Re: Nokia N96 First Impressions - Everything I love and hate.

The name N96 is misleading

It makes you believe this phone is better than the N95
But the old N95 is much better

I still continue and prefer to use my old N95

The N96 is a bad phone. Everything is cheap, cheap plastic case, cheap performances, everything is cheap except the price

You guys are mad or really unlucky. This phone is better than my gf's N95-1: faster texting, easier to press buttons, no crackle in the speakers, more responsive when media's playing, better sat nav. If this isn't true for you, take it back and demand another one -- mine's that good!

Oh, and it's much better than the N73 I had.

Re: Nokia N96 First Impressions - Everything I love and hate.

Hi. Hey aaronmc, I currently have a Nokia N95 8Gb on 3UK. Generally it's a great phone. GPS does work pretty well, battery life is ok as long as no life-sucking apps are used

I also have a N96 on the way next week. Financially I suppose selling the N96 is the best option, but I'll be tempted to keep it and sell the N95 8Gb, but first I need to be sure it will be good enough for me.

For primary concerns will be
- Does the improved efficiency pay off now that there's a smaller battery
- Can I leave it connected to wifi all (working) day
- can I get SIP internet calls working (I think Nokia removed the internet tel app, but maybe gizom/truphone will be fine)
- does the video work without any stuttering (which I sometimes see on 95)
- will the phone be as responsive as the 95 given the slower processor
- Key useage pattern: SIP, web browsing, poor 3g signal, wifi (eap-tls), gmail

As of today, i've also gone through 3 phones and all have the same problem! Also, looking at another website's comments on what exactly is in the firmware upgrade the problem I have, which is with the music player constantly searching for tracks and finds 0, isn't even listed as a fix! I think i'm going to return this handset and stick with my 95 as well. I might look at the 85 or even further down the field the upcoming 5800. Nokia...this N96 is a total disaster and there are pages of complaints here to prove it!

To Michaels,

how can you possibly say that information is confidential if it's already out there on the internet???? That is totally bizarre.

Anyway, since my last post, i've handed my phone back. The N96 is by far the worst nokia nseries handset unleashed on keen nokia fans. I am completely disappointed with the fact that the phone companies corrupted the handset with their tripe and couldn't be bothered to release firmware upgrades for it. I do concede it's not something nokia is responsible for, but the phone companies as only unlocked n96 users have given praise to this handset, coincidentally what people are recommending you do (buy it unlocked). This is my opinion. Vodafone, very disappointed with them too rolling out this handset with known vodafone programming bugs and i hope when vodafone get hold of the next upcoming nokia products, they get their silly acts together and releases upgrades as soon as bugs are reported.

Re: Nokia N96 First Impressions - Everything I love and hate.

I bought N96 on Nov-2008. The set is very BAD in all aspects. From Jan-2009 onwards, it started switching OFF automatically, sometimes while on the call. It is going OFF very often. In the span of 3 months, the mobile has already visited the Nokia care center twice, but the issue is not solved. The worst thing is that the nokia care center people return the mobile without even checking whether the issue is solved or not. Right now the mobile is not usable. Nokia people should take this issue serious and replace the mobile as it is purchased just 3 months back, or update the buggy firmware.

Did you get your N96 SIM-free or did it come from a network operator? If the latter, that probably explains it because network operators have a habit of messing up otherwise perfectly good N96 handsets with their customised firmware.

Which firmware version are you using? If 10.065 you really want to update it because that firmware was pretty much unusable. V11.018 came out a couple of weeks after the phone was released and corrected many bugs. V11.101 was a minor update from that, and on Dec. 8th V12.043 was released. V12 turns the N96 into an exceptional handset.

Quite topical for this thread, I wrote an initial "first impressions of the N96" article a while back, only a day or two after I took delivery of my handset:

In December I did a more complete write-up:

Re: Nokia N96 First Impressions - Everything I love and hate.

Hi n,

Thanks for your comments. I did not get N96 SIM free. I am using it from my old Nokia mobile. However after seeing your commetns, I switched on my mobile in offline mode (without SIM). To my surprise, it was not switching OFF for more than 12 hours. However in India, Airtel is the leading network provider and all high end mobiles are supported by them. Most of friends use airtel in their high end mobiles. I too used airtel SIM (which was switched from my old Nokia mobile) since I purchased the mobile and it was working fine until Jan-2009. So, with this information I think I can conclude that the problem may not be with the network provider but the N96.

I have submitted my mobile to Nokia care center. Let me see what they are going to do.

- Robert.

Re: Nokia N96 First Impressions - Everything I love and hate.

I love my N96..i bought it on nov-08 and sometimes it froze or restart after i listen mp3 for an hour or it became so slow on doing anything but problem kinda solved when i restart it. just figure my phone need a break..

the only problem still bothering me is that  the core media player doesnt work perfectly in my phone so i still watch an .mp4 format and not an .avi format..

thats all i can share.. my N96  is V12 firmware.. and i convert fromE90 to N96..
