Nokia N85, support request, some very annoying usability issues:

I have been using a nokia n85, and although the phone itself is very promising, it has some very annoying usability issues, I believe It is due to software issues. I do not if it is due to the model I am using, an application I have installed, or is it a general issue. Please comment if you experience similar problems:

1) Reception: Sometimes in a very well covered area, the telephone enters in 3G mode, the signal drops to zero, and unless I reset the phone manually, no call can be received/made. After reset, the phone connects normally (without 3G icon).

2) SMS composer: Sometimes I write a message, and I get error "Message writer already in use" and the message is lost when I exit the editor (save to drafts do not work). Completely random but common in my experience and especially  annoying in the case of a lengthy message.

3) Charging issues: The wall charger  is not recognized, I plug it in and out a couple of times until it is recognised. Sometimes I get the error "unable to turn of power save mode". When the battery is depleted, the hardware time is lost, I have to reset the clocks date&time.

 4) Double click: When any power saving mode is initiated (including dimming the screen) I have to press a button twice to make it recognised.

5) Telephone is generally unresponsive, some examples:

 a) when I want to stop music playing by pressing the hardware "stop" button on the upper slide row of buttons, I have to press it several times before phone realises that I am pressing the button and stops the music. The wait is sometimes in the order of couple of seconds and it  is very annoying.

  b) when refresing the screen (and this is done more than often) there is a noticible delay until the screen is drawn. Nothing can be done until the screen is refreshed.

No background applications are shown in task manager apart from music player, standby and menu.

6) Music player: When skipping through tracks, after a few times, the player freezes, and the phone is unusable until I plug out the headphones, and plug it in again.

 7) Unable to remove annoying "search" and "share online" tabs in main screen without sacrificing the shortcuts.

8) Feature request: When refreshing music library is it possible to exclude some directories? (ringtones etc)

9) GPS never locks in when walking, you have to stand in one place for 10-15 minutes...

I am using 11.047/11.048 software. My phone is bought from Turkey, and is set in Turkish, however I am using it in Italy in the TIM network for the time being.

Re: Nokia N85, support request, some very annoying usability issues:

a lot of the problems you report are no doubt attributed to the immature firmware that the N85 device has (11.047/8). due to the recent wave of firmware updates for similar Feature Pack devices such as the N81, N78, N96 and even 5800, there is reason to believe that a firmware update for N85 should arrive in the next few months. please be patient my friend and a lot of the phone issues will be resolved. it was an anxious and frustrating wait for my N78 to be updated from v12 to v20 then v21, waiting in the order of six months, but the wait was well worth it :smileyhappy:

Re: Nokia N85, support request, some very annoying usability issues:

I have this phone, and I have had it for a week. It has the latest firmware.

I have not had the reception problem (mine's on Orange, UK), nor the SMS error you report.

My wall charger was not recognised. I informed Orange of this, and they sent a replacement package - phone, charger, manual, earphones, everything, the next day. The new charger worked from the new package. I have no issues with UB, car charging or mains.

You issue at number 5 occurs with mine, but only when watching a sizeable video. Otherwise, all is well - especially with the music player. Your issue 5b does occurs, however.

Your 6 is not an issue here.

I agree that your number 7 issue is a PITA.

I have not tested your issue 9

Re: Nokia N85, support request, some very annoying usability issues:

Agree with you 100% on the need for a better firmware on the device. It's weird having what should be such a top end device, with an interface that seems tacked together, badly thought out, little customizability and plenty of bugs that aren't fixed yet.

In response to no. 2, i suggest copying the message before you quit the editor, then paste it back in when replying again. Still annoying but at least u don't have to type out the whole message again.

3) i had some charging errors when i was using the 3rd party charger the shop provided me with. I switched to the one in the box and used a converter for the foreign plug and everything was fine after that.

4) this is because the screen dims very quickly when in power save mode (after a couple of seconds). You don't notice it so much because the dimming is not such a big change as when its not in PS mode.

7) yeah i wish the phone was more customizable. There are many layout things i would want to change.

8) agree, so annoying they all show together in music and ringtones.

9) I don't have any problems with GPS, seems to work quite quickly unless i'm driving then in might take 30-60 seconds.
