Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

[ Edited ]
NAM 5800 (RM-428) purchased direct from Nokia.
Firmware is: 20.2.014 (30-01-2009)

On my homescreen with the "homescreen" set to "Basic" (NOT "Shortcuts Bar" or "Contacts Bar"), when I click on the standard keypad or contacts button at the bottom of the screen I see the color change and I feel the screen vibration, but nothing happens. Also, when I click on the date under the carrier name I get the "Open Calendar" list with all the profiles listed below. I can select and activate any profile I choose. However, I cannot select "calendar". Please note, all of these functions work in the main menu and were working fine from both the main menu and homescreen when I first received the device. I had to do a hard reset and it may be since then that this has happened.

If I change my homescreen to "Contacts Bar" for my homescreen theme, the dialler and the contacts buttons will work, but not the Open Calendar.

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know a solution? Also, how can I officially report this to Nokia?

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

I have a similiar problem after I have connected the phone to the pc in mass storage mode...this is the second time in 3 days!!! The only solution is an hard reset with green+red+photo keys, because also the virtual keybord doesn't work!!!

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

I've been doing Mass Storage a lot since day one and I don't think this was the issue. Unless it was a matter of time befoer it was to happen.

I am hoping to avoid the hard reset. But I think may have to. So thank you for the idea.

Anyone have anmy other possible solutions before I do the reset?

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

i think if you are not already using latest firmware try upgrading to that.

if you have latest FW then try a hard reset, backup any information onto your memory disc

then:

Press and hold GREEN + RED + CAMERA when powering up. Keep the keys pressed until you get the shaking hands. That should fully reset the device, with a lock code of 12345.

This is only available on phones with 20.0.012 or later.

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

Thanks! But sadly my 5800 bricked when I turned it off overnight. I left it off for about 8 hours and it only came back to the white Nokia screen. So, I pulled the battery and left it out for an hour and then powered up and same thing. The only way to get it hack was to hard reset (green button - red button - camera button) as it powered up. It asked for my code and I put in my security code and not the standard 12345. It started up and I had hope. But then it asked me what country I was in.

A great phone is sliding into good phone territory.

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

How is this an accepted solution?
This seems like a lot of work.

I received my phone yesterday, and in less than one day I have got this problem.

If I do the reset without a backup will i lose any programs or files?

Several of us have the same problem and I think the hard reset should not be the solution because we lose all the data and therefore the apps that were purchased by our operator and for once again we must pay new.

Now my contacts and bar shortcuts no longer work. As advised on another thread I installed Handy Shell which allows you to find at least the shortcut bar.
Until Nokia fix this problem ...

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

Are you sure you cannot recover programs that were purchased? I have only purchased two, but I just reinstalled the .sis and entered in the activation code once again.

Haven't had any problems since...but who knows if I will again?

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

this prob with the home screen happens many times, its rumor that its themes that change your default icons. I would suggest, don't use other themes till nokia fixes this, or use default themes but the vanilla ones that don't have a custom icons, or use another home screen like handy shell and forget about nokias home screen.

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

Hey guys also another way to fix this problem is:

If you have Handy Shell 1.04 on your phone dial in *#7370#

This will ask for Code or Key and type '12345'

Then Phone will restart and all solved :smileyhappy:

 Epocware Handy Shell Version 1.04

Re: Nokia 5800 homescreen issues

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago - it seems to be to do with a corrupted memory card.

The solution...

* Plug your phone into your computer and back up all the data (phone (PC suite) and memory card (explorer, drag & drop)).

* unplug phone from computer & remove memory card (quick press of power button->"remove E: memory card" & remove card when prompted)

* Disable phone lock code (or make sure it's NUMBERS) - can cause problems

* turn off phone

* press and hold Red, Green and camera buttons while turning the phone on, you can release them after a couple of seconds (it's quite hard to hold them, so you may need to get someone else to press the power button)

* go through the initial setup screens (language, time, etc)

* when on home screen put memory card back in

* go to file manage, browse to memory card root and select options->memory card options->format

* restart phone (to make sure it boots properly).

* put your data back on

* use your (now working) phone

Well, that's what i did to get my phone working again, hope it works for you.
