My Nokia N8 does not seem to be able to do DTMF. This means no listening to voicemail, no using of call centers which asks to enter numeric options, no joining telephone conferecences with a pin and no remote activation of DTMF based server settings.
It is a real pain and I hope it can be fixed. If anyone has advice, it will be appreciated.
P.S. Please don't tell me that it can be done and all I need to do during a call is to select "Options -> Send DTMF -> Enter Manually -> * -> Y", because that is stupid. Entering 5 commands to select a single digit is rediculous. It is like saying that I can sail from Johannesburg to Cape Town because all I need is to dig a canal and then build a ship from matches. This much effort is as good as not having it and is entirely impractical during a call with various options i.e. voicemail or call center options.

Uh, hate to burst your bubble, but this is REAL easy.
In a call, take phone away from face, press DIALER at the bottom right, and it's a number pad that sends DTMF tones..

I take it you are from South African too.
I got my N8 from Vodacom last month. I have no problems to send DTMF and access voicemail etc.
When in a call, simply press "dialler" next to "options", and use the keypad presented.
If you do not have the "dailler" button, perhaps you should try and update your firmware (or take it to Vodacare to have them do it for your).

Uhm, no... my 5800 Express Music did that, but not on the N8. The dialler on the N8 does not do DTMF tones.

Of course. Found only two spelling mistakes in the 8 pages of glossy uselessness, but nothing about DTMF tones.

Yes, it is Vodacom. I updated my firmware, but still have the same problem.

AHA ! Firmware update, then software upgrade (including enormous download of new OVI), then software upgrade again, then reboot several times... now dialler does DTMF. Couldn't they do this before sending it out of the factory ? Guess I can switch my voicemail back on now.

The detailed manual (approx 130 pages of it) is available off Nokia's web site for download is regularly updated. The short user guide I got with my N8 leads one to the support on the Nokia site.

Eh, hate to say it, but I couldn't find it in that manual. What page? I did a search for "dialer" and came up with nothing..
No one has said that the manual explains DTMF but rather have just responded to the OP's complaint that he only had "8 pages of glossy uselessness" by pointing him to the location of the detailed manual.
I don't think the manual even tells one how to dial a call on the key pad but I think the rest of us have found our key pads work like any other when it comes to dialling and keying tones - you do know what the key pad is and how to use it don't you
?

Was worried in case you may have forgotten how to use it between post 2 and post 11 ![]()
. For myself I sometimes forget things that quickly.
Besides, I would love having the opportunity to teach someone how to dial a number on a telephone but am frustrated because I have never found anyone who needs teaching

Sorry, Evildragon, but the question we're asking is: "what happens when the keyboard does NOT send the DTMF tones?" because this is the problem I have too. I am left with a keypad which is mute rendering mys voicemail messages unobtainable.
