I have been a proud, yes proud N97 owner since 09.09.09 and I am delighted.
There seems to be a somewhat disproportionate basis against these phones within this forum.
There are some foibles that exist - this is one pretty powerful piece of kit, and it is no wonder that there are glitches.
I am sure that given any product, it is all too esay to shoot holes in it.
Perhaps some of the critics would come up with a superior solution? Silence.
Exactly
I am sure that V2 will address so many of the issues that the early adopters FEEL the they are having?
Might not change the mind set that seems to prevail.

???????????? you lost me there. My understanding is that power equates to smoother operations unless something is seriously wrong. The fact that a lot people are on the 3rd 4th 5th and even 6th handset says it all.

Power applies to a phone that can do more than my first two PCs that were bought 10 years or more ago.
I have maybe got a good one, it does'nt crash, cut me off or give me endless problems. Maybe I am too easily pleased. Everything does what it says on the fin. Maybe my expertatios are too simple or maybe, i think. more realistic.

Nokia quite willingly exchanges these phones for new ones doesn't that tell you something? When the phone was announced and advertised norwhere did they say you may have to wait for firmware V 2.0 to get the phone working as we planned. They passed it of as solid piece of kit that was the next big thing where phones are concerned.
You r lucky not to have experienced any problems , but personally I am not impressed with what I've had to go through with the phone. Don't get me wrong I like the whole N97 concept but the whole experience is not what I expected. Had to return the first handset after 3 weeks coz it started oxidizing around the USB connect, my current handset is away for repairs one more week makes it a month how can I have any good words about it??

Or maybe you aren't really trying to use the phone for anything?
I don't think it is an unrealistic expectation that the phone don't crash, don't lock up, don't need reboots (ever) and don't have various bugs that are over-obvious.
So, you don't have any problems? You never used the photo browser then? Or do you mean that you never had it loose track of a photo? I can tell you in five seconds how to mess that one up. Take a photo. Look at it in the photo browser. Delete the image in the file browser. And then just enjoy the broken image icon in the photo browser that you cannot get rid of (unless you accidentally get into this state without doing anything, since it seems to do this even spontaneously for most people).
Or how about try setting other ring tones for people, or groups of people, and count how many times you'll hear the Nokia tune instead. It is kindof random.
Here is another one: set your messages to be stored on E:. Connect the phone to your computer is mass storage mode, and then observe how your settings were changed back to C: again, without telling you. That will cause you to have messages stored in two different places, and you cannot view them all at once. Instead you will forever have to switch back and forth between the two storages to see your messages...
I can go on...

Let's swap phones for 2 weeks and see wheather you will return your stance on this "lol". You don't have problems with yours so there's no need to come up on here and try and make the people facing multiple problems and complaining about it seem silly. Proclaiming that V2.0 will solve all the issues is a bit naive. How does firmware update fix a scratched camera lens?

This is typical of this forum at the moment. A person makes a positive comment just to be shot down by the serial moaners and trolls.
Can't you just let the guy/gal enjoy their phone?
Just because you had problems it does not mean that everyone is having trouble!

I half to agree, my first one had a problem after 10 days. The second one if working fine after 2 more weeks.

Had he made a positive comment without referring to us mouners and trolls we would never have responded to it.

Perhaps that person is just sick of seeing all the the irrelevant moans and trolls posts that keep appearing on genuine support questions? These moaners/trolls are often preventing those people from getting the support they need.
All these moaners and trolls are succeeding in doing is annoying people that have already bought the phone and want help with it. If thats their aim then these people really are pathetic.
If a piece of technology annoys someone that much then they should just sell it, cut their losses and move on. I personally never keep hold of an electronic device that I hate, even if it means losing a bit of cash.

Complaining about the complainers is an attempt to suppress free and open discussion.
The next thing you know is the Nokia Discussions software will include filters to delete all negative language and replace it with NewSpeak. Example: "The N97 GPS functionality is double-plus-ungood."
So I would like to be the first to complain about the people complaining about the other people complaining. ![]()
What would really be of help to the N97 user base is at least some statement from Nokia--acknowledgement of a problem (or in the case of the N97 problems ! ) and a promise to do something about it in a reasonable time frame.
Instead we just have that cricket-chirping sound.
It is acknowledged that Nokia like many other companys is having some financial difficulties at present and rushing a not-quite-ready product to market in an effort to generate some cash flow is a way to stay solvent.
I purchased my N97 knowing full-well that as an advanced "converged" device there may be some compromises and some initial difficulties. But then I don't want them to fail in the marketplace--I've been a dedicated Nokia user for a number of years.
So...let's all work toward solving the problems, helping other users and tolerate the occasional rant (keep it civil).

I have no problems with people that are constructive in their criticism and those that use it when it is relevant.
It's the idiots that take every opportunity to disrupt threads with unhelpful, unconstructive rants, moans and trolling that I really detest. Those people are the ones that make the rest of us not care about helping other people.
For example earlier today someone answered a genuine support request with something like "N97 is buggiest phone ever..... should have used google before buying blah blah etc". Someone else posted something else equally as irrelevant. How are posts like these helpful to someone that's already bought the phone?

Psychomania's point is perfectly valid. When you go anywhere looking for help with a problem with a product, be it a web forum or any other form of support, do you want actual help to solve your problem or do you just want a tirade about how stupid you were to buy the thing in the first place?
Not really how to win friends and influence people, this trolling lark, it's just about "Listen to me because I think I know it all"...

The "use Google" response seems to be commonplace everywhere. I've asked Questions before elsewhere and been shot down because "I was too stupid to know the solution and should have tried Google"
"Thanks. Funnily enough I used google and it brought me here"

I too am quite proud of my less than perfect N97. It's technically quite complicated to set up fully, but that's ok by me, I like a techy challenge. Also, the company from whom I bought the phone, on a contract, alerted me to the "techiness" of the Nokia N Series. As I already had an N95, I explained to her that I was ok with the complicatedness of the phone. As an engineer, rather than an architect, for example, I go for the "Function before Form" choice - as opposed to, e.g. the whole Apple philosophy, which is the opposite. I thought it was very professional of the company to ask if I was sure it was the right phone for me, rather than just selling boxes.
The one part of the OP's posting, which I might comment on is "... There seems to be a somewhat disproportionate basis against these phones within this forum.".
This is a naive comment.
Of course there is a majority of people with negative feelings towards these phones. It IS a Support Forum after all. If people (other than forum addicts, that is) didn't have problems with the phone(s) they wouldn't be here at all.
If someone can point me in the direction of the warm, fuzzy, no problems forum, I'll happily give it a visit, and join in the warm glow.

Its a learning curve that every (irritated) member goes through. This forums are supposed to be free & open. Let the new members go through the learning curve. We can always be nice to new members. This gives them the room to exhale their frustration. for missing features / bugs on device or just a simple problem that they don't know how to fix.
Imagine - if customers could not express themselves at the forums and these very same customers going to a nokia store / care center and piling on the front desk sales person who has his limited knowledge to address the issue. It could lead to chaos ! Cause more damage then help.
Lets face it. If my device was in great shape, I would be listening to music, sharing some pics, browsing, catching up with friends, checking & clearing some mails, sending some messages and getting more from my device. What the hell would I be doing on the forum so very often ?
I would only be here for 3 reasons
1. I need help on my device that's not working the way its supposed to be
2. I have nothing better to do
3. I get paid for it.
I am here for reason number 1. And I am looking for solutions.
I don't think you are obliged to read every single post here, make your observation & give a judgment - unless you qualify for reason 2 or 3. How does it affect you ? If something is irrelevant to you just move on in life buddy. If there is a roadblock I would rather find a way around rather than bang my head on it.

Some people do come on here to Offer Help and Advice. Not just to ask for it
