As the title says really - is there a way to do this?  Preferebly with a freeware product that allows you to view your messages on the PC as a text file.

You can use backup feature of PC suite to save SMS messages to PC

Or use Nokia's Ovi Suite 2.  You can even send text messages with it while the phone is connected.

Can I then open any messages saved using Ovi Suite 2 in something like Word, Notepad etc?

There are a couple of things you can do with the "Communication Centre" in PC Suite. Firstly, you could select all messages and copy/paste them onto a folder in your PC, they will be saved as individual files with the VMG extension. By default, these would be opened in a Communication Centre - I'm not sure what other software would open them.

You can also select all messages, then go to File>Export and the whole selection will be saved as a CSV file that can be opened in programs like Excel.

well i have the latest version of OVI suite and when i click on messaging, folders and messages i cannot copy them to pc. the only option is FORWARD, REPLY, DELETE...

My old nokia 6300 did allow copying smses directly to pc using drag and drop using the old nokia pc suite, but with nokia ovi suite and newer high model nokias its all Fed up and no longer user friendly...

Nokia has stuffed up badly with the N97...

I do not like getting backup of all data into a specific nokia image file...i like backing up my SMS messages only just like the old nokias, directly to pc by dragging & drop...

I guess its time to leave nokia forever and move into another brand phone...

I used nokia for 14 years and the more i see their newer phones the more disgusted i get with their feature, qualiity and performance...

My N97 has been replaced by warranty quiet a few times and still stuffed up, hanging and freezing...even with latest firmware its even worse...latest firmware is supposed to improve not get worse...what nokia programmers are doing and their engineers i dont really know...they going down and down and down...

Is there any solution with PC Suite for Nokia N8 especially for easier export SMS like before..??? 

Or any other third parties freeware to do this, pls tell us where it is...???

The current Beta version of Ovi Suite http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-ovi-suite-3-0 has the option to export all text messages as a .csv file.

Because its old and outdated. You can get the official version which is newer already.

Saving to csv file is available in current version of Nokia PC suite but not in OVI suite. You can go to edit and select all then go to export, choose the file name and click. All yr sms get very neetly saved in csv format.

Its available in Ovi Suite. I do it all the time. Just click file>export messages.
