Awesome firmware update?? Maybe...I wouldn't know!!
Reason? I heard about the great things to come at Nokia (Kinetic scrollin etc aka iPhone) so I picked up a new 5800 XpressMusic a few days back. Tried to update on the web to the firmware V.40 and guess what......of course it's not there, says something like "my phone already has the latest software."
Called Nokia Hong Kong customer service and asked about the firmware and got more **bleep** off than ever. Why? The response I got from the Nokia service rep and I quote was, "yes, the firmware update is not yet available on the web server due to some issues. However, our shop in Mongkok has the service update available for a small fee of HKD100."
I thought I heard wrong and asked the guy again and he reassured me I got it right...! This is bullsxxt! I mean, having to go to a service center to get a firmware update that's supposed to be on-line is already bad enough. And now these guys want to make us consumers look EVEN MORE STUPID by paying for the firmware update when my phone is only a few days old??? What's the deal here...???
I should have just bought the iPhone and be done with it.

Other people can update their software but I cannot. What's wrong?
Update availability is based on many things, including existing Nokia device firmware version, country, and operator. It may be due to one of these variables that your Nokia device isn't eligible for updates.
Please note that your mobile service provider, operator, or carrier may not have approved the latest Nokia device firmware available.
So you keep checking until the firmware is available for your phone .

updating to new firmware depends on product code which represents your region of purchasing, language pack and if it's branded or not .... so NOKIA releases firmwares and release it for every product code depending on mentioned points
you can check for updates @ :
http://mea.nokia.com/support/download-software/dev
To find what the latest available device software is, you’ll need your device’s product code. The code is printed on the white label beneath the battery (e.g. CODE: 0520001).
if your phone is branded with an operator, that means that you should go to the operator care center and ask them, not NOKIA
some updates delay in some countries variant product code, as it requires more effort to add language pack to it like and in some certain countries "example. China Japan Korea" or it needs the country to approve it due to its policy

Just another new 5800 NAvEd user who expected to get these new features available on a new, unlocked device.
My release code is 0591814, and I cannot get beyond Rev 31. No relevant ETA info from the "Can I upgrade?"page.
I thought that this device was going to be an improvement over my iPod Touch with Skype. It really deosn't seem to be. And, while I am on a rant, why in hell couldn't they include half a gig or more of RAM for the OS? Especially when they bundle stupid space wasters like Bounce Touch, that one can't delete?? Such a shortsighted design. I expected so much better design from Nokia.

guess what...as an update to my steaming, only 2 days after I posted my last message my phone crashed....BIG time. the calender shortcut disappeared from the screen and when I tried to call out I got the message "emergency calls only". Just as I thought there was something wrong with my SIM a friend of mine called and I could answer the call without any problem. After the call I tried to call out but I got the same message again. Way to go Nokia!
Took the phone to the Nokia care center immediately of course, talked to the customer service and the guy admitted to me that there was a slight problem with the V.31 firmware on my phone and it's a KNOWN issue. Some phones will have problems while some don't so they haven't put the V.40 firmware on the net for downloading. And hour later, I had the phone back and it was completely re-programmed with the V.40 firmware.
It's been a few days since the firmware update and thus far everything seems fine. Slow when running a few apps in the background but otherwise no adnormal behaviour observed as yet...so I am having my fingers crossed.
I am now starting to like my phone again...although intensive use of Wi-Fi does prove to drain the battery faster than I'd like, and I am getting one day's use at most from a full charge.

I was able to use update over the air (as described earlier in this thread) to update my unlocked 5800 to V.40, no issues. Well, I'm finding more and more bugs in this phone but I don't know if those are new to .40 or not. Briefly:
- incoming calls aren't recognized properly. I have a call in my log from a friend whos number is in my phonebook but it's not matching it. Maybe because the phonebook entry starts with +1? No idea. The most troubling part is that a Nokia I bought 4 years ago or so had the same problem. You'd think Nokia would get that fixed by now.
- Media key seems to loose functionality after the phone has been on for a while. I haven't narrowed down the cause yet. This morning my phone would only give a haptic 'buzz' when the media key was pressed, no popup menu. No big deal but if you're going to give us a dedicated button on a touch phone, let's make sure it -always- works.
- Most troubling: it seems my 5800 ate my SIM card. Phone worked yesterday and today it can't register. Tried the SIM in a different phone and it says 'unregistered'. T-Mobile doesn't know why my SIM doesn't work anymore but they'll give me a new one tomorrow. I sure hope that doesn't happen again.
Later,
Sander

@Bouldergeek - Half a gig of RAM? Thats crazy. Not even the iPhone 3GS has half a gig of RAM. Just 256mb. And Bounce Touch doesnt affect RAM if you dont run it.

OK, you got me on semantics.
How about "I would love for this phone (the 8500) to have sufficient RAM provisioning to never bump its head on a memory ceiling when browsing simple web pages or running two or more concurrent apps?"
The iPhone has 256MB and DOESN'T MULTITASK!
If Symbian S60 can run in 256MB and not get memory full messages, great.
the 81MB the 8500 comes with is insufficient, and it was this complaint that irritates me.
I have my 8500 nav Ed. at v.40 now, and it still is less than wonderful. But, it is a nicer phone for calls than many others in its class. It's just a POS for non-phone activities.

The memory full messages is a corruption error. Even when I had like 50mb RAM and 40mb free C memory, I get those messages even when I'm trying to access a function which I was able to make work before with less RAM.

Mind that nokia didn't EVER solve the problem with the full memory but i'm still using because i love symbian(at least the phones i had 5200,n78,n79,n95,5300) .
Months ago i coudn't even start the browser o update the music library. I updated to v40 on 5800 and it wasn't solved.
I'm actually in argentina, i went to a non official nokia services man which told me not to use the original sd card which came with the phone because they brought a lot of bugs and it had some settings which were very very bad in terms of starting up an app.
I did it and all the problems even with a 1GB card i get no problems (i DIDN'T hard reset). Browser does not lag, music updates and i have only 11MB left in C. So it MIGHT be a solution.
