N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

You may have seen my comments regarding the N97, N97 MINI and N900 on the forum and I am 100% sure that I don’t like the N900, but I am confused what to chose between the N97 and N97 MINI, I like the 32GB, bigger screen and better battery in the N97 but I like the 512MB C drive of the N97 MINI and don’t like the steel back cover. I am due an upgrade now and could get both… ?!

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

you saw my post in your previous thread?

if you don't want FM transmitter, you can buy the MINI and buy 16 GB memory, i think it's enough

even 8 GB is enough

I recommend  you MINI as I read from your previous experience, MINI fits you the most

N97 fits me :smileyhappy:

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

Hi zoro06, thanks for your comment, I just wanted to explain what I use the phone for so that anyone would get a better idea of what kind of user I am and would help them to make suggestions.

I am an Entrepreneur/IT Technician, I use the phone for e-mails, web, I use the WI-FI, while at home or out, on my N95/96 I use to have installed 3 versions of Opera as they don’t all allow you to load some pages, I also had Skyfire (browser) and other applications such as the IPlayer, the Sky Remote (for remote recording and TV Guide) I use the OVI MAP as I travel a lot, and enjoy many of the other features around the MAP such as the navigation GPS, voice guide of the navigator section, I also download all the UK maps on the memory card so that the map works quicker and don’t have to wait for download, I also use the windows messenger and SKYPE as my business 0800 & 0300 redirect to my SKYPE number, as I travel a lot I use the MP3 Player/Radio/Online Radio/YouTube App, DIVX player app, N-Gage games to pass time while waiting for public transports or travelling on them, I use the OVI store to check for new applications and like to try them, I have also some blacklist software to ban unwanted calls, the 5MP camera to take pictures of my kids and some work pictures as legal proof, I like the use of 3G (3.5G at the moment) I even had a torrent app before, I also use the mass storage option to use the memory as a flash drive, use the phone as a modem when I bring my laptop with me, I use the Bluetooth and USB cable to manage phone usage such as SMS from the PC/Laptop, my phone make use of a static IP on my WI-FI with WPA2/MAC Address filter setup on my router along with hidden SSID and am sure I could go on, but by now I am sure you have an idea of the type of user I am, and my knowledge of Nokia phone?! Well in 10 years I have never taken a phone back to the store for repairs or advice

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

The best model for you is N97 mini with 16 GB memory card if you can get it.

if you can't get this memory, you have to buy N97 original one

both suites you :smileyhappy:

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

Get the N97, sove all your stuff on it, but add RamBlow and you'll be fine :smileyvery-happy:

I've got nearly everything on my phone that you have, plus a bit more, if you're into IT and used to Nokia product , you'll have a blast, and loads of space for storage, and a better media experience with the larger screen.

Good Luck

[ Edited ]

better question would be, you've read the specs on both devices, what would the N97 mini be incapable of  doing that the N97 could do?

is there anything?

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

They do the exact same thing only difs are:

N97 has more mass memory

N97 has a FM transmitter

N97 has a bigger screen

N97 has a d-pad

Mini has more C: memory

That's really all it is

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

We established that, but what i meant was.... is there anything specific to london that HE personally could not do on the mini that he COULD do on the N97, if the answer's no then the N97 is a waste of money for all the problems and faults it has.

Anything the N97 can do the Mini can do and vice-versa, get the Mini if you don't need a HUGE amount of storage, it has alot less bugs :smileyhappy:

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

The only thing that the mini cant do is scratch its lens with a cover (there is none) and transmit FM signals. Oh, and store a 17gb file (as if, LOL). The max card it can get is 16gb, add that to 8gb internal storage, the you have about 24gb total storage, which is about half of the total 48gb total storage for the n97 big (32gb + 16gb is 48gb.)

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

What's the big deal about memory anyway?.... people go on like it's the be all and end all of the phone, who uses even all of their 8 gig anyway?.... unless you're a movie freak and store 900 meg divx files, you're not really going to fill 8 gig, even 4 gig of music is something like 5 or 6 days of constant playing time and out of them i'm sure most people pick 40 - 50 of them for a playlist.

So is the extra memory actually a waste? i've got 2 gig of 8 gig from my memory card,  i'm hard pushed to find more to put on that i want, i have Monkey Island 3 on there 1gig, more music than i'll ever play in a year, i have every tool i want and use, to me 8 gig is more than plenty...

What do you do with 16 or 32 gig?

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

Actually I have an 8gb card, havent filled all of it yet. However, whats good about the big memory is that when you use folderplay to play music, you can use FLAC formats for your music, and lossless data like FLAC (which are something like 15-20mb per file) is like WAAAAAAYYYY better in audio quality compared to mp3. Although I myself dont use it...too big a file.

I also keep ebooks and documents, and pdf files in my phone, and a movie or three for watching every now and then. I use about 5-6gigs.

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

I've got about 7gig left on my E memory and store themes, apps, and photos on a memory card, I couls manage with a mini, but prefer the N97 Classic, I have a few friends with mini, and have 'set them up' but prefer my phone, mainly for the screen ! It may not seem like a huge difference, but when comparing the two together it is noticable, specially when using the virtual T9 keypad, but each to there own, and I know the mini is less problematic, but I wouldn't swop :smileyhappy:

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

Sorry I'm not sure what one you have an N97 or N97mini? can they both play FLAC files?

Whats the difference in screen clarity in sunlight?? compared to a Nokia N95-1

How fast does the camera start up? anyone had a race yet? both the same?

How fast can the camera take a shot betwen N97 and N97 Mini?

Even now which has the most problems?, N97 or N97mini? easy to solve?

Looking at buying a second hand N97 or N97mini. also looking a the N86 as I am still using my old N95-1(8GB SD just filled up in 3years use) Screen needs to be good in sunlight and Camera needs to boot up faster than the old N95-1!  thanks.

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

I am also not sure what to buy..... and i have one question:

For what is the D-Pad used in the N97 ?

Do i really need it at all.... given that i maybe can do all navigations with the touchscreen?

So the question is:

Is there anybody with a N97 mini, who is missing the D-Pad?

Is there anybody with a N97 who never uses the D-Pad?

I would be glad to get feedback on that one...

Re: N97 v N97 MINI - Not Sure?!

I have a n97 and use the d pad all the time.
The d-pad is made for moving around in the menues with a "enter"/"OK" button in the middle. You can use it in games, apps, menu, browsing.

But it is necessary? - I believe I use it because I have the option to. - If I didn't have it, I might as well never wanted one. - I also use my right thumb on the screen all the time when having the keyboard slided out. - If i didn't have the d-pad. I guess I would have used my left too, without even thinking about it.

You'll be fine with whatever you choose.

The "thing" with the n97 is bigger screen and more storage.
