Nokia N900 Backup Files

I have a backup from my Nokia N97 on my MicroSd Card, are these backup files compatible with the new Nokia N900 to make a restore?

Thanks

Re: Nokia N900 Backup Files

No those backups will not work on the N900 due to both phones having completely different operating systems.  The on device backup program on the N97 will only restore back to other S60v5 devices, not maemo.

Re: Nokia N900 Backup Files

So what I can do? This is my situation.

I'm About to sell my N97 and I don't want to lose the Text Messages I receive on my phone, My contacts are already backed up on Outlook I can easily enter manually if necessary, but I'm worry about my text messages ! How I can save them and then transfer it to the new N900.

I can't wait for the phone to be released on the USA because I have the opportunity right now to sale my **bleep** N97.

Any suggestions will be really appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Nokia N900 Backup Files

Google around for apps that will allow you to export your SMS messages in common formats.  There's a possibility that apps may exist to import them back to a maemo device.  You could export them using ovi suite or PC suite and hope that they can be exported back to the N900, I do not know if that will work though again because of the OS.

Thats my only suggestions if you are selling the N97 before getting the N900.

Re: Nokia N900 Backup Files

I was lead to believe that the ovi suite software "supported" the N900.. I would've thought that would allow messages, contacts, calendar, notes etc to be synced back onto the device.. I'm rather hoping so as I've pre-ordered one!

There is also a chance that the device may support syncing between handsets.. When I upgraded to my N97, I synced directly from my E90 (S60-3rd) and it copied messages, cal, etc.. It is possible a sync client is on the N900 so you could sync directly.. the down side with this of course is that you'd probably still need the handset whilst you have the N900..

Have a look on talk.maemo.org

There are a number of people who were given N900s by Nokia for testing, reviewing etc.. It is possible someone there may have more experience with that kind of thing..

As Psycho said, there may be apps to export the messages on your handset.. but there isn't likely to be such an import tool for the N900 yet.. however, the data store is fairly well documented so it mightn't be too hard to write one, if you're technically minded.. but I'd seriously leave that as a last resort :smileyhappy:

Re: Nokia N900 Backup Files

okies.. this is promising..

The user guide for the N900 has been about for a little while..

http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/g...N900_UG_en.pdf

Check out around page 80...

"Synchronise and transfer content from another device"

Synchronise with a compatible device for the first time If you want to synchronise using Nokia PC Suite, you need to start the synchronisation from the PC. Otherwise, do the following:

It only specifically mentions calendar entries.. but it doesn't say that is ALL it does.. I suspect it will sync messages too.. BUT there is a problem. The N900 does NOT support MMS messages at the moment, so the message store may be incompatible.. so no message sync is possible..

That is a down side..

Interestingly, it mentions that you can "backup and restore" text messages amongst other things.. in the next section.. but nowhere does it mention syncing messages..

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=32651&highlight=text+messages&page=2

Doesn't look good:

Basic PC Suite support is there, calendar and contacts. SMS, MMS, Bookmars, File syncing is not supported currently."

**bleep**

Re: Nokia N900 Backup Files

Another option would be to sync with Ovi online.  Your N97 can do it wirelessly and it can be set up via the Ovi site.  I have backed up my text messages like this in the past and it does work.  Just make sure you choose to sync messages when you set up the Sync profile on your phone.  From what I can gather here: http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N900/ under the "Other" category, the N900 also supports SyncML, which is what the Ovi site uses.  Granted, the N900 can only do it via USB or Bluetooth, but I don't see a reason that it would prevent you from restoring your contacts, calendar, and messages from the site to your new N900.  Use the txt file as a secondary method, but SyncML via the Ovi site should do what you're looking for, unless I'm mistaken.

Re: Nokia N900 Backup Files

nsxman99 than you for the advise, but at this point the only choice is export it as txt file, ovi.com does not support sync msm , only contacts, and calendar.

Great forum !!!
