hi,
i am facing a peculiar problem with my 5800.i hv firmware v21.
Whenever i restart the phone with the sd card inserted (it has around 35+apps/games loaded but 4.3GB of memory is free) ;the phone hangs up at the "nokia" screen & i hv to remove the battery.on ejecting the card & then restarting; the phone starts up fine.on inserting the card later after the restart; it is read without any problems by the phone & all the apps. work fine.i do not hv any apps loaded for start up.
i saw similar problems posted in some other topics for 5800;but could not get a clear idea whether this problem was occuring in other phones as well.Is it firmware related or due to large no. of apps on the phone?
please help.

I have had the same problem here in the USA using the latest firmware - v20. I don't recall what occured right before to cause thiscrash to happen.
I have also used your solution to get the phone working again. Usually, the problem happened every few weeks.
Just a few days ago, I purcahsed a brand new 8gb microSD card from another brand. I inserted it and formatted it and then restored my phone. Since then it has been working fine, but it has only been three days.
I think this COULD be a solution.

Hi,
I have this problem two days ago and this afternoon as well. Same procedure as you.
Now, after a reboot with micro SD, I've turned off without micro SD -> Stop OK.
I put the micro SD and I turned it on -> No problem.
we'll see...

It has now been exactly one month since I purchased and installed my new microSD card as mentioned above. The phone has had zero problems that have required rebooting and reinstalling. I believe that was something I was doing at least once a week when I first purchased the phone.
In my case, it MAY have been a bad memory card that shipped with the phone. Regardless, I am willing to believe that the new cardonly helps my phones reliability.

I have the same problem, my phone is also less than 1 month old. I first noticed the problem this morning. The phone woke me up as usual, then when I checked it about an hour later it was off. When I tried to switch it on it behaved as discribed, hung onthe Nokia logo. Removing the SD card and then re-inserting it once the phone was on was the solution.
I wonder if Nokia will replace the SD card?

The easiest way to restart (without running into the problem to withdraw the SD card first) is to change the language settings - this usually requires a reboot.
This also helps to get rid of the multiple/double icon problem as reported here:

FYI, on newer packages Nokia replaced their own 8GB class 2 card with an unbranded 8GB class 4 card, but nevertheless, I found the SanDisk class 4 8GB faster & more reliable.
Might be that the new FW for the 5800 might help, but it's not available worldwide yet.
More on this SD card problem found here, too:

Is this a joke - or can you confirm this personally? Which version? v31.0.015?
Can the new firmware fix the problem - or must we format the SD card?
Thx - would be great....

Back to the original question...
Your memory card is corrupted - Simple really.
Don't panic though, there is a solution - backup your files from the memory card and format it (go to file manager, open the memory card, select options->Memory card options->format). Et voila, one working memory card.

i lost valuable memories that i recorded using my 5800 also after a while i lost programs that i bought using my 5800. any one can help here?
is it a memory problem or something wrong with the phone?

it is most likely the corrupt memory card issue, it happens quiet often. that is why back up is so essential to have especially of memories and such. for that i use share online and upload my pics right away to ovi or vox whichever.
the programs you bought you should be just able to download once again and plug in the key you have gotten with your applicatioins. you should be able to recover all of your purchases. i am sorry for your pics for those can't be recovered
i always keep a separate email folder for all my application keys so i can find they easily as phones and memory does get corrupt. i can do it relatively quickly and have the info handy even on the go

Thank you very much ivallay! Now I don't have to remove memory card everytime I switch on my phone nor to format SD card at all.
All I did was changing Automatic language to my own language. Hope it's only 21.0.025 FW problem and will be repaired on next FW.
Thank you again.

@woodyxxl
Ver 21.0.025 was released in SA, which fixed the problem on my device.

@pholloway:

So I format my card .... now everything works again and no more problems....
It was a hard way to find a way to restore 100% of the card without losing anything.....
Thx to nokia for backup software, which doesnt save 100%....
Thx to nokia for the card problem and no tool to check and fix it....
stupid finns...

Update:
Problems still exist. Looks like the memory card is NOT the reason. Must be the settings of phone.
I format about 5 times the memory card. After restoring the setting of the phone - 5800 will not restart (= hang Nokia Logo).....

Same problem here,
it is driving me crazy after a hard reset it works for 4 hours then it starts rebooting. faster and faster.
i hope there is a solution V21 here.

Update:
The memory card is not the reason.
I do a hard-reset and NO MORE restore.
....24 hour of hard work to re-setup all of the programs and data....
Problem doesn´t exist any more.
The major problem is symbian and defect/crashed settings!

first update your phone
2-backup your files and format your memory card and try it if not buy a new memoru card because the warentry does not cover memory card and even batery if you want in the future.
