Had this problem twice since I did the firmware upgrade.
My N97 will not receive any text messages until I send a text message out, then it will receive 2 or 3, will not receive anymore until I send another text message. I also noticed it will receive texts when I shut it off and turn it back on, or when I go into the SIM messages folder, while the folder is opening I will receive text. Any other time it will not receive any texts. So basically I have to keep sending myself blank text messages or checking my SIM messages throughout the day just to check if I have any new messages incoming.
I have done a soft reset, and a hard resent, and reinstalled the firmware twice. The first time I reinstalled the firmware it fixed the problem for about a week, then it started doing it again. However, reinstalling the firmware will no longer fix this problem.
I have called T Mobile and walked through all their steps and had them do a conection reset to no avail. I have also contacted nokia by phone and they didnt even take any steps to fix it they just want me to mail it in for service, but I cannot go without a phone for a week so I'm asking on here to see if anyone has any help.
I am also experiencing a problem with my call logs not logging any information. I receive missed call notification but when I click show, it goes to the Log and the log is empty. It also does not keep track of any of my dialed numbers or received calls. I have already checked the settings and both are set for 30 days, I even tried them at 10 days, but nothing works.

It might be a SIM card issue. There are a few versions of SIM cards; some with low memory and some with high memory. Try moving your contacts tot he phone memory and empty the contacts on your SIM. Texzt messages can be saved on SIM and on Phone, and this consumes memory.
Sometimes SIM cards do get "fried" where parts of memory locations are demaged.

also where do you store your messages? on c memory or e memory ? if it is on c then it might be that it allows a certain number of messages and nothing more.
if you have not already done so go to :
messaging- options - settings- other - here is where you would select your memory. i have it set to 500 on e memory have not had a single issue with text or mms messages or email for that matter.

make sure that your message center number is correct and if that is fine your only option is to use code #2 just make sure you do a back up of your stuff.
1. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for all operations listed here is 12345
2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone
3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
hard reset - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. )
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

this is defo not a sim card error
not a network error
Im experiencing the exact same problem as the user that logged the issue. from exploring these forums it seems to me that nokia is very notorious for this issue with N series phones.
I was on the phone for an hour recently with my provider and we went through EVERY possible scenario and i even put my sim card in three other phones and it received texts then, but when i put it in the n97 it was not receiving anything until i sent a text. most people have said doing code 2 usually works but then it goes bonkers again.....best thing i have now is to take my phone to car phone warehouse...but i cant do 4 days without a phone! that is just ludacris! why does nokia have to test their phones on the market? this does not make an relative sense besides trying to be cheap!

Mine is doing exactly the same!! Typical as i have only had the phone for 3 weeks - surely if it is faulty the phone should be replaced via warranty / insurance??
I wasted 4 hours of my life on different calls to orange trying to resolve this

I too have had a similar problem over the weekend.
receiving calls/texts. on sat 8th August, my freind sent 2 texts, he also called me. On Sunday 9th August at around 11am i receive a 'missed call' notification when i select the call register, it doesnt open. I then turned the phone off and on and received 5 text messages, all from the previous day, the call register opened showing no missed/received/ dialled numbers - all was completly blank, like it had all been wiped clear.
at no point during saturday did i turn the phone off. I only turned it off on Sunday when i couldnt get the call register up despite having a 'missed call' notifcation'
oh and today, after exiting a stopwatch app (third party, as nokia feel you dont need a stopwatch on a £500 phone) whilst playing mp3s, the phone reseted, so i go to play another song after it reboots - woops, still crashes, so i turn off and on again.
oh dear! nokia, you left 'paper weight' of the features list at the back of the phone!

If that's unsuccessful it'd be off to Nokia Care point for me, if there's one near you it's normally quicker than going through provider, eg. CPW don't have a good reputation for repairs where I am. Phones can be returned if within timescale of provider's return policy, or can be repaired under provider's warranty (length of contract), or Nokia's 24 month manufacturer warranty.

I had the same exact problem on my phone. I also tried everything hear and still nothing until I performed a Hard reset - *#7370# and this actually resolved my problem. I don't know how long this will work though. I then did a restore but the problem came right back. The trick is to not restore all data - just restore the contacts. Everything else you should restore manually using the suite.
I looked further into this and noticed that the LOG - (Applications - Log - packed data) was corrupt. Everytime I tried to clear the actual data in there (it had some text messages and call logs) the phone just hung. I think that's the root cause but in either case, doing a hard reset takes care of this as long as you don't restore user files.
