's got going for it.

Good luck with whatever choice you make, be it N97, iphone, X6 or something else!  The SE satio looks nice but it's let down by a very lousy battery.

In vers simple words:  Don't Buy it.

For Detail: Go through the forum. You will really know why. NOKIA even doesn't care to address your problems. As if they address ur problem, thats mean they know that problem exist. They are just like.... no everything is going in best.

I lived in southern England from the early 90s until about three years ago. Every time there was a general election, loads of rich business moguls and celebrities used to go on record as saying that they'd quit the UK if Labour won. If people are really fed up with Nokia, then most will find better alternatives than the iPhone.

I wouldn't advise it. The N97 appears to have many problems in practice even though it does have many wonderful features to recommend it. There is a problem with its loudspeaker which no one appears to know how to resolve. When you use the loudspeaker, you can hear the callers but they hear you as if you're "breaking up." This is a standard problem with many of the phones and no one can confirm for certain whether any of the software updates has or will solve the problem.

I'm in a similar situation to you as I own an N958GB which I've used for two years without a single issue, except a minor problem where the phone forgets new words you teach it when writing texts and where it sometimes uses wrong choices for predictive even though you correct it. Irritating but hardly deal breaking. I'm looking to change my phone too but the N97 continues to be so problematic I've given two handsets I bought back.

Wait until the problems are sorted out or buy a new model that doesn't have as many issues.

I would definitely say yes.

I've had mine for 10 weeks now and unlike a lot of others here I don't seem to have had real problems but as previously said forums are generally biased towards the negative.

A couple of minor niggles which did not bother me but updating to v20 has sorted all out and now it feels like a really good, complete phone.

There's other uses for N97 than the obvious...

(Christmas tree decoration, Doorstop, soap holder in the bath (does the N97 float?), frisbee etc...)

Whether a product is good or bad must not be judged entirely on feature/usability but also on price.

The N97 sadly does not deserve its hefty price tag.

I was also hesitating whether to buy N97 or not. I borrowed my mates N97 for whole 24 hours and tried all options. Then discoverd that 5800 XM serves all my purpose and costs only half the money.

If you want to spend hours trying to figure out how Symbian internals work, then N97 will give you fun.

However, if you just want to use it as a phone and personal entertainment device without delving yourself into numerous forums, look elsewhere.

PS: Even if you buy 5800, you still need to be geek sometimes I started to believe that Symbian can be used successfully only by techno savvy folks. That's why iPhone is so successful - it just works with common public.

We don't like iPhone as we want more control on our phones.

Agreed, this has been the *only* reason I have not upgraded from N95 to iPhone, yet.  I don't like a crippled device, but Nokia crippled VoIP and the phone in general in the N97 anyway.

I am livid that Nokia in their infinite wisdom declined to release the N900 in the Australian market to prop up sales of the failing N97.

I'm just waiting until Q1 2010 for Android 2.0 phones to come out from the other players while Nokia keep shovelling over priced buggy Symbian junk down our throats.  And it is over-priced because all phones come from the same manufacturers nowdays anyway, so they differ only in profit margin.

Nokia even outsource R&D as cheaply as possible now.

I bought the Nokia N97 cos i was excited and it looked like it had great functions and stuff. but i was abit disappointed at the gps and camera issues and the old symbian os UI

im a nokia fan not HTC fan, The tocuh hd2 has an excellent processer but looking at its performance reviews it seems to be very similar to the x6 but the x6 has a better battery performance and camera performance

I really love my N97. I'll admit it has 2 undeniable flaws, camera lens scratch and small C memory, the first is a fixable physical problem, the second is not. However the work and research I've had to do to get my phone working to my satisfaction, I now look on as a benefit. Memory management has never been an issue for me before, but the more I read forum comments the more I realise N97 is not the only phone that runs short of memory, and in future I will leave as much free space on phone memory as possible on any phone I ever buy in the future, no point cluttering it up wjth things that don't 'have' to be there.

As for the daily use of my phone, I absolutely slaughter it every day, web based widgets running all day, web browsing whenever I get a moment free, check e-mail regulaly, watch videos for at least 30 mins a day whilst eating lunch, listen to music in the car through 3.5 lead ( over an hour per day), and have even bought a spare battery as it often 'dies before leaving for home (never had a phone with enough entertainment factor to make me use it to this extent before !) and just as a side issue it does make voice and video calls quite well and I send and recieve several txt per day. The phone has been a rollercoaster experience for me (but then I like amusement parks) and it is now a smooth and reliable multi media pocket computer that I never regret buying ( visit a forum for any phone you like, and try find one without a fault ! Try the same for cars, tv's camera's etc etc) I would recommend it. But if you expect perfection 'out of the box' don't buy anything new.

Hope you find a phone that does whatever you want it to do and that it gives you the minimum of problems and the maximum of smiles. I ignored the scaremongering about N97 and haven't regretted it, if you fancy Maemo, HTC, SE,Samsung or Macphone , give them a try. I'm happy with what I've got for the foreseeable future.

i will never buy another nokia after this experience.

my phone (the third one i've had due to waranty replacements) suffeers from countless bugs which makes it barely useable as a phone (it's core function).

it drops calls, break up, restarts, freezes, loses information, requires constant resetting/formatting. the music player is completely eradic, set aside a whole day to put on a large music collection and get all your music to show. the camera is useless unless your in a perfectly lit day. nigth time the photos are glazed by the flash, and the camera lens is scratched. the headphone socket has a poor connection and crackles with the slightest movement. the keyboard randomly stops working and requires a restart. nearly every phone call i (try to) make will result in 'connection error' or 'call failed' or even no error at all, the call will just 'dissapear'.

the false promises of skype, network printing, smooth screen transitions, are all lies.

but sure.. it LOOKS good. and when the phone works, it is good. but for me (with all 3 phones i've owned), it works less than 50% of the time.

i was one of those people that googled n97 for about 8 months before it was released. and now I have complained so much that my telco is actually in the process of cancelling my contract free of charge as my experience has been that bad.

as soon as I can get away from this phone the better, considering a motorola milestone. my days with nokia are done.

Only ignorant fools buy the Nokia N97, i have the N97 since day 1, so im an ignorant fool.

Be smart and wise, dont buy this faulty product, or any other new nokias, the e72 or e52 are suffering from major bugs as well, an messaging phone not connecting with mail server (e72) and a phone that has poor outbound quality (e52)...whats wrong with nokia?!...

Just buy another brand for now, Apple or HTC, these two brands are doing extremely well at this moment.

I work for o2 and i am very aware of the fact that the iphone 3gs has as many problems as the n97. Screen freeze problems with aplications hard resets etc its all the same as for htc the touch hd2 as i sais earlyer is too similar to the x6.. I just think im going to stick with my n96. After i have removed some software from it by ways which cannot be mentioned on here

I have an N95 which is gret when its working but its as buggy as hell.
