Nokia does not provide a way for the end user to add languages onto a phone. Phones are shipped with a set of languages relevant to the country or region of sale. It is sometimes possible to have a language pack added by a Nokia service point, but that depends a lot on local rules regulations within Nokia's local operations. Also, languages added by the service point may be lost if the phone needs to be hard-reset or updated.

Really... I am amazed. Why has this changed all of a sudden, all of our previous Nokias used to have a whole slate of languages installed by default. Which has always been very welcome and in this day and age a must.
The world gets smaller, we all have friends and relatives speaking different languages. Having a broader choice of languages should be the standard. We communicate with our friends and relatives commonly in French, English and Dutch. The N8 we bought here is supplied with French, German, English, Spanish and Portugese languages. Not more. With the Nokia multi-key portrait keyboard one NEEDS language recognition support in all languages one uses.
This is going to be my last Nokia if this doesn't change, we already discovered inconsistent quirks with the N8, which only confirm the opinions read in the reviews - Nokia is dropping seriously behind in their software features.
What to think about the defaut behaviour that mobile phone numbers stored in contacts show up as video call numbers if you try to call someone - which it then flatly refuses because video calls are not available. Say what??
Now this, to get additional languages we have to PAY a service centre, and PAY again if the software update process reinstalls the default languages? What consumer service is that? By current standards it is absolutely intolerable.
I'll stick to my Android, which has all the languages availabe I will ever need, and if the N8 software doesn't get any better in the coming period, my wife will get herself one, too. It is a pity, because the camera on the N8 is great.
Nokia used to be the only phone I would consider - the rest was **bleep**. Now that table has turned. Too bad...
A disappointed long-time Nokia (ex-) fan.

Nokia has always been supportive of hacking your own phone. "It's not the technology, It's what you do with it."
As well as that Nokia phones do not sell well at all in Japan, so Japanese support would be only limited to a small number of phones by default as there isn't really a market for them. If the device exists in the region, you could easily flash that region's firmware files onto your own phone and have that region's set of languages and features.
Many Android and iOS devices are popular in Japan, which is why it was needed to include that particular language in it's firmwares so all android and iOS devices get the same set of languages to suit that region, as well as other regions so they do not need to seperately localize the device and sell it.
Also, Including Japanese fonts means paying licensing fees to the font producer. (Although this is a **bleep** argument. Nokia can easily make their own, but consider Japanese, with hiragana, katakana and 100,000+ kanji.)
I shall now rest my case.

Fgghjjkll, I'm sorry to say this, but Nokia has it all wrong if what you say is true. First of all, if you want to be popular in a certain region, you have to make things work for that region and not expect to become popular first and only then provide appropriate input methods. Makes no sense. Also, iPhones sold all over the world have basically the same (read: all) currently available input methods preinstalled. Why don't Nokia phones have this too? I've been a long time fan of Nokia phones (had 3660, N73, E71) and I've just recently switched to iPhone. Having Japanese, English, Korean, Arabic and my local alphabet work at the same time is wonderful. And I didn't have to pay for the different input methods. I just switched them on and they work perfectly (for example, you can have various scripts in the same text file without any problems). Fantastic.
You can tell I've had it enough with this practice on Nokia's part. I really don't want to "hack" my phone just to be able to input a different language. Nokia doesn't get it and that's why they're losing customers. I'm the first to say that it's really a shame.
If this issue was plaguing some older model, I wouldn't complain. But we're talking about N8, which should kick **bleep** on all fronts...

I wholeheartedly agree. This will be my last Nokia phone if this not fixed, since I'm unable to browse any Chinese or Japanese pages, or get any kind of study material on those languages into my phone. Come on, It's 2011, how hard can it be? World is getting smaller and people actually study Asian languages and make trade with the corporations on those countries.

I have the same problem with my N8 ![]()
but I'm looking for Farsi language... I want to be able to text to my friends sometimes in my first language ![]()
nokia should learn form other phones like iPhone they have almost all languages.
with internet it shouldn't be very hard to put some files online and people can be able to download as many as languages they want to have ! ![]()

Nokia is still stuck in the year 2005. It's like there's a wormhole and Nokia and their innovative ideas got sucked into it. I switched to an iPhone in 2009 and came back to the N8 late last year (thought of giving Nokia another chance) but come on. How did they let an American company cover 5 years of technology within a short time span? I mean have you ever heard the quote "American Phones are at least 2-3 years behind" ... but in 2011, I think the quote is aptly applied for Nokia.
Take the split screen text input for instance. Is it patented by Apple or something that the N8 cannot even do this simple and no-brainer method? How many clicks do you have to go to start typing? It annoys me to no end of the limitation that Nokia put themselves in.
Just switched my primary simcard back to my 3Gs. Now waiting for the iPhone 5. I'm done with this company.

I couldn't agree more. I also wanted to give Nokia a chance, mainly for the great camera on the N8 and good overall reputation of their phones when it comes to quality. Coming from iPhone 4 and Android I must admit it was a shocker. The lack of asian language support in 2011 is not acceptable. As far as software, back to 2005 is almost an understatement. Even the blackberry OS appears revolutionary in comparison. C'mon, Nokia, this is a worldphone, pentaband 3G. Great hardware is wasted/useless with an outdated software. All my previous Nokia phones (which lasted years) had a variety of languages which are now reduced to the same ones you get on a cheap 50 $ flip phone. With Nokia it's not about hardware, but their slow and dated software puts the company to shame. I'll keep on looking for those language packs for free and may keep the N8 as a backup phone and switch in the summer.
