Hello everyone,

Last weekend, as I opened the back camera lens cover, I saw one straight line scratch

I was cursing myself, even though I keep my phone in a pouch. But today as I was scrolling through HOFO, I came accross a thread where people we complaining about similiar issues.

I think this is a defective design problem on N97s, if there are some dust particles under the screen then they will scratch the screen when you slide the cover to open or close it.

Will nokia take resposiblility to fix these screens, I am really **bleep** off. I have been a Nokia fan from last 7 years.

This is what we get after spending $650 USD to buy a hyped flagship device.

Could anyone tell me who to complain and how get it fixed.

call nokia care line and talk to them you do have 30 days to return/exchange your unit right? you can also use the 'contact us' button to share the issue.

ive seen this also on my n97, but I dont see how can it damage the image quality of the camera since the scracth is right in between the sensor and the flash. but what a drag anyways

well aftear reading the hofo i just smacked a screen protector in the lens, i got it from the "home button" of some iphone's screen protectors I had. as soon as I slided the cover close/open the lens (or the screen protector) got scratched so Im 100% sure that the sliding cover will scratch the lens. Not that fast, since the screen protector adds some bulk on the surface. So if you are going to do this make sure that the screen protector doesnt invade the flash zone or you will get some flashes over the picture and also make sure that it doesnt get under the lens frame I think the cover has a slider under the frame.

So finally I feel better, and the picture quality doesnt change anything even when using the flash!

My nokia N97 is only 1 week of use and is also a little beam of the camera lens, it seems to me that this problem does not affect the quality of the photos, but it is a design error for Nokia, as many more has happened?

I live in Toronto, Canada and I got the phone sealed in a box from SN Traders (reseller), do you think I will be covered under warranty (purchased on Jun.23, 2009) ?? 

Plus can anyone update whether nokia is going to cover the shipping charges for this manufacturer's defect??
I will try calling the customer service too!

I agree. For this kind of cash it sure is a major let down. I don't like this device too much despite being a major Nokia user. Mine scratched up the first week using it on vacation. It sat in the case most of the time minus a few times to take pictures at the San Diego Sea World and Wild Animal Kingdom. I noticed it right away. I had to get some compressed air and blow out the debris but, the damage was already done.

this must be definetly a design error. i would contact nokia care and make a complaint so they fix this issue.

Does this affect the image quality though?

i havent seen the quality affected but keep in mind that my scratches are in between the led and the focus lens and there some others just around the focus point, not in the middle. Still havent affected the quality with flash or without it.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.  Can you get a Macro photo showing this/these scratch/es?

Are you sure its a scratch, and not a fine rub mark?  From what I understand, there is a blue coloured cleaner fitted to the underside of the main camera's slider cover.  This is supposed to prevent scratches, not cause them.

Photos would be appreciated.

There's a scratch on mine and I haven't been anywhere with a lot of debris. Its to the side of the camera lens though not where I can see it when I take photos. But I didn't pay this money so the product will damage itself -__-

I have the same problem. N97 USA - Made in China. The scratch is right bewteen flash and lens.

Are you sure you guys are not mistaking the recess of the dual led placement as a scratch?  If you look, and feel where the dual leds are, they are not underneath the glas which protects the main camera lens, but are actually recessed, and are placed in a cut out of the glass.  See image below..

This is very true. There are slowly scratches emerging between the LED and the camera opening. I hope it dosent go on the camera lense. This is a serious mistake of Nokia and a disagrace to Nokia's quality. They should replace all our back covers. .. Very shameful product in market without testing.

Please help us to help you, and take some high quality macro photos if possible showing the extent of the damaged/scratches.
