Also you said Google Maps was free, it uses a data connection doesn't it so it's not really free is it, unless you have a free data plan with your tariff.

 Hello,

Google maps can require internet connection but the connection can be wireless too, not necessarily data connection.

But it will work without internet as well as long as you get a sattelite fix.

But the GPS issue is one of the negative points of this great device. That's because

the internal gps receiver is weak and dependable on A-gps ( assisted gps that requires data connection) to get and to keep a sattelite fix

Furthermore as an experienced gps user ( I have a standalone Gps system- the Clarion map

customized with the miopocket 3.0, running the latest versions of iGO8 and Tomtom7), i don't like the Nokia maps software at all!

Google maps is great in many aspects but it's not real suitable for car navigation ( no voice guidance, as far as I know) .

A-GPS ( assisted gps) is not an option for me, I disabled it on mine 5800 and therefore it was a struggle to get a sattelite fix.

Anyway I decided to install the Latest version of Garmin mobile XT for Symbian S60

and it was nice to see how perfectly this software works on my 5800, like a charm ( during some occasions when I it did get a sattelite fix even without a-gps)

I still prefer iGO8 than Garmin, but as a software more specific for a mobile (touchscreen) phone, Garmin did a great job!

And therefore...I decided to buy a compact bluetooth gps receiver! And why not?

The Nokia 5800 is so much cheaper than so many other smartphones out there, so

why not spend some 35 euros extra to extend our gps enjoyment and enjoy

the 5800 even more!

And another pleasant surprise was to see the perfect integration between software ( Symbian S60) and hardware ( Nokia 5800) when you have  heavy applications running

at the same time( Garmin navigation and fring) Bluetooth, Wifi, FM radio, gps on and the

battery still would take a long time to run empty!!!

Try that on a windows mobile device! Or on the iPhone. Actually you couldn't try something

like that on the iPhone: It doesnt support multy-tasking, doesnt have radio, no fully capable

bluetooth and if it had, you probably would have to charge its battery twice or 3 times a day..

Oh yes, 2 days ago another surprise: voice command works great! I can call all mine contacts and open all kind of functions withou touching the phone1 great when i'm driving;

It got pre-programmed speach labels ...just great.

I wonder how voice command works on the iPhone.

And what about the music sound? It was good,it got better with the new firmware ( I did good things with the new equalizer) but it got even better after i installed that little program- Power MP3!

Well, here in Holland the Wireless GPS Module LD-3W costs around 35 euros

http://www.converterman.nl/index.php?action=detailview&id=19&groep=4.1

It got a sirfstarIII chipset ( 20 channels) and it works great with the 5800/Garmin XT! And to my surprise it comes with a car battery charger that works on my 5800 too! And I just wanted to buy a car charger. Another 10 euros saved!

So if you dont have another GPS system and you need one, so I recommend this combination: Nokia 5800 / Garmin  mobile XT for Symbian S60 and a bluetooth gps receiver...It kicks it!

After 2 weeks using the 5800 and still learning about the Symbian os  my phone it already got quite boosted ( is it english?),imagine what it's gonna be after 1 year and with other firmwares to come??

Even as a windows mobile user I am starting to enjoy the Symbian S60 os more and more..

Today I tried out the new Samsung Omnia i8910 with a 8 MP camera running the Symbian S60 OS.

It got just like the iPhone and unlike the 5800 a kind of not resistive( capacitive? Amoled?) touch screen, all that multi-touch, multi flow, kinectic scroll stuff and more, that people keep drulling about when hey talk about the iPhone.. and just like the iPhone, the Omnia looks "hip" and even the Symbian combined with the amoled screen stuff and other things, looks cooler than the 5800's

But after 2 weeks using the 5800 I really glad that I didnt pay 2 or 3 times more for it

as i would have payed for those adevices!

And some people keep comparing these ridiculously priced devices with the 2 or 3 times cheaper Nokia 5800! It makes me a proud owner!

Some people should get a life! C'mon the Omnia i8910 is out there! Go and compare the iPhone with it! They got the same abusive price!

Cheers

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

Well said Beto_nl !

Warren, it strikes me that you should just go out and buy a laptop and a camera, because it seems to me you are wanting your mobile phone to do the impossible, you'll be complaining because its not making your tea for you next! .........  ITS A MOBILE PHONE !!!!!

I have always had Nokia phones and they have always been reliable, I don't really understand how many mega pixels and speed of internet connection and all that other rubbish (I have more important things to do in my life, like living it - maybe you should try it!)  I have a 5800 and its great, just because you think its not, doesn't mean you are right, that is just your opinion.  Don't knock them, there are people who like them, and they suit their needs, it a means of communication and some nice extras - GET A LIFE!!!

Yes, I've probably spelt things wrong and not used the right terminology - shoot me!

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

It seems to me that Warren G is right on point.

I have a 5800 and I do like a lot about it but there are some flaws that make the phone seem rushed and incomplete.  The Symbian S60 OS is a wonderful OS, but when you scotch tape touch screen to a remarkable OS and then make it all run on weak hardware, it doesn't seem like they gave it much thought.  I bought this phone for the feature you get for the price, and you pay for what you get.  My last phone was a Blackberry, yes it was stark and drab but it just worked.  With the 5800 it is somewhat stark and drab and it sometimes works.  There are too many bugs in this phone to call it great; case in point my Text Message notifications just stop working yesterday as well as the fact that I have been having a connection issue for the last two week.  The phone does freeze alot and it seems herky jerky at times.  I have used other Smartphones and they all seemed to be more polished and finished than the S60 5th ed. phones.  Even other Symbian touchscreen phones (Omnia HD) seem to be more of a forethought than the Nokia's.  Most days I plan to keep my 5800, but somedays I wonder if I made a good decision with this phone, I mean I shouldn't have to restart my phone to reconnect to the network.  So don't bash the man for stating the obvious...we all know this phone was flawed from day one.

Lol..it's a mistery...

After 3 weeks using the 5800 i have the memory card already filled up with music, videos, applications and maps ( Garmin maps) . Internet ( wifi) voip calling( fring) navigation( garmin) messaging, voice command, all tasks just run great, my 5800 never freezed  ( not even once) no function never stoped working and the resistive touch screen works fine even after I applied a screen protector.

So  how come do you guys have so many probs? Where did you buy your devices? Trunk dealer?

Or that have nothing to do with the hardware or software but with the USER?

Just forget about the 5800 ...Go and buy the new omnia...you really deserve to pay 400 euros more ..........obviously... lol

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

beto_nl,

If you thumb through all of this discussions there are literally thousands of users here with many different problems.  Just because your phone works great doesn't mean others  don't work horribly.  It's just inconsistency.  If the Onmia HD wasn't so **bleep** expensive, maybe I would buy it...but thats is no excuse for Nokia putting out phones with so many problems.  Please don't tell people that it is the user and not the phone, if there were only a few of us with issues...yes maybe it could be the users; but there are too many people on these forums that have REAL issues and a lot of them are the same issues.  Poeple come here for help, not to be told that "My phone works great, what wrong with YOU?".  I am a pretty tech savvy computer programmer that can figure out how to use a phone...and I am also savvy enough to know when something is flawed.  Congrats your phone works great...but some of our's don't.  Thanks!!!

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

Lilhaiti,

Ok sorry for the problems you have, you probably bought your 5800 a long

time ago and probably the first editions had some "baby diseases". If that's

correct, the "mistery" ends here.

Anyway, inconsistency doesn't void warranty...

But if you are really a pretty tech savvy computer programmer as you said,

you should know that the perfect smartphone just doesn't exist. You see thousands

of users complaining about problems with the 5800? Thousands? Really? That's a lot

of Forum reading....

Dont you think that there are thousands and thousands of complaints about the iPhone?

And what about the HTCs, etc., etc.? At the end of the line it's not about hardware anymore,

it's all about price . And Nokia did a great thing about it- maybe not with the first 5800 devices, but definattely with the last ones like mine..and  that got even cheaper!

By the way, you said something about real common issues... Can you name some?

because if my device doesnt have them and I can show you if you want( via youtube for instance), and if you still have warranty on your device ( I got 2 years on mine), you should use it to solve the problems you have, instead of wasting time whining about them over here.

Inconsistency? C'mon, you have rights...use them....really.

Cheers

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

I am definetly not saying that other phones are perfect...every phone out has flaws...especially the IPhone.  Yes I have done a lot of forum diving (not just this one) and yes there are lots of users with the 5800 with issues (alot of the some ones).  Most of the issues I have with the 5800 are issues that should never "hit the streets".  And it seems that Nokia is in no particular hurry to fix any of them.  Yes I have used my Warranty, the repair/dealer tested the phone and said that there is nothing wrong with the phone, so they updated the firmware to v21 and thats when the other problems arose.  I wouldn't really call all of them problems, just issues.  Nokia Support is a complete joke (at least in the States) because hard reset is their fix to everything and a lot of these simple issues could have been fixed in firmware updates.  Like I said every phone out there has its issues, but they seem to get attention and fixed.

Windows Mobile is the worst OS for touch phones.  But both Samsung and HTC recognized this and wrote an interface that made it a much better experience.  Not a perfect interface but a "Touch" interface.

IPhone has the best Interface by far but thats it...under the hood there is really nothing but they are working on it.

Google Android hit the ball right.  Yes it has its issue as well but the little annoying issues where ironed out on the workbench and when it hit the streets it was a pretty good touch experience, the other issues where quickly ironed out and they came out with a new OS that was born within the last two years and can look Symbian square in the face.

Symbian S60 is a terrific OS, one of the best for non touch phones, but making the icons bigger does not make an OS touch friendly, sorry can't convince me.  There is a hell of a lot to like about the 5800 and it has more potential than most any phone out there but is Nokia going to take notice and start fixing and polishing this OS for Touch or better yet come out with a new OS made for touch?  I bought the 5800 for the cost and the features but fumbling through a clumbsy interface is not what I had in mind yet I have gotten used to it but when my phone freezes or starts acting erratic and I read that countless other are experiencing the same thing that tells me that this is something in the code and not just my phone...maybe some have not experienced it but some of us have and it gets freaking annoying...I just got off from a long day at work bout to take a shower and get a drink and jump right off of my soap box.  I love my phone really I do!!!

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

After reading all your comments and grouches I'd like to add my own comments.

I've had Nokia most of my 'mobile phone life'. I say most because I've also had the LG Viewty (4 infact-**bleep**!) and up till last week, the Pixon-again **bleep**.

Personally I find Nokia make pretty reliable phones, indeed its my old nokia's I return to when inbetween repairs. I chose the Pixon as I was told it was really good-it's not! it's horrible. You say you've had problems with your 5800? you'll know what probs are if you had the Pixon!

Whether my 5800 is a later edition I dont know, but it came with version 21.0.25 loaded and has beeb superb in every way.  I had heard/read that the earlier editions did have a lot of glitches so these may have been fixed now or could be the set's you 'glitchers' have?-I do sympathise with those who have had problems as it's extremely infuriating, but I can honestly say mines been brilliant in every way.

Can I suggest that those with problematic 5800's to return them for repair-O2 repair 3 time then replace- perhaps a newer handset may be better? or insist a complete change of make/handset?

Can I also add to posters with a grouch against other forum members to  remember the saying 'each to their own' ? :smileyhappy:

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

Maybe there is a difference with the newer phones versus the old ones.  Mine came with the old firmware, so it was probably one of the first ones.  After talking with a Nokia rep for the last hour, it seems clear that I will not be getting a new phone anytime soon; they tell me that there is no difference in the phone besides the firmware and for me to either update the firmware using NSU or taking my phone to a Nokia dealer to load.  I have done both.  After my drink last night I have decised to live with these issues and wait on the next firmware update.  I am in the US so I will not hold my breath.  I have chosen to only focus on what I like about my phone.  There are lots...and for a phone, it takes OK pictures...I took some pics of a friends car to post on the internet and they didn't come out bad at all, never really thought of this phone as a camera alternative (not replacement).  This phone has replaced my MP3 player and aside for some quirks the browsing experience is good.  I was also able to edit code that a co worker sent to me right on the phone and it compiled with out reformating...my blackberry wouldn't do that.

A friend of mine that lives in Tokyo just bought a Pixon just for the camera.  She says that since she always forgets her camera she needed something with more than 5 Megapix.  She likes the camera but the rest of the phone she doesn't use; she only send texts and makes phone call with it.

Re: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

Fair enough, If you can live with the little gliches, so be it lilhaiti, as from what you're saying a firmware upgrade seems the only option. I might be fortunate and have a good handset compared to others :smileywink:

The UK is just as bad for firmware updates, more so if you rely on your server as they like to test them before issuing so taking even longer for availablity.

Has your friend in Tokyo tried the Pixon's video yet? the camera was one reason too why I got this phone and that was also a mistake. I didn't think that much of the photos-perhaps it was because the flash didn't go off right. I'd gone to a NIN gig-their last for quite some time- and was extremely dissapointed with the videoing, infact the sound was shocking on playback! completely distorted. I now have NIN gig videos completely spoilt because of appalling sound quality. I simply can't watch them, so wasn't too happy at all.

Plus the Pixon screens rubbish to see when texting in sun. I know most screens are, but this was the worst I'd ever had. You shouldn't have got me started on that subject lol glad your friends Pixon seems to suit thoiugh.

So you can see why I'm waxing lyrical about the 5800 lol but sorry for you with all your 5800 problems lilhaiti
