Nokia N95 won't pick up wifi when in offline mode. It only picks it up when i sim card is in it. Even if the sim card is inactive.

I found with mine when I put the phone into the Offline profile and selected the web function it prompted me whether I wanted to activate a data connection (inc WiFi) whilst the phone was Offline. It has only asked me once when I 1st got the phone and tried the above steps.

It does ask me that but it wont pick up my home network only my neighbours for some reason. Weird

My wifi still work in offline mode. N95 will ask for my confirmation. My SIP (Internet) phone will also work. Only cellular coverage is turned off.

Mine just picks up someone else's wireless network but not my own. Its very strange.

No my network is not set to hidden because my laptop and desktop can find it and when i put a sim card in it, it finds my network straight away.

Your wifi could be set to hidden but all computers and laptops previously connected/paired will still find it. I think it is worth checking settings to make sure SSID is not set to hidden.

Its not set to hidden. I think it has to do with orange branding software. The Nokia technical guy i spoke to said orange branding was poor.

Wi Fi shouldnt work in offline mode as far as I know, otherwise it would defeat the object of offline mode ?, I thought the idea was so you could have your phone on in a plane without breaking any laws by your phone blasting radio waves of any sort by putting it into offline mode.

It should work in offline mode. Offline mode means no sim or phone calls. The wifi has nothing to do with the sim and phone calls. Lots of people told me theirs work in offline mode. I think its the orange branding.

YES THATS THE WHOLE POINT

OFF LINE means Off line

It will NOT connect wifi
it will not connect BT
it will Not connect GSM or 3g all 3 TRANSMIT RADIO SIGNALS

IT is Ilegal to TRANSMIT on board an aircraft in flight
there fore the off line is desinged to be able to use the PDA MP3 MP4 functions of the phone while complying with the LAW
IF you have any of these 3 functions in OFF LINE there is a problem as they all transmit radio waves

You can select OFF LINE with the profiles or by removing the sim

you must select OFF LINE in the profile before you power off the phone ( required for take off) when you repower the phone above around 11000 ft Usualy when seat belt light goes off it should still be OFF LINE

IF YOU have NOT selected OFF LINE DO NOT POWER on the phone unless the sim is OUT
You CAN NOT power on the phone THEN SELECT OFF LINE as it will transmit its ID You could be arrested if there is a txt or call waiting it will pick it up

THERE IS AN EXCEPTION I FORGOT

IF you have it in OFF LINE and go to web browser it will ask if you want to connect wlan in off line mode IF you select YES the WLAN will work in OFF LINE
But By default it is turned OFF
IF you have changed this to WLAN on in Offline DO NOT USE ON AN AIRCRAFT IN FLIGHT

I guess you aren't talking about your brain... This thread is about "WiFi in offline mode", NOT USING YOUR PHONE ON A PLANE (note, I won't use caps again). So when you go on about "this being the whole point" you have completely misunderstood the issue.

Back to the core of the thread. I am having difficulty using WiFi when my phone is in offline mode. I can connect to my WiFi at home (WEP), but not in the office (open, no security). At work, I have no trouble connecting my laptop to the open WiFi network.

The error message I get is "Unable to use network, phone is currently in offline mode". I don't see how this is relevant, as I am trying to connect via WiFi. My connection steps are 1. click on the wifi icon on the standby screen, 2. click start web browsing.
