Nokia N82 memory card problem

Hi all. Ok about a week back I was using my camera extensively at a car expo taking loads of pictures. At that expo, my camera started freezing and giving me a black screen. Sometimes it would give me a black screen and then after moving away from what I wanted to capture, it would flash and take the picture. It seemed to be normal until today when I wanted to install a third party application. It completely freezes at the menu and eventually moves but freezes if any other menu is opened. I have done some power downs and ups but the problem persists. I removed the memory card and the phone works as normal with no freezing. What could be the problem?

Looks like there could be a problem with the memory card. You could try reformatting it and see it that works. Otherwise you may need a replacement card.

Be sure to back up what you want to keep before formatting.

Copy should be faster as long as you don't have any hidden files or application installed on your memory card.

Re: Nokia N82 memory card problem

I only had some third party apps, about 3 on the memory card. Will they all be terminated if I format?

If the apps are on the card then they will disappear with the format.

For future reference it's always better to install apps and themes into the phones memory. This helps to keep the phone running quickly and more reliably, especially with larger cards.

Is the card you are having trouble with the nokia 2GB card thats included with the phone? If so there's been quite a few reports that there's a bad batch out there.

Re: Nokia N82 memory card problem

Ok, will the apps that came along with the phone also be removed? I have four apps that I put on myself, an IM, ebuddy, Opera Mini and Internet Radio. All on memory card so I can assume they will be taken out. Yes my memory card is the one that came along with the phone, the 2GB MicroSD.

Applications that are embeded in the phone firmware should be unaffected.

You will lose all applications installed on the memory

The apps that are on the phone will be safe. You can test this out by removing the card.

If you use nokia maps you will need to reinstall your maps as these will also be lost in the format.

If the problem happens again you may want to consider buying a new card or contact nokia about the card if you are within the first 6 months of your warranty. It's probably just easier to buy a new card now that they are so cheap.

Re: Nokia N82 memory card problem

Ok thanks. I tried this, I updated my IM program today so I removed it and the phone works perfectly, or at least back to normal. So it seems that was the problem. However, I'm still wondering if I should get my MicroSD card replaced especially if there have been reports of malfunctions. Also, does the N82 have a power saver feature? Oh yes, any idea's as to why my camera was freezing as stated in first post? Lastly, I'm a little hesitant to upgrade my firmware, is there anything that could go wrong?

Re: Nokia N82 memory card problem

I wouldn't consider changing the microSD just because there have been reports of malfunctions. Replace only if necessary. The important thing is to backup regularly.

The N82 does not have a pawer saver function but you can extend battery live by doing the following.

There are a few steps you can take to enable you to squeeze a little more standby time from your battery. These include:

1. Switch the phone from Dual Mode to GSM only
2. Turn off bluetooth when not required
3. Turn off Wlan scanning when not required
4. Reduce the backlight power saver time
5. Reduce backlight brightness
6. Exit any applications when not in use

The freezing camera could be due to a memory card problem.

The decision up update firmware is a personal call. I would advice someone to only update if they are having an issue with the phone because there are inherent risks associasted with updating. Personally, I always update.

The N82 has always been pretty reliable during firmware updates. Just make sure your PC is running well, fully up to date and you close all programs that run in the background.

It doesn't have a power saver where the screen totally blanks like it does on some other models.

The camera issue could have been caused by the apps installed on the memory card. Just see how it goes and make sure you install all apps and themes to phone memory.

It's entirely up to you about getting the card replaced. It's probably less hassle just to buy a new one. 8GB cards are nice and cheap now. I paid £18 for a sandisk a few months ago from play.com.
