Re: Nokia N97 software update 2.0

Interesting update information. I'm not frustrated with all this wait, partly because I have a N97 that behaves fairly well (but only at times it misbehaves...). The other is that good software (as proposed) comes with patience, so I guess the only thing is to wait and give the Nokia guys enough time to thoroughly prepare it.

Re: Nokia N97 software update 2.0

Something logical just clicked...

Now I am going to let everybody know from the get go that this is pure speculation...

The n97 mini is officially launched on the 29th October (not just nokia store)... So that leads me to guesstimate the launch date of V20 to be the same day.

Re: Nokia N97 software update 2.0

@B9099 I do so hope you are not right about this as it means we will be getting a patched version of N97mini software rather than a proper re-write for the N97, probably not a good solution as it will still be full of bugs. have Nokia really abandonned the N97? Will it now become obsolete after 5 months with the N97mini taking its place in the rane. If so i'm of to ebay for an iPhone 3gs!

Re: Nokia N97 software update 2.0

@ the guy who said n97 mini is october 29th? aparantly in london it was released 23rd.. so day before yestarday and still no v20 for the nokia n97 so the mini n97 release date has nothing to do with the v20 nokia n97 unfortunatly

http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/332751/nokia_n97_mini_gets_official_release_date.html

btw how do you do quotes? it has no such thing in the options and typing quote with bracets does not work

Re: Nokia N97 software update 2.0

My wife just got an iPhone because she saw the struggle I was having with my N97 and did not want to go there.

So thats 1 customer lost Mr Nokia  because of the N97 experiment and if this promised software does not fix my list of issues at the end of this post you will get mine back as well.

The iPhone is not the greatest phone in the world and I would much prefer the N97 if it worked.

The iPhone is lacking in the hardware department these are the problems I have with it

1. No expansion slot (eeeh you say that cant be right but its true)

2. Cant take the battery out (no no that cant be true but it is - N97 users would be in a state of panic)

3. No Flash on the camera (its true I swear it)

4. No keyboard (every one knows that is true but, I need a keyboard)

5. Capacitive touch screen (you cant use a stylus but I havnt had to as yet)

6. The software works only one way (I find this restrictive)

The positives are

1. The software is supurb, it just works, everything is a dream to use and very mature

2. The screens layouts are supurb well thought out and mature.

3.  The hardware works i.e. the buttons feel right and you know what to expect when you press them

4. Its pleasing to the eye

5. The screen is much brighter then the N97 in daylight (I read this is due to the capacitive screen)

6. You can have the screen on for 2 minutes

7. Early days but the battery seems to last longer then the N97

8. It works supurbly as a phone (good speaker, voice dial works 99% of the time, Speakerphone works your callers can hear you clearly when its on)

9. Does not jam up every second day so you have to remove the battery to get it to go (just as well)

So in short its the ideal phone for my wife she does not want to play with software, her fingers are small enough to use it easily, she does not do a lot of typing so a keyboard is not required.

The big downer is no flash on the camera and its only a 3 Mpixles camera so you still need to take a camera everywhere with you if you want spontanious pictures. No good at all for me

But she LOVES it

Now the N97 first the good.

1. Great hardware it has everything FM transmitter, Keyboard, expansion slot, Great camera WITH a flash so you can actually use it as a camera.

2. I like the feel of it in the hand so I am saying its practical rather then eye pleasing.

3.  The flip is great as I can use it as a bedside clock

4. Keyboard (It has one which is good but as far as working see below)

Now the bad

1. The software OS is appalling. (Lets just leave it there - the list of wont/only just works is to long - my personal hate is in the web browser when you type in a remembered password and it opens OFF the screen)

2. It does not work as a phone (callers cant hear you when you switch on speakerphone and the voice dialler must speak another language as its only 40% accurate at best)

3. Infuriating lock ups that you have to remove the battery to fix.

4. Poor button control (I never know what to press to switch it on if I press the keygaurd I lock it if I press the silver button it says use the keygaurd

5. Speaker volume could be better

6. The new maps dont have the whole country if I scroll to somewhere new there are no streets till I go online and they download (that is just unacceptable)

7. The accelerometer needs acceleration as its either slow or doesnt work at all (I am continually slapping the phone to change aspects)

8. Keybord software is stupid (whoever thought number lock or key repeat on hold down was a good idea on a phone should be immeadiatly executed)

9. When I take flash pictures I get a flare that whites out half the picture (It has a flash that cant be used)

10. GPS has 7 satellites one second and none the next  its always saying "No GPS signal" (In fact I ask for the view location map rather then drive to and use a paper map if I am not sure how to get there)

11. I will leave it there. The list goes on but I am getting depressed.

And at the moment I HATE it. (But am willing to give it one more go)

So Mr Nokia heres the deal.

1. Make the speakerphone work so my callers can hear what I am saying

2. Make the voice dial 90% accurate

3. I want the whole country in my maps not have to download the bit I want to see

4. Make the GPS usable

or my N97 will be making a non return flight back to Finland

Think I am being rude, should be more patient prehaps, Well NO I AM NOT as I already have a Nokia phone that does all the above perfectly its called an N95 and its now 3 years old.

Re: Nokia N97 software update 2.0

Hi I'm glad to hear your phone is doing ok

i'm letting off steam as i am sick of nokia the company dont know how to communicate! with unhappy customers if you read through this forum or any where on the internet you will find all sorts of horror stories regarding the n97.

nokia wont even comment or inform us of anything regarding firmware/updates we are left wasting most of our time looking for any new info on sorting the dodgy handset set out (n97

Never will i buy from nokia again !!!! not surprised they are losing money "Put your customers first" does that ring a bell !

Hi Psychomania, i did start a new thread with my product code as you recommended, it's entitled "N97 touchscreen was intremittent, then stopped working altogether..." I spelt intermittent wrong, anyway it's got some useful info in there and tells a bit of sad story.

Best wishes mate, 1cebleyes ( Richard Jackson UK )

I will never buy any nokia product!! BECAUSE YOU, NOKIA, DON'T CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS! You're looking ONLY 4 money! So.. I think that v20 fW is your LAST CHANCE!!! If after that FW our phones wouldn't work PERFECTLY, YOU WILL CRASH!!! I SWEAR THAT YOU WILL LOOSE ALL YOUR MONEY!!! AND APPLE CAN NOT HELP YOU ANYMORE!!!

So guys, i fully agreed with you. I usED in my life ONLY NOKIA phones... But after N97... I changed my mind.. I HATE YOU NOKIA!!!
