Nokia [Don't] Care: Cracked center button cancels warranty

[ Edited ]

My Nokia N81 was defect when I bought it.  The green button was not working, the navi scroll not working, and camera not working.

Since I bought it because I urgently needed a WLAN phone, I used it for some time even as it was mostly defect.  Only a month old, the center button cracked and half of it fell off while I was using normally.  I hadn¨t even carried it with me, as Iwas still using my 6267 to make and receive calls (Mainly because using the phone without the green btn was a hassle)

When I bought my E71 I was finally able to leave the N81 for service.   I was going to give it to a friend.

The service told me that regardless of circumstances, and regardless of the fact that it broke practically as soon as I touched it, the front plate is NEVER  covered bythe warranty.  I would have to pay for the replacement of these parts.

Now, after the pohoine been in shop for months, and for the lack of parts they are still unable to say when (if ever) it will be finished, I gotthe phone number to Nokia Care Sweden.  I spoke with very unhelpful Bjorn H######## who told me that there is no such thing as partially warranty repair.  And if the center button is cracked, Nokia cannot help me.  I am on my own.

I asked Bjorn if he is really telling me that the center button cracking in normal use means that the warranty is voided, and he confirmed that this indeed is the case.

Can this be correct!  Can Nokia completely duck their warranty responsibilities by gluing a tiny sub-standard part in the front of a handset?

Sounds unreasonable to me.

Then again there are other similar threads.  BUT, it could have to do with the fact that you are speaking to a Swedish customer care reps.

I learned one thing, when I was living in Sweden: Swedish customer care is below all standards,  I was a happy Nikon customer ever since the release of Nikon FE in 1997, and could swear that Niko's customer care is by far the best in the world.  Then 25 years later I was relocated to Sweden where I had to spend nearly 10 years.  Long story short: I switched from Nikon just so I would'nt need to deal with the sub-standard Nikon Sweden customer care.

If I were you, I'd try to contact them again.  If you are lucky you get a better customer care reps this time.  Also (A lesson learned by experience)  don't give out any personal information or IMEI# until you know you have areps that acts professionally.  They tend to team up,.If one has entered in a database that they have denied your claim, anyone else you talk to is likely to go by that decision.

I just don't feel dealing with these people again

I am not even sure I want to go through with this, the N81 may well end up in trashcan.  I don't feel I need any more of the annoyance.  I am so glad I have an E71 which seems like it may last forever.  I will hold on to it for as long as I can - hopefully I can go years without needing to buy a phone.

My observation, every handset I have bought since Nokia 2110 has always been of lesser quality than the one I had before.  The N81 being such low-point that even before the customer care experience I had already decided to forever stay away from the N-series phones.

BTW,  I am not Swedish either, and I have observed the exact thing you mention.   The companies should become aware that their customer care employees can make them seem bad no matter how good their products are.

Still nothing happening.   I don't know if the phone is ever going to be serviced.  Nokia tells me 'You are on your own' since the center button has cracked.  Have contacted Nokia through their site, they have answered that I can only contact Nokia concerning problem with the Nokia Web site. Other than that, Nokia.com offers no support.

Apparently there is NO WAY to contact Nokia other than talking to the Swediot who told me I can get NO HELP WHATSOEVER.

One really only will find how good or bad a business is once something goes wrong.  My estimate of Nokia has plummeted like its value on the stock market.  I am truly, truly sorry that I had to find out how disrespectful they are toward their customers.

Nokia, check out my signature to see the list of Nokia devices I am *currently* using.  If I wrote down every Nokia handset since Nokia 2110,  the list would be much, much longer.  I have a feeling it stops here.
