New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

Found this posted on another forum.

The Nokia N80 Internet Edition comes in two stylish colors, patina bronze and pearl black, and is expected to be available from mid-September 2006.

Major features:
1) WLAN wizard
2) Mobile Search application
3) Amazon's MobiPocket Reader.
4) Posting images with Flickr (like N73 & N93)
5) Yahoo! Go for Mobile application
6) new Download! client
7) VoIP framework to make calls over WLAN

Link: http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1072566

I wonder if any of these features will appear in a future firmware release.

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

After paying 650 euros for this phone we had BETTER get a damn free upgrade to this edition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These are all the features that should have been available since the beginning...

I have had this phone now for almost 3 months and the battery is just.. ridiculous!!! After just a couple calls and a dozen SMS, by the end of the day, I have to recharge.

And thats after also disabling the UMTS!!!

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

I've just been reading about this in a press release. I'm in two minds and don't know if to be happy (if we get a firmware upgrade) or to be completely and utterly mad about it (if we don't get a firmware upgrade, and we've effectively been conned by a phone which hasn't been quite as fully featured and up to the hype that it was announced as, and only getting the features we all expected the N80 to have in this new version).

I really hope that Nokia make the firmware for this "internet edition" phone available to all N80 users. If they don't it'll be a really bad move, and a real kick in the teeth for people who went out and bought one in the past couple of months.

I was under the impression our N80's supported VoIP due to the SIP features, so it was disappointing to find that it didn't out of the box. Also I think the Flickr feature should be made available to all NSeries phones and not just the ones that have been launched after the Flickr announcement a few months ago (which, for reference, the N80 was released *after* the announcement, so it's a poor show if we don't get it).

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

i doubt this will be available as a fw upgrade, it sounds like an N80i

for those who think it bites that the n80 doesnt have all this stuff now, well, you cannot expect people to give you what you want all of the time.

we bought the n80 based on what it can do right now, not what it could do.

how many people are upset of the n93 golf edition i wonder...

I think maybe you're right about us buying it now and only being able to have all the stuff what was on it when it was released. We did after all buy it knowing full well what it was supposed to do and if you read reviews about it then you saw what it was you were buying.
But then saying that, I haven't really received all the stuff I was supposed too. I got a battery that sometimes only lasts little over 6hrs (not a joke, fair enough the signal was only half but 6hrs!!) bluetooth that disconnects cos it thinks it's funny (strange that it is mid call that it does this and not when your just idly driving), text messages that take anything up to a minute to send (some even say one and a half min)and other little glitches. So if and when a firmware upgrade that offers more services becomes available, perhaps it should be for all as a way of saying thank you for sticking by us and not jumping ship to other manufacturers. Give and take and all that.
Others feel free to add to what I have said or slate it, it's for discussing.
Is that an N95 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?!?

Life's too important to take seriously.

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

Well, before we go and chuck spears at Nokia employees, let's evaluate what you get:

- Exclusive colours - I like silver, I don't care
- WLAN wizard - I can set mine up, I don't need a wizard
- Mobile Search - included with v4 firmware
- Amazon's MobiPocket Reader, Flikr, Yahoo! Go, Download! client - all will probably be available to download from Nokia website or elsewhere in the future
- VoIP framework - sounds like a firmware update job, but personally, I wouldn't use it anyway

So, personally, I don't think I'm going to lose any sleep over it. :smileyhappy:

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

taffy/fredbob - good points.

im gonna have to stick with it tho - we dont deserve a firmware update like this just because we stuck with it. my n80 is a sim free model, so im not in a contract with it.

i can only see people get upset when they are in a 12/18 month contract and feel a little hard done by when they were not offered this one for free. shame eh? lol

i like th voip thing, i hope its included for other nseries phones in the future - but i use an e61 for business which already has this, so no ulra biggy for me.

btw, you all see how someone spiked my ratings? i used to be a professor or something. someone got upset with something i said and dropped me a rank by leaving me bad feedback. i told a mod, but i am stuck now.

sucks or what?

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

Is just marketing, nothing more. Only SW application already availlable on market. What N80 need, is a new more powerfull battery, but that is engineering, not marketing, and that, it doesn´t have.

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

Honestly, I can live without all the "extras" but if this firmware/edition has optimized the battery life, thats what I REALLY WANT

SIP connectivity is nice too..

The wizards and stuff.. blah.

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

I may be a bit thick, but what is the advantage of using VOIP over a mobile network? The data charges are going to be way more expensive than just making the phone call, no?

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

Almost everything (expcept Skype) use SIP.

Also, normally within a company (large/medium) that has an internal phone network, they use SIP.

So, essentially you could have a cordless phone as well as a normal gsm.

Re: New Nokia N80 Internet Edition

Hi, I think they should at least give the VoIP to existing N80 users.
The N80 is a good phone but not without its problems. The battery life is very poor, the camera has a delay (sometimes over a second. please don't move I'm trying to take a picture...)and there has been many other problems listed in this forum, which in my opinion are not acceptable from a phone of this price.
Also, why is the N80 not listed within the OTA and downloadable FW upgrades facility? Does anybody know if it is to be included?

Well,

At where I'm, quite a handful actually uses Skype for overseas calls. So, if I'm not at my home desk (since my company I work for has a policy of not allowing us to install P2P softwares, which includes Skype), I can hop into any free WiFi hot spots, which McDonald's one of them, and start making calls to another overseas Skype user.

Hope this helps in the understanding. Of course, it may not apply to all locale.

Cheers. ^_^;

N80 Internet Edition

See this article:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20060831/tc_pcworld/126998

This new N80 Internet Edition will include full SIP support for VoIP like the E61. Will this support be available to existing N80 owners via a FW upgrade? What version and when?

Cheers.

Re: N80 Internet Edition

looks pretty good, i think the main feature i'd want would be the VOIP, but i have stop the clock, so it's not essential. I do hope there will somehow be a VOIP program for the common N80 though

Re: N80 Internet Edition

A lot won't be possible due to hardware differences.

But no reason why FW couldn't give a few improvements which would get us closer to the i version.

From what I have read, the N80 internet edition has identical hardware to the outgoing N80, there is no difference other than the loaded firmware/software.

That'd be a first, as all previous 'i' versions have have newer/improved hardware. Can't see the N80i being any different.
