Nokia Maps forces shutdown of N96

Hi,

I've been encountering very annoying and hazardous shutdowns on my Nokia N96 whilst using it as a sat-nav device via Nokia Maps.

The phone randomly and frequently shuts down during navigational instructions. This can happen up to three times in one journey and is very hazardous especially when I rely on the device to navigate me to my destination. I often find myself pulling up, turning the phone back on, and restarting Nokia Maps. This is very annoying especially when I have to do this several times in one journey. It only happens when using Nokia Maps.

I have software version 30.033.249.4 (18-06-2009) installed on my phone and of course, it’s a Symbian S60 device. I have no other applications running whilst using the phone as a sat-nav device. It is always plugged into the car charger so there should be no issues with the battery. The only thing I have not tried yet is a full format – which I only want to do as a final resort.

The phone was purchased brand new in Dec-2008 but I have only experienced these problems this year (maybe occasionally last year). The only additional (third-party) applications I have installed are: Barcode, BBC Live TV, Fring, Google Maps, and Stopwatch. There is 9.1MB free Phone Memory and 9.5GB free Mass Memory.

Has anyone else experienced the same problems? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Phaete

Re: Nokia Maps forces shutdown of N96

Fortunately, I don't have such problems with my N96. You didn't mention which version of Ovi Maps you have installed on your phone. It is definitely worth checking you are using the latest version and update if not. Use the link below.

Another thing you could try just in case the problem is caused by corrupt map data is to delete te CITIES folder and the qf file (if there is one), then run Ovi Maps once, then redownload all the required map data. This should refresh all your map data.

Latest version of OVI Maps for N96 is:

In my mobile, the problem is with the GPS, not the programs that use it.

Re: Nokia Maps forces shutdown of N96

I have the pretty much the exact same problem; random shutdown of ovi maps. I start it, gps fine, 3.5g fine, everythings kushti, then less than <1 minute after setting navigation; i get message; 'this feature not available in your region' its talking about traffic update feature, after the message its out of navigation mode. So i set the destination again, then <1 minute whole program closes. The exact same pattern happened 5 times in a row and I imagine will continue to happen if i tried more.

Also in settings i even set traffic updates to manual, and it still comes up with the message every single time;  'this feature not available in your region'. Please please help, since my nokia for its lack of apps, features, if anything, until now has been a reliable phone.

Re: Nokia Maps forces shutdown of N96

Your N96 uses Nokia_maps_3.01_09wk44_b01_s60_3.2_lm_rom.SIS which does not have FREE voice navigation and if you try to use "Drive" it will prompt you to purchase a "Voice Navigation" license to allow you to proceed and if you don't the application exits.

Nokia left out a number of phones which were already obsolete at the time they introduced the new version which came with free navigation, though they did drastically reduce the licence price for phones that are not capable of running v3.03.

I noticed the same problem with my old N96 with Maps 3.01 and software version v30.033, it would shut down during Maps use once or twice a day for a few weeks then behave itself for ages. I never did work out what the problem was.

Re: Nokia Maps forces shutdown of N96

They should atleast offer a free trial, just so I know its not gonna be so buggy for when I a part with my £9, also is the £9 a yearly fee??

Also about the n96 not being ABLE to run the new ovi maps, where cheap android phones can run google maps, does that mean the spec of the n96 is complete rubbish, or ovi maps has major resource use problems akin to it is the windows VISTA of maps whereas google android maps are the windows XP?

It is a yearly subscription but map data will probably be renewed several times as new data available.

The N96 always came with a free trial when bought new, 12 months in many countries, you don't get two free trials!

The comparison to Android your cheap Android phone is misleading, the N96 was developed in 2007/2008 and launched Septermber 2008. By the tilme Android was capable of running Google Maps almost exactly a year later, Symbian had moved on from the S60 3rd Edition FP2 of the N96.

In truth, S60 3rd FP2 struggled to run Maps 3.03 which is why only the popular phones still in production at the time were financially worth redevelopping to take the updated software.

Most mobile phones nowadays have an effective life of 12-18 months, high-end smartphones are obsolete in 12 months, and usually by that time hardware has moved on so far that mere software updates can't keep the phone up with the latest models.
