Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

[IMG]http://www.cnet.com.au/cnet/i/r/2006/mobilephones/22130769/sc003.jpg[/IMG]

Hi

Ive been searching everywhere including Nokia for info and was pointed to this forum! ->

Does anyone know any specifics regarding the nokia N95's Sound Quality??

Specifically:

1. The DAC used in the N95 build?
2. The SQ Differences between the N95 and N91 (build and technical)?
3. The sort of amplification used in the N95?
4. How the amplification (if any) runs through the 3.5mm jack?
5. A comparison to the SQ of a staple player e.g IPOD?
6. Is there a possibility for lineout? (purely a query)

Any help here would be most appreciated !!

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

ok so through a listeining test the n91 performs better..not surprising. What about the technical specifications of the n91 vs the n95? Are you aware of the differences? besides the memory?

Hi - when you say "better"
do you mean "superior audio quality"
does it have more volume?

thanks

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

Here is the official Nseries specs bout music:
Music Features
• Digital music player - supports MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+/WMA/M4A with playlists and equalizer.
• Integrated handsfree speaker
• OMA DRM 2.0 support for music
• Stereo FM radio (87.5-108MHz /76-90MHz) with Visual Radio support

And I also learnt it has 8 band equalizer.N91 has a special music chip [forgotten who has made it] that was created to beat specially IPOD.Now IPOD has been redesigned but sound still sucks:smileyhappy:.
Already iREAVER, ZEN has beaten ipod.
I saw a tendency that whoever own this model barely [includin me] support this as best.
But its only upto nokia to keep it still best even after N95 released or not.
Instead can make another model over or as successor.
Plus, I donk think so mainly because y know HDD expansion is easier than SD MMC systems.
And play videos and songs better.
I am sorry that I could not give y a more depth technical feature.
But the fact is IT IS A MUSIC CHEAP ON WHICH LEADIN MUSIC COMPANIES GREATLY RELY ON.
And for nokia it is not impossible to make slightly inferior or superior to N91 Like sound machine and eventually all [music] phone will have this GOOD sound quality as standard....just a thought.
Hope y understand wat I mean:smileyhappy:.

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

the n91 is nokia's music phone...dedicated music phone...
my comparison with the n91 vs. the n95 revealed that sound qualitiy is similar
the n91 does edge out the n95 but to me not by much....
the n91 is a bit louder
through the headset however both phones performed superb
quality wise
you would be happy with either music player.....

Hi if you want to find more information I suggest you search in the FCC website.

You should be able to find pictures of the board of every phone there.

So you could find out (if you know your Asics) the audio DAC that the N91 uses, also for the N95.

Or go to GSM Arena or some other discussion forums where people like to dissassemble their phones and talk about the innards.

EDIT:

Like I said in another thread, what does it matter how the circuits are connectd inside. All you need to know is which one sounds better and for that I have the greatest test equipment for that. I.e. My ears!

Ha ha ha !el_loco:infact everyone of us has that "best equipments".
Problem is not everyone does not have the N95 to test wid it til now.
That's why they may need to know more information.
BTW:Can y please name the FCC websites specifically?

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

I don't know how to post the link but look at some of the blogs like RingNokia. and you might find a link there.

On the comment about the N95. It's OUT!, so you can go ahead and compare the N91 8GB and N95 head to head in the store or in your home :smileyhappy:

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

The N91 has an external DAC. (i.e. external to the processor)

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

Generally, at least in top end audio, external DACs are generally much higher quality components, and are invariably much better sounding. You also gain improvements from a relative lack of cross talk from separating the transport mechanism and the encoding sections (ie. the DAC).

However, in the case of a mobile, you won't gain much by separating out the components, due to everything be crammed in so darned close.

You'll gain more by having higher quality headphone amplification, but thats one area where (most) mobile devices are lacking, in that they don't have the power to get a decent signal out.

The iPods sound is okay for most people, but its generally lacking in any real "oomph". Sure, it can come out with bass, but without any real weight. The same criticism can be raised against the majority of mobiles, or even the various walkmans around.

From experience, Sony (not Sony Ericsson!) are one of the few to get it right. My (very old) WM-D6C Pro Walkman had one of the best headphone stages of any mobile music device. And I'd say that my venerable Sony NetMD player had a fairly decent headphone amp as well.

I'd love to check out the N95 on sound quality, but I really, really doubt it will come anywhere near to my old Sony kit on sound quality.

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

Been too busy outside to get here that much of late.

I'd expect the N95 to improve the sound quality over the N91, but don't quote me.

I need to get back in touch with a mate, he's got an N91, I'd like to check out its sound quality, maybe see if he'll let me stick it through my homebrew amp and electrostatic headphones, just to see how close it gets to the music.

Re: Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

The N91 will be superior to N95 in audio quality. Unless Nokia release a Firmware upgrade for N95 supporting Same audio quality as N91.

However wen N81 launches it will be the best audio device dan N91. The person at nokia launching the N81 said that N81 & N81 8GB will have exact same sound capability's as N91 & the N81/N81 8GB will use 5 Band Equalizer rather dan 8 Band Equalizer which N91 uses. N81/N81 8GB is a Multimedia phone for Music/Gaming.

Sorry mate, it aint possible via FW upgrade. But it might be possible to N95 8GB if they make any hardware changes:smileywink:

To --> korngear

Remember wen u said A2DP bluetooth will never be supported by firmware upgrade lol & i kept saying it can be done via firmware upgrade well da answer is der N73 got firmware update wid A2DP support.

Anything is possible with firmware upgrade, they can upgrade the n95 firmware so its sound be's louder n clearer like n91.
