try this
1. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345
2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)
3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
hard reset - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen.
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.
dont forget to say thanks

and you my sir need to learn to credit other people's posts. it is my post that you just posted to another user as a suggestion. next time perhaps you will give credit where credit is due. so if you follow this advice do not thank the user that posted this particular solution he/she did not come up with it. i do give you credit tho for finding something that might help just do it in your own writing next time.

i agree with what said, i am greatly dissapointed with my n97, and if had a choice would'nt even buy it after knowing and trying all its faults. wat also annoys me is the facts that it is impossible to change the label in the contacts, it is just soo annoying.
nokia should do some series compensation to us, or atleast one heck of a big software update fixing all problems

thanks for ur help in navigating me to the link on the top of the page, if only i had one question i would have posted it. and by the way there seem to be no answer to some of the issue relating the n97. and let me point out what is the title of this post "n97 vs. n900", and not "ask specific question"

Just joined this fourm, and having swifly read the first page, I have to say my own feeling mirror the majority of posters. I was just saying last night to my falt mate, how cheated I felt as the act of support for the N97, and now that seems to be pushed out of the window, as Nokia preapres for the N900.
Seriously thinking of cutting my losses with the N97, flogging it and going back to my trusty old N95, and waiting for the N900 to come out, but due to the experience with the N97, I don't feel I should show any kind of brand loyalty, certainly, they don't seem to care about N97 users .
I understand this is a user forum, but my overall experience as a user of the N97 is total , utter spectacular feeling of being underwhelmed.

Hi, I just wanted to say I have just written to Nokia and also Vodafone about this disgusting bit of news.
Who the hell do Nokia think they are treating their loyal fan base like this. It is as if they just think we will follow them everywhere, just because they are called Nokia. Think again! I am one person who certainly will not be.
I am not going to be taken for a mug and then pay for the privalidge of doing it!
If Nokia go ahead with this new so called flagship phone, and leave everyone who has bought the Rubbish N97 with its Rubbish Symbian system in the dark then they can think again! I for one will go to watchdog over it.
I know for a FACT that Nokia must of spent at LEAST a year or over thniking of this N900 and using the Maemo based system on it, so why did they bring out the N97 knownig this piece of information?
Easy, because STILL in this say and age of the recession going on, they still have their heads so far up their A**es that they think they can still rip people off and get away with it, but people never forget so they better deal with this situation very carefully and think twice before making decisions that will make their supporters leave!!
Lets see how they play this!!

I read all post and respect all views. I think the N97 is a great device, however, it lacks few important things, such as Cntrl key on the keyboard, Increase of C: memory, improve battery performance to last longer specially when running push emailing or running widges, etc.
All of the above can be solved with firware update if Nokia is serious about the "voice of its customers" that is we the N97 owners who are loyal and trusted Nokia and bought the device.
A more preferred approach would be getting a major download which enable N97 to sync data with their Ovi space, then replace the OS from Symbian to Linux (because this where the future is), load all factory application with all enhancements, then of course sync back data from Ovi.
Nokia, are you there to listen?! You should this Nokia domain site and we know you are there! So transform our voice into actions.
We are waiting!

people need to chill out a bit as radical has said the n900 is a differetn kettle of fish
its a tablet 1st with a phone application built in
no mms and no duel phone and 3g connection -- puts me off a bit straight away
most of the stuff is run in landscape mode not portrait and there are many other things to consider as well
the n97 is a good device , you may have a faulty one if you have bad gps or scratched camera just send it back
mines branded on v11 and runs really well with 48gb of files on it , its a bit slow here and there but that will be improoved
v20 or v2 whatever its called looks really promising and iam sure the n97 will be a great phone and the n900 be a great tablet/phone
it isnt meant to replace the n97 just as the mini isnt meant to replace the n97 they are alternatives to the n97
the n97 has alot to offer , wait till october and you will see it starting to show its true colours
what exactly is so bad about it?? if you have a working gps and a lens protector over the camera i cant see what other faults it could have apart from still having early firmware which nokia are working on
the ps3 has needed many updates to bring it up to scratch as the xbox 360 has and vista as well infact so many items wih software have needed upgrades to sort them out even the mighty iphone needed v3 to bring it up to scratch
if you have a faulty handset then send it back there are many decent n97s out there
i wont be jumping ship just like that the n97 will still be nokias symbian flagship and symbian foundation is coming real soon , sony satio is shipping with it in october
symbian is evolving fast and to be honest its more suited to my needs as its more telephone based
its up to the user what they want but i think alot of people are misunderstanding the n900 its a tablt with a phone app built in

I reckon the N900 will wipe the floor with the N97. I think Maemo will kick S60's *** no matter how good it is. I've heard alot of N97 problems and I'm glad I didn't get it. The only thing I could ask for is a bigger screen. Like the previous N810 with a 4.13" screen and the N800 with a 4.2"
And at buxz777, I don't know what your talking about. Look up the specs on Gsm Arena
General 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100 / 900
Messaging SMS (threaded view), MMS, Email, Push Email, IM
08-Sep-2009 12:29 PM
at hittinggary------- just because gsm arena say it has dosent mean its gospel
/discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&th
http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/specifications/
where is the mms listed there on the official page mate , i cant see it can you
gsm arena get alot wrong
also did i say the n900 has no 3g support , no i didnt , what i said and what recall said was that the n900 will not be able to use 3g while using the telephone features , yes it has 3g but video calling and such are out of the window as it cant use 3g and telephone at the same time
iam sure the n900 will be great for people looking for tablet device 1st and telephone second mate but the n97 is way underated and will be a better telephone then the n900 as it was designed for that as a secondary feature
so hittinggray before you shout me down please read my post properley and understnad what iam saying so you dont post a post about something i never said
id also try to use better sources then gsm arena

recall said it great
'' keep in mind that n900 is first of all a tablet and then a phone. it is not capable of making calls and internet over 3g at the same time. so this is for sure not a phone for everyone. it does not support mms (multimedia) functionality and it will be hard for users that have really good 3g coverage to compromise on the lack of dual nature of making calls and internet connection like they can do right now. it is a tablet first and a phone second. maemo 6 is coming out next year wait and see what happens. i would not jump the gun on n97 just yet, as it is a much more capable phone solution at present time.''

Don't get me wrong. I waited with a **bleep** phone for over a year ( and when i say **bleep**, it was green screen! ) just so i could wait for Nokia to bring something out and this was it. So as you can imagine, would be very annoyed if they did just forget about it.
Now my first N97 was rubbish and had to go back ( kept turning hanging itself off, was a nightmare, especially when you are waiting for the alarm to go off! )
I then got another and it has been good. Working in the software industry, I admit not with direct contact with phones, but in general day to day life, I can see that the Symbian software is going to be a major factor, and I think unless it gets better, than Iphone will still wipe the floor with next gen phones like these, and feel that if Nokia knew they were bulding another phone like the N900 with Linux based os, then they could of gone down the road with this to.
Maybe time did not permit and maybe it was to risky for their first stab in the market of touch phones ( apart from the musicExpress, but that looks pants! ) but my main concern is this, unlike Xbox, or Windows OS, or PS3 etc, new mobile phones are on the market far more than the new XBox etc, so with that in mind I am dubious that Nokia wont just release the N900, and then concentrate on that and forget about the N97, aparf from just to iron out bugs, and even then they may stop that after a little while.
The best situation would be to keep working on the N97 with a view to seeing if an upgrade to the Linux os is possible ( this may already be looked at, we do not know. )
So for me I like the N97 and want it to succeed which is why I will be very p***ed off if Nokia do forget about it.
Yes it has a few annoying quirks like resetting the screen so it blanks out for a short while every time it moves from portrait to Landscape but every phone has its niggles, it is if those niggles are forgotten about by the company making the phones within a very short life span then that I do not like and that willl influence my Loyalty to Nokia.
As for the MMS option, I understand what you say about tablet first, but is that really what Nokia think? It is another rival to the IPhone, so to me they are selling it mainly as a phone but one that does everything apart from make your tea! I would be very doubtful if they just drop MMS picture messaging altogether unless they A) have another way of doing this apart from MMS built, or the trend is that all phones stop this facility due to less demand.
Wit regards to the 3g thing, I may of got this wrong as not read up to much about it yet, but from what I understand they have a new thing out that can download at 10mb and upload at 2mb?
Not sure we have the structure in place in Britain yet, but like i said I may have this wrong so do not quote me on that!
Oh and Ovi store is rubbish at the moment, lets hope this improves to match the iphones!!
All of this is purely speculation anyway, we shall have to wait and see what Nokia do.
Sorry I digress ......

OK I have had this reply from Nokia, which sounds pretty positive for the N97 to me.
Not really being to up on tablets and not having much to do with them, I can now see what Previous comments on this forum are saying about the N900 being a tablet first and formost and this backs them up about the N900 being different to the N97, so I think I can put this to bed now!
At least it has saved a bit of bordom when working nights writing on this forum!! :-)
From Nokia:-
" Thank you for contacting Nokia Care.
The operating system for Nokia N900 is Maemo 5 while Nokia N97 Symbian 9.4. Since
Nokia N97 was designed with Symbian platform in mind, Maemo opersting system is not
compatible.
Please be advised that Nokia N900 is not a successor or replacement for Nokia N97.
Nokia N900 is actually an internet tablet and the first (from Nokia) that supports a
SIM card; as compared to its predecessors i.e. N810, N800, etc..The operating
systems for Nokia's internet tablets have not been Symbian based. In addition, there
are also features found on Nokia N97 that are not available on Nokia N90; one of
them is MMS. Hence, this differentiates Nokia N900 from Nokia N97.
I hope this helps clarify your enquiry.
Should you require further assistance, please feel free to email me again.
Have a nice day! "

Nokia N900 is better in all aspects hardware r sotware wise. Double processor speed, Double RAM. Linux bases OS. the only question i like to ask all of you. Is it possible we do c2c chatting using Nokia N900 like we do on our PC as homes, after all its multimedia computer waht Nokia promtes with Linux based OS.

"Offering a turn-in/replacement credit/upgrade to the new N900 would be another."
I have to agree. I have never bought as expensive smart phone as N97 and i really thought that this could be it, finally WORKING smart phone from Nokia. A flagship device, they said. Few months after N97 hit the streets there were some rumours about Maemo-phone from Nokia. I have waited for such kind of device from Nokia since I have seen Maemo and what it's capable of.
I think Nokia used me and all the N97 users as a cheap betatesters. N97 wasnt ready and I dont think it never will be. It's a faulty device if you look at the main facts. N900 seems to be perfect, it's fast and has Maemo which is Linux based. I have always thought that Symbian is **bleep** and that it is. Nokia is unavailable to fix Symbian issues because it is what it is.
I would bought a N900 if Nokia will take my N97 as replacement. But I think when you suggest something like this to Nokia, they will say "Sorry guys, technics do develop. No replacementsystems :]" - It's bad for business to offer such kind of deals, even if the N97 is bs.
