Really important about Nokia n900 accelerometer!! (2)

First of all, hello to all the members of nokia team!

I'm Italian, so, sorry about my bad English!:robotvery-happy:

I'm really concerned about the function of the accelerometer in the new awesome Nokia N900...

As i have seen so far of this new nokia in internet articles etc, etc,it uses the "vertical mode" only for the phone function, so the rest of the amazing functions of this phone has to be used in "horizontal mode" as an internet tablet with both hands. :smileysad:

Personally I would feel really disappointed if after having created a machine so powerful, they had eliminated the practicality and comfort of the accelerometer, and the wonderful ability to rotate the screen 180 degrees(or more), according to convenience, and continue to exploit the maximum performance of Maemo 5 in the Nokia N900 in vertical mode.

TOTALLY AGREED WITH YOU MAN.

People have to be allowed to use the tablet in VERTICAL mode. Horizontal is stupid if you going to use it all the time. We want Virtual Keyboard. On Vertical mode.

I agree too, but there is already support for this.

Maemo v5 includes APIs that allow developers to make apps that use portrait (vertical) mode.  The phone application may be the only standard app that uses portrait mode, but you will find third party apps in the Ovi store that use it too, when the phone is releases, or shortly after.

All the current Maemo apps only use landscape (horizontal) mode, as the previous Nokia Maemo devices (N770, N800 and N810) internet devices, can only be used in landscape mode (and are not actually phones).

I really hope that somebody will make a dictaphone (voice recorder) app that can be used in portrait mode.  Apparently it is not that difficult for Symbian S60 apps to be recompiled for Maemo, and I have heard that it could be possible to run Android apps on the N900 in the future, if the Ubuntu developers (Ubuntu is built on Debian, like Maemo) add Android support for X11 (or something like that), so you can definitely expect quite a lot of apps that can be used in portrait mode.

I know this stuff from chatting to people on the #maemo channel on the Freenode IRC server.

The Nokia 7710 phone (from 2004) was landscape based.. only in the last firmware Nokia released did they support a portrait mode and that was only the dial pad.. and it wasn't automatic.. no accelerometer back in those days. It was fantastic to use, even with a stylus.. Although the N97 has a very slightly higher res screen than the 7710, you could easily fit more information on the 7710 screen. I didn't have stupidly large menu buttons occupying the bottom of the screen to eat into the display. The messaging app, for example, would show you the first full line of txt message in addition to the received date and the sender.. something the N97 still doesn't do..

Maemo was based upon Hildon which essentially comes from the 7710 which is probably why I get on so well with the previous 3 tablets. I personally can't wait to get back to a landscape device! For dialing numbers, fine.. but for everything else?! (personally) landscape ftw!

...I have in my Nokia N95 4gb, one of of those apps you're saying, called "Rotate-Me" made "By Samir". This, actually leads to maximum the function of that accelerometer, but in symbian s60 as software. so i can say that i know a little bit about this aditional downloadable application, but this "cellphone" is so new and innovative, with that amazing sowftare, that im concerned about how difficult can be for programmers(and that kind of people) create an application for Nokia N900

anyway thanks a lot for your answer...  :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Really important about Nokia n900 accelerometer!! (2)

Nokia have had 3 other tablets each running older versions of Maemo.. Developing for Maemo is very different to developing for every other phone platform.. But, and here's the thing, its actually fairly similar to the way Unix/Gnome desktop applications are developed. If you've developed for Gnome (and maybe KDE/QT) developing for Maemo should come fairly easily.

Nokia have been working for providing a development environment for Maemo like they have with S60 (see Carbide++) but I imagine it's going to be easier to develope for Maemo using a Unix/Linux machine than a windows machine.. If you run ubuntu on a desktop computer you'd have more in common with the N900 than you would with every other phone on the market!!

I've already written apps for my Maemo devices, so writing more using the new features in Maemo5/Fremantle will be fun and exciting!

have a look at www.maemo.org for more details on how to develope for Maemo..
