Nokia N80 white screen

Hi

I'm having a problem with my N80. I got it about 3 weeks back and it had been working normally and I was very happy with it. One morning after sliding the phone open & then closed, the screen became white and has stayed like that. If i take out the battery for a couple of hours, it returns to normal. I am sure that this is a software issue. I've tried the soft reset and the format...nothing works. I also haven't installed any 3rd party software so that can't be the reason.

I've noticed that the screen goes white once the phone is in sleep mode. I switched sleep mode off, but i would like to have it on, because the battery lasts even less than before with it off.

can anyone help?

Oh and i check the software update every day for a N80 Firmware upgrade. But....nothing yet....Nokia has the N91 Firmware out but not the N80...

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

Have you tried hard reset? Switch off the phone and hold the following buttons down together, then press the power button and keep ALL of the buttons held down until it's definitely switched on - you can tell if it's worked successfully as you will see the screen asking you to choose your location, as with soft reset.

The buttons are asterix, green call key and 3, the handset on and keep all buttons held down.

Never done this on an N80, mind. ^-^

Hi,

I've tried that one already, it did nothing.

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

So it's the handset going into sleep mode that's prompting the screen to go white? Dunno, mate. Turn sleep mode off for now and wait for the N80 to appear on Software Update - the N91 is up there, it can't be too long now.

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

yip..thats right, i noticed this because, once the white screen appeared, i would take the battery out and leave it like that for a couple of hours, then once i replace battery, set time etc.. the phone would work fine...that is until the phone goes into screensaver mode, and then sleep mode. and once the phone is in sleep mode if you slide the phone up, the screen would turn white...and so i would have to start the whole process again. So next time it happened, I turned sleep mode off and made screen saver time 30mins or so. this sorted my problem out.

But even now, when I slide the phone up, momentarily the screen turns white and then normal again. So its not entirly working 100%.

I can't wait for this new firmware. N80 firmware better be next in line on that software update page!! otherwise i'm going to lose it. And its not like I can take it to a Service centre here in South Africa, I'm told that they don't have V4 yet. All they would do is reinstall V3.

So i'm stuck, with a really expensive phone that doesn't work 100%

*sigh*

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

It might be the battery - has anybody you know got one you can swap battery with to test it?

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

Nope...not many people are fortunate enough to have an N80.

Why do you think its the battery? Not enough voltage going through, to bring it out of sleep mode??

Oh BTW i get about 2 days battery life.

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

I don't know the technical reason why it might be the battery, but it's worth a try. :smileytongue: Sleep mode shuts the handset down like a computer - maybe in trying to communicate with the battery it's failing in some way and causing it to white screen?

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

Hi everyone,

This is just a general tip for N80 users and Series 60 Phones.
Many devices running OS like computers and phones, usually "freezes" or "crashes" because it has run out of system cache. You can end all applications that you are not using, which will free the system cache. The following will work on all Series 60 phones.

1. Press and hold the menu button. This will bring up the applications running dialogue window.
2. Highlight the application you are not using and press "c" to end it.

I have found this very useful, as everything runs smoothly once a end an application Im not currently using.
Please note though, do not end the "Standby" application as it is your phone. Ending that application will switch the phone off.

Hope this helps.

You can't end the Standby anyway. Not on mine anyway. Couldn't on the 6630 or 6600 either.
Is that an N95 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?!?

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

Yeah....I also used to keep my all my applications closed, because if you just think about it from a computer related view, it would take up more memory. So to reduce that I only had standby and F-Secure running "minimised" this still caused my nokia to white screen. Mind you the phone worked with no problems when the screen was white, I just couldn't see anything.
I got myself a 1Gb Kingston SD card...and I have something like 800MB free on it, but i still get that white screen issue once in a while.

I just want that V4 update so badly.....

-I think i should name this issue the white screen of death.

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

Hi,

Yes you're right there taffytafftaf.
Most of the early Series 60 phones, will not allow you to end the "Standby" application.
You certainly can on the Nseries and prossibly Eseries.

I think its because these models were designed to seamlessly toggle between "offline" mode and "online" mode (switching the phone off but not the device).

Cheers

So how do you do it then? I have tried pressing C on it and it does nothing. What is it supposed to do?

Re: Nokia N80 white screen

Hi,

To switch to offline mode, you need to press the "on/off" button, scroll to offline and select.

If you haveent got that option, your phone does not support that feature.

Cheers.
